  • You asked, and Ed’s here to answer! In this special, Ed takes a look at the most frequently asked questions in the first-ever ICM Q&A!
First, it’s a look at Ed’s favorite story from the series: Wolbachia (00:25). Then Ed takes on a top question about animal sociality and whether social species have more robust microbiomes than their non-social counterparts (01:09). Next, it’s about time we pay attention to viruses and the role they play in our microbiomes (02:02). And lastly, one of the most common questions about the microbiome: How often does it change? (03:18). If you’ve got a question about any of our videos or your microbial partners in general, leave a comment below and we’ll be back in the new year with another round of answers!
Keep asking those questions and we'll be back in a few weeks with another Q&A episode! We're going on a brief winter hiatus but will be back in January with more videos every Monday.

I'm reading your book "Immense World" and learned among other things, that miniature spider hairs serve functions along with many other senses we don't share.

Hi, I just accidentally found you again, and listening to the first part of this video, I have an important question for suggestions on how I can control my gut's reaction to new foods. I have lived in Japan for 17 years, and eat plain and simple foods from the local markets. I use very little seasoning. I do eat the usual traditional Japanese foods, like tofu, miso, natto, etc. however I also eat alot nuts, esp. peanut butter; fruits and dairy products, not much cheese, very little meat, almost no fried foods. Now I get into these eating trends from time to time, like the one I am on now, no fried foods, and eating 3 kinds of fruit with homemade yogurt EVERY SINGLE morning (for several years)...Ok, so in 2018 I will be moving to West Africa, sometime during the year, and if not moving then visiting for about 5 weeks straight. How can I manage the change in diet, so that I don't have some strong reactio
n that puts me in bed for a couple of days?

The answer at 3:18 to how often the microbiome changes is crazy!
