When this song was released in 1973, I was 17 & a heavy rock fan...but when I heard it, it blew me away, but I never had the courage to tell my mates that I liked it ! I played it on a juke box in the local pub, & when the outcry started, as to who put it on...I lust kept my head down !! Possibly the most beautiful song ever written.

Hello - I first heard this song whilst still at school. At the end of the road was the most beautiful girl from a poor one parent family named Gaye. I went to a friend's house one night and there was Gaye! Sadly she took her life a few months later. This beautiful, sad song therefore has a special place for me. You may live by yourself but you still have Your Soul and a 1000 wonderful memories and Still, you have the Love of your Wife.

I let the love of my life go as well in 1975 (I was 13 but desperately in love with her) but despite 'building myself up' to speak to her many times, I just could not follow through. Her friends badgered me for ages to speak to her, telling me that she felt about me the same as I did about her but even that did not get me over the line. What a fool, eh? I still think of her know, almost 50 years later, wondering what might have happened. Cheers, Mark

This is a great bit of songwriting I first heard I was about 11-12. Then rejected all stuff similar for years as i closed my mind to anything that weren't (punk) rock. Then I got old. Beautiful song.

    Gaye
Won't you let me have a say
    In the way you behave
    I won't last another day
If you decide to go away.
You're the tray of nice things
    I upset yesterday
    The display of bright rings
    I let slip away.
    Oh Gaye
    You allay my every fear
    In a most extraordinary way
If I thought that I could find my way without you
I would not ask you to stay.
You're the tray of nice things
    I upset yesterday
    The mainstay of my dreams
    That I let slip away.
    Gaye
Won't you let me have a say
    In the way you behave
    I won't last another day
If you decide to go away.
    Don't go away
    Oh please stay
    Don't go away
    Please stay.

He never had much of an audience or following in the United States, save for Britons living here at the time. He was huge in Europe and South America and that's where I heard this song for the first time. In later years I tried finding the record in the U.S. but no record store employee even knew who he was. Fast forward to the new millennium and by God, someone posted it on RUclips. It would've been a shame for this man not to be discovered by American audiences, even after his passing. Thanks a million for posting it and God bless!

A very talented and under rated singer/songwriter, Cliff's music is Quintisential English, a very quiet, and private man with a gentile quality about his lovely voice. ive listened to his song's a zillion times over and will continue to do so. Worcestershire and the Music World is poorer without him.God Bless CTW

Regardless of the references above to poets, he is a complete original and there is an awful lot out there to explore and maybe to be covered by other artists. I followed him in the seventies, and more than once heard him on the radio; notably on a radio discussion where I recall him saying that the most important thing in life was love. I was a teenager and felt this was wonderfully adequate, but how true. What a remarkable man. RIP.
