Puh i find that kind of disappointing. My three very old Sigma 40 HSMs are at F1.4 like this one at F2.8 (or even better!) when it comes to abberations (CA & corner performance) although i have to admit that those are cherry picked out of 5 total. But thank you for the review, i appreciate your astro lens reviews very much!
I’m still hunting for one of those Sigma 40mm lenses at a reasonable price, haha! I can’t say a 3-in-5 chance of a “good” one is a favourable review of Sigma’s QC however. I think consumers need to hold manufacturers to account more strongly, the “bad copy” concept has somehow become accepted in photography when it’s unacceptable in the vast majority of consumer goods. Can you imagine having to buy and return 3 or 5 refrigerators in a row because the first ones didn’t perform properly? Anyway, that’s an axe to grind another time lol. I’m not surprised that a 40mm F1.4 would perform better, however. When making fast lenses, or wide lenses, and especially fast wide lenses, compromises necessarily come into the mix. That said, I think this is the best-performing-for-astro 35mm lens that I’ve tried thus far, but I haven’t tried them all yet! Haha
