That's the result of enabling the "Verbose or Highly Detailed Status Messages" Group Policy Object on XP Professional, or making the equivalent registry change in XP Home Edition. The machine also had a custom bitmap and icon pack installed. Maybe it was XPize.
I believe the original purpose of XPize was to make it so that all of XP's system bitmaps and icons matched the XP style, so the older style bitmaps and icons would be replaced.
Hmm, on that Acer system it looks like someone has put a custom icon pack on there or something, because when you were installing the mouse drivers the file transfer animation didn't look like the standard XP one....and judging by the rest of the system t does look non standard for an Acer....I guess the original owner liked to tinker with systems like we do.
Maxxarcade HOLY CRAP the 530 has a G33M03 MOTHERBOARD! THOSE CAN RUN SOCKET 771 XEONS WITH THE 775 MOD TAPE. You are LUCKY. any that have a G33M02 can't run quadcores and that means they can't run 771 modtape'd xeons. Look into it-- I'd love to see how far you could go with a $30 Xeon in one of those, just for gits and shiggles. the boards themselves (G33M03) go for quite a pretty penny on eBay too. don't throw those out.
Wow that first dell was quite specced out. A core 2 quad and 4gb memory. Throw in a cheap old gt 220 or someting and a 60gb ssd and that thing could pass as a decent computer now with win 10 or something.
Pardon my ignorance but how do you people keep finding these computers? Do people put them at the side of the road? Are there special places where you can pick them up? I wonder because I'm Dutch and never see any old computers you can take for free
I bought a second hand hard drive from a pc shop that had been "low level" formatted.. I plugged it up and deep scanned it using some recovery software and extracted the findings to a folder on MY hard drive. I found loads of pictures and flicked through them. nothing interesting apart from the last owner was someone ive actually seen before lol
I used a Athlon 1200 for a couple years in the early 2000's with an Abit KT-7 motherboard (yeah bad choice) and it wasn't that slow with WD IDE drives. Hope you scored some good songs and "pictures" :)
There's some old memories being brought back by the software on the desktop of that custom Acer, iTunes, NERO Burning ROM, Winamp, Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware, Trillian, all stuff I haven't used in a long time! I was kind of expecting RealOne Player to be on there! And _of course_ they're running Windows XP the way you're supposed to: As Administrator!! You're doing it wrong on XP otherwise!!
There's one problem I do not like about these Dell Inspiron 530/531 PCs: when they are turned on, the CPU fan spins at full speed, makes BIOS sound, and then the cooler becomes quiet.
those things are awesome. My company has three modern DL360's. I think they are generation 8 or something. That, and our other division has a PowerEdge R620
windows server 2008 R2 is a windows 7 based OS which does dns, dhcp, domains, windows deployment service (WDS), and lots more. i am using it as most of the things i said above but i only mess with it when i need to.
that last computer the athlon xp looks just like my athlon xp 1800 computer from 2002 (desktop wise) all but the itunes (i used realone player) Even by 2004 256mb ram felt really laggy I put up with it though. It wasn't all that laggy unless I had Kazaa lite running. I upgraded the computer to 768mb back in 2005 that fixed a lot of things. I actually kept the thing as my main computer until mid 2007. I even foolishly upgraded it to vista and surprisingly all the bells and whistles of vista were enabled by default. I just couldn't watch videos anymore due to sound and video out of sync. Nice bit of Nostalgia and a little creepy the desktop had most of the icons mine did back in the day.
If you haven't got that supermicro running after first power plug in, they will not boot as it has to power up the IPMI system first (which can take a couple of minutes) before the machine posts.
One of those optical drives listed itself as SCSI. Is there an Adaptec SCSI board in one of the PCI slots? SCSI is popular amongst retro/vintage computer users, whether for old Macs, Amigas, or Atari STs.
It's weird that somebody put such an old motherboard in that Acer computer because that case design came out in around 2005 and the motherboards they came with were much more capable since at least the ones I've seed had PCI-E, SATA connections and either DDR or DDR 2 ram.
The Goodwill down the street from me is selling those Dell desktops with Vista and Duo Core processors for $225 plus tax. They have about 40 of them but I doubt anybody is going to pay that much for a computer that old.
Hello latley I've been watching alot of your videos and I've been wondering what is the best computer that you have used cuz I'm looking for a new computer
That Asus guy sure had an interesting taste, one page through you'd see Modest Mouse and Aretha Franklin and the next you'd see Biggie Smalls and Dr. Dre. Hahahah
I felt good about my self when I installed 1 gb of ram into a pc with 256mb that I got free for switching to wind stream... That was my first upgrade.. :)
i had a dell 350-s same mother board and when it beeps like that it means it cant read the hard disk or the ram is lo longer working. i had that happen to me in my case both went out. i got my used and it was 4 years old at the time and two days after i got it it flat out failed i need ram then a new hard disk just to get it back up and running. And It is still RUNNING its 8 years old
