- In 1996, the Power Rangers as you had known them were gone forever. In their place came one of the worst games I have ever played.

Fun fact about that first game's "soundtrack"; that's a stock drumloop that's appeared on several sample CDs, including relatively famous ones like The X-Static Goldmine (which was quite widely used by a lot of video game musicians, albeit much, much, much more creatively). So it's not even a custom made droning drumbeat going on over and over; it's an endlessly looped sample. It's actually kind of amazing, in the worst possible way.
Here's another fun fact; in the copyright info attached to sample CDs or sample packs both past and present, one of the stipulations you'll usually see mentioned is that the sounds contained on it cannot be reproduced "as is"- i.e., they have to be modified in some manor or they have to be mixed with other sounds and elements so that they're not the sole sound heard (this is so they can't be resampled and resold by rival companies, or people looking to make a quick buck). So not only is what's going on with the "music" here astoundingly lazy, it's also probably illegal, technically.
I'd be more then willing to wager that any other music the game has in it was made entirely out of premade samples in a similarly lazy fashion, too. The exact kind of stuff that gives the technique of sampling a bad rep in the first place.
This makes me think about games that use sequenced audio, where internally a drum loop could be found by itself, easily ripped, essentially what they're trying to prevent here. I guess in those cases it doesn't matter since the listener can't hear the samples by themselves unless they were to rip them from the game's music data.
Have to admit, the scene where the Zeo Megazord appears and takes down the monster in the pinball game was pretty dang cool
Even better when that's *actually Jason David Frank's voice* there. Granted, it's probably just a sample from the show, but if you're gonna use the presentation OF the show, at least GET the show's quality.
I remember that Zeo PC game all too well. My grandfather, at the time, was the only person I knew with a "powerful" computer that could actually run games. He was big into them, and one weekend when I went there he had bought this brand new game for us to play, as he knew I loved Power Rangers.
Well, we hardly even got the damn game to work back then when it was brand new, so I am not surprised at all that you had trouble even now lol.
It wound up crashing his computer more times than we could count, not that the game was any good anyway. INTO THE TRASH!
This is such an obscure game, but its what I love about this channel. He covers what he actually cares about, and it shows.
0:39 I find it funny how I saw videos that mention something as obscure as the Apple Pippin so often that I'm basically as aware of its existence as I am something like the NES.

Wow, I had no idea there were Power Rangers Zeo games... kind of surprising since I was still actively watching Power Rangers back then (lost interest partway into Turbo, until randomly stumbling across Mystic Force and Dino Thunder reruns many years later.)
Man, I never thought I'd see pinball table based around Leaky Faucet. I think I need this game.
Out of curiosity, since this series seems to be on the backburner, and it'd be WAYYY down the line, do you have any thoughts on Battle for the Grid? Personally I think what they've managed to achieve with such a small team and budget is really impressive and I'm really looking forward to its continued future.

Great video, to think that there are so many obscure video games about the power rangers! I knew about the pinball one and used to play it quite a bit but couldn't finish it, some of the boards I had no idea what to do. I can't wait for the next season!!