I don't know this but maybe the motherboard on the Acer was replaced because (I don't know this) on the stock acer motherboard, there should be a splash screen but there is none on the new motherboard.
Maxxarcade I have had a few of these over systems over the years for repair. And judging from the panel it looks like a older unit with ether a Intel socket 755 or AM2 cpu running on an OEM board with a N Force chip set for the AMD ones and Intel chip set for the intel ones.
***** I have seen a lot of those Acer Aspires. That model is pre Pentium D, as it has the older font for the "Aspire" logo on the front. That model was most likely a socket 478 Pentium 4 from around mid 2003. One of my friends has one.
***** tinyurl.com/n9d7w5l, There is the model that Maxxarcade has. However, the vented side panel on his appears to be from a Pentium D era model. Wacky!
Those Inspirons are a nice find. I am still running a couple of Dell Vosto 200s with Core2Duo and the Quads would be a nice upgrade. Those boxes run Ubuntu just fine.
I've owned a few Inspiron 530's.. They are actually really nice systems.. Used one in my workshop for awhile.. They run windows 7 great with that Core2Quad
Maxxarcade Hey, I have an old PC from back in 2002, it has a Asus A7V8X-X, an AMD Athlon 2400+, 1gb ddr ram and a Radeon 9200 gpu (128mb version). It currently has windows xp, is there something I can do it so it can still be usefull? If it was yours what would you use it for? Thanks!! :D
If I had something like that, I'd probably use it for playing older games that don't run on Windows 7/8, or for playing music and stuff. You could also test different versions of Linux on it, so you don't need to use your main PC for experimenting. See if you can get at least 2GB of RAM though, the more the better.
Very interesting software on those computers. The two Dells were obviously used as servers. I wonder what that Server 2008 R2 install was configured for? The computer in the Acer case looks to have been used to pirate _all_ the things. You should take a second look at that Supermicro server, it looks interesting.
The visual tweaks on the XP computer at the end were actually kind of interesting looking, at least some of them. The ones that stood out to me were the clock in the lower right corner and some of the visuals in the add new hardware wizard.
You have made my day awesome. On a side note those Dells were badass, I keep hoping I'd get somethign like that but all I get are P4 Optiplex machines. Also I always got a laugh from dual fan PSUs, they act like cooling hardware that's not powerful enough will make it work
I've been using an inspiron 530 for several years now. The earlier model, like what I have, which could only run up to a Core 2 Duo, is a rather reliable system. Even with such a limited CPU, my system is still holding its own, and I'm pretty hard on it with modern games and always being on. Just have to have a discrete graphics card, the onboard Intel graphics is crap, of course. This system's not without its quirks, but I really love this computer. Once I replace it, it's not just going on a shelf, or getting junked. It'll find its place doing something of importance, and I hope to do everything I can to keep it running for years to come.
This was a pretty cool video to watch. I actually have an Inspiron 530s which is the same as the ones in the video, but the s stands for slim. Old as hell, and I used it a LOT, but when i open it, it looks brand new. I was so excited when my mom bought it for me... hit some cpu limitations, and i upgraded it. Damn old computers are cool.
***** Yeah, I thought about upgrading my current 2004 Compaq Presario with a 1.8 GHz AMD Athlon 64 to one of them but I couldn't be bothered to make the move! my current machine is good enough for youtube at 360p and facebook and emails etc.... currently my 4 Optiplex machines of that are sitting around in our spare room along with some old Pentium III era machines too and my old Amstrad pc2086/30
***** Its a 754 but I'm fine for what my system does anyway however I wouldn't mind a nice upgrade. I will think about getting an upgrade for my CPU next and also the GPU and probably get rid of the old 250W PSU if it gets too hot because of the new components
***** I don't live in the USA either, although here in New Zealand I find loads at the landfill and if the guy running the place is kind he'll let you take some computers, TV's or whatever.
I'm pretty sure that the "Executing: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wlnotify.dll" is due to the copy of Windows being pirated.
That wouldn't surprise me on a system like this. I'm going to part it out anyway.
That's the result of enabling the "Verbose or Highly Detailed Status Messages" Group Policy Object on XP Professional, or making the equivalent registry change in XP Home Edition. The machine also had a custom bitmap and icon pack installed. Maybe it was XPize.
MrMaguire
I noticed those oddball graphics in the Add New Hardware Wizard. Didn't know people bothered to customize that.
I believe the original purpose of XPize was to make it so that all of XP's system bitmaps and icons matched the XP style, so the older style bitmaps and icons would be replaced.
I really miss this type of videos :)
Awesome vid
23:57 LOL my old school PC hahaha
Holy Ram! lol
make it work. or trash it..