Oh man, this just had to come out during Jungle Fury on the marathon, which is surprisingly watchable after Mystic Force and Operation Overdrive haha
But no, this is another great video, Josh! I didn't know of the Zeo games, but as a kid I kind of dropped off when Zeo started. I figured I'd just gotten distracted by the next big fad and wandered off at the time. However, on seeing the episodes again during the marathon I remembered that kid-me was like IRRATIONALLY angry that they'd replaced Rita and Lord Zedd with these Machine Empire guys. It didn't help that in their introduction the Machine Emprie was supposed to be this big huge threat then in the actual episodes.... they really didn't live up to the hype at all.
Just wait until we get to RPM... do try to catch the first episode though, because... well, you'll see.
The height of my childhood Power Rangers obsession was season 2. I was a little less consistent through season 3 (I think it always rubbed me the wrong way because I loved the 1995 movie so much, then the show just told that arc a different way), but I too dropped off pretty hardcore during Zeo. I'd catch it occasionally, but I just found it kind of boring. Plus, it seemed like EVERY TIME I actually decided to watch it (instead of playing DKC2), that episode where Adam has a nightmare was on, which was super weird and off-putting.
But watching it more recently, I think I see the problem. Zeo strives to be "stronger than before" by putting significantly more focus on each ranger's individual characters and motivations. The villains aren't as good, but the heroes are much more well-defined, and the plots have a layer of polish and consistency that wasn't there in MMPR. And that Adam episode is now one of my all-time favorites, because I can now understand the context of what it was doing and paying tribute to.
But when I was 8 years old, I didn't care about any of that. I just wanted to see the POWER RANGERS, and unfortunately Ohranger's fight scenes and mechs had a rather different feel from Zyuranger's. It wasn't the same show, and it was a bit too clever and grounded for me to appreciate at the time.

I really need to get back into the old Power Rangers stuff. I do remember where I quit watching the series- Ninja Storm. Something about it made me go "engh". But this is making me want to go back and watch the old stuff, so I say great video as always. And it will great to see Donkey Kong get some more love and to see you tackle the Prime games... though I pray for your soul when you have to play Other M.

Oh god, yes. I haven't seen _Power Rangers_ (2017), but even I'M pissed! The fact that they used the first movie based on the teens with attitude since _Turbo_ just to sell DONUTS Is a dumb idea! This is why when it comes to superpowered kids, I stick with X-Men.
@The Geek Critique, oddly enough.. originally I didnt realize how lack luster some of Turbo actually was (compared to other Saban seasons)... as I was still way into the Power Rangers franchise at this point.

PS1 Lightspeed Resuce is serviceable. Looks as good as Breath of the Wild next to the N64 version.
I was only a little into the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when it came out and never followed the other incarnations, but looking at this I'm struck with how bland and uninteresting the costume designs are for Zeo compared to Might Morphin.

I didn't know about the Pinball game either tho, such a shame. Now Power Rangers Zeo for the Pipin wasn't a bad game per se. It was an action game with a clear objective, it had all the Rangers with their propper gear and considering the time it was released it was actually pretty good from the graphics department for a licenced CGI action game. Its just that the controls were SO GOD AWFUL it was nearly unplayable to the point it makes PRLSR for the N64 look like the better game and that one was probably the worst PR or even Sentai game ever released including Bandai / Tiger Electronics look alike LCD handheld consoles. Nothing tops that N64 title tho it was just the worst.

Hah! I wrote a script back then for everything up to Wild Force. But I never made it because this episode kinda bombed. I think there's just not as much of an audience for anything past Mighty Morphin'. But who knows? Maybe I'll continue this series one'a these days. I'm glad someone out there wants 'em!

3:09 Eww, look at those ugly black outlines around the enemies here when they go in front of the doors! How hard was it to clean up pre-rendered sprites back then? This is a reoccurring nasty visual thing I notice in some games that pre-render 3D graphics. I guess they couldn't do partially-transparent, anti-aliased pixels back then.

I don't think there were any. There was definitely a Carranger game, and there might have been a Megaranger game. But the actual Power Rangers IP wouldn't have another game until Lightspeed Rescue.
@@GeekCritique Unfortunately, the only Megaranger game I can find is for the SEGA Pico. Ironic, considering it's the series about video games.

Heh, I actually have a script covering all the games up to 2002. I wrote it at the same time as this one. But this video didn't really get much attention, so I'm not so sure anything past Mighty Morphin' is really worth the time it takes to do these.

I remember all my childhood the original power rangers were awesome, power rangers zeo were weak as shit and their lasers did jack.

There were no Turbo games (not counting the Carranger game). Or In Space. Or Lost Galaxy aside from an online flash game. You had to wait till Lightspeed Rescue to get a normal video game again, and the N64 one shown here is absolute garbage.