I'm always excited for new Maxxarcade vids!

2 years later : it will eventually boot.................
Soooo envy, I'd be so glad to get all these lil' junksters :D
Man, I wish that computers from random places just appeared at my doorstep! ;-;
"Holy RAM" is my new favorite phrase.
Pardon my ignorance but how do you people keep finding these computers? Do people put them at the side of the road? Are there special places where you can pick them up? I wonder because I'm Dutch and never see any old computers you can take for free
i was wondering, could anybody use a file server as a normal pc, like could you install windows on it and browse facebook and watch youtube vids?
I know I would definitely get some of the music off of that one computer.
Hope you are ok Aaron...please come back with some more videos!
Start.. Holy crap !.. like tornado.hue hue hue.
stop using the word scuzzie it is S.C.S.I
I used a Athlon 1200 for a couple years in the early 2000's with an Abit KT-7 motherboard (yeah bad choice) and it wasn't that slow with WD IDE drives. Hope you scored some good songs and "pictures" :)
"Good ol' windows vista taking it's time, Oh wait a minute" hahahaha
That Pc would be worth it just for the music to me. I'd copy it all over to my own collection.
+David Maglioli i use a core 2 quad q6600 for gaming with my gt 630 it runs fast

I have a dell power-edge and I always liked the RAID card initialization process.....you can hear all of the 10k drives spin up
that last computer the athlon xp looks just like my athlon xp 1800 computer from 2002 (desktop wise) all but the itunes (i used realone player) Even by 2004 256mb ram felt really laggy I put up with it though. The Acer might of been a garage pc, and someone went overboard with testing the spray paint.
If you haven't got that supermicro running after first power plug in, they will not boot as it has to power up the IPMI system first (which can take a couple of minutes) before the machine posts.
Haha I once found a nude pic of the young woman who previously owned an old lap top I trash picked. :P Not complaining about that, but I formatted it.
They had Nero Burning ROM! If they still had the keygen, it would be amaze, the music it make is great.
One of those optical drives listed itself as SCSI. Is there an Adaptec SCSI board in one of the PCI slots? SCSI is popular amongst retro/vintage computer users, whether for old Macs, Amigas, or Atari STs.
The old Wireless N routers from Netgear all have a (Somewhat Similar) design. I have one with the same design: N300 Series.
It's weird that somebody put such an old motherboard in that Acer computer because that case design came out in around 2005 and the motherboards they came with were much more capable since at least the ones I've seed had PCI-E, SATA connections and either DDR or DDR 2 ram.

12:35 I think its your CPU that giving problems. I have a dell 740 and there I have the same problem.
What is the "De-Oxit" stuff that you use to clean the RAM fitting surfaces? Would appreciate knowing, first mention I have ever heard of this.
I wish i could find old computers to fix up and sell where i live but it never happens.
Im talkng about computers from the DOS ans windows 95 era.
You sound like Matt Dillon
I have a Q6700 in my optiplex 755 music PC, the thing is a beast for a older processor, 8MB cashe :)
Hello latley I've been watching alot of your videos and I've been wondering what is the best computer that you have used cuz I'm looking for a new computer
9:41 I'm pretty sure you could've atleast TRIED putting password in like every other router password :P
25:00: Is it some special XP version? I don't remember New Hardware Wizard to have this graphic panel or animation.
Give me Q6600... I really need it...
Here those kind of processors cost a nifty 40$. :D

The dell inspiron machines will take up to 8 gigs, of ram. I'm happy to see it will take a Q series CPU!
What is "sheeh"? You can keep that acer case and put nespwchardware in it! ;) It looks nice.
I don't know this but maybe the motherboard on the Acer was replaced because (I don't know this) on the stock acer motherboard, there should be a splash screen but there is none on the new motherboard.
8GB of DDR ram? That sounds like it pushed a four digit price alone back in the day.
I upgraded from a Dell Core 2 Quad system not too long ago.
Damn if any of those motherboards were good i could've used one for my other hp desktop
Your videos live rent free in my head.
Just wondering, how are you doing nowadays?
yay! Computer video!
Respray the Acer, put new Hardware in it and you have a neat little computer
The ones with a password issue need the Ophcrack or kon-boot live CD treatment.
Is that your HH Scott valve amp in the background Aaron?
can i have a copy of everysong you found on hardisks
i can send you a harddisk for it
I just realized @11:48 that it could be that DIY power cable extender.
Never play music from a real band that does not give the music a royalty free license
That Acer is definitely not stock. Looks like something someone threw together for downloading music.
Ya, I noticed the I/O shield was cut to fit the Gigabyte board too. I wonder what the original board was.
Maxxarcade I have had a few of these over systems over the years for repair.

I really thought that there was a rotten potato in it that has just enough power to run the pc and the fans
Those Inspirons are a nice find. I am still running a couple of Dell Vosto 200s with Core2Duo and the Quads would be a nice upgrade. Those boxes run Ubuntu just fine.
