Here's the very best tip i've ever known. Can't remember where I read it, I've never seen it mentioned in any casting video, or in any other article, but it is the best information on how to adjust a baitcaster that has a brake adjustment. If the backlash happens early in the cast, tighten the brake. If you get an overrun at the end of the cast, or after the lure hits the water, tighten the tension knob. The foolproof way to go is to tighten both a little more than they should be, and loosen them incrementally until you're comfortable. And of course, listen to what Randy said, because all of that matters too. But the tip described above is invaluable.
Great video, I sent this to my son as he is another state learning to use casting reel. Thanks again. And excellent tip on line that has been in a bird nest, I have done this in the past and learned the hard way.
On my spinning reels, I usually tie on a 2-Lb weight, toss it overboard, and practice back-reeling before I cast. I followed your earlier wisdom on spinning reels drags... I tightened my new spinning reel drag all the way to max and left it there for days. It ruined the expensive drag system, but at least with the practice I can now back-reel better than I ever could. Now that my drag is gone, I totally agree that drag systems are overrated. Back-reeling is where it's at. Thanks, Randy.
Great advise. I changed my line yesterday from 10 lb fluorocarbon to 17 lb fluorocarbon and I was getting backlashes which I hardly ever get. I'll try every thing you said. Thanks
Randy you forgot one thing, always adjust your drag, before casting any lure..While dialing your reel in for that long cast, Mr bucket mouth will test you..That is a bass 6lbs and up..SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE..
I meet him yesterday!! Loaded my new Abu Garcia revo up for flipping. Got out there picked it up and flipped my shakey head into a lay down. Saw him swim up to the worm Felt him take it in and I set the hook only to realize I never adjusted my drag. I set the hook again using my thumbs and he took off,! Tightened it down and got him in the boat. That my on for the year. 6.3
The Swedish engineered Svivlo reels are said to be more or less autoadjustable and somewhat more birds nest proof, using their unique casting brake, but I haven't tried one, yet. Hope to be able to soon tho, seems like a nice new piece of tech.
This applies to catfishing alot, cause your baits are all different weights and you have to constantly check your tension. Abu Garcia reels are really good about not getting backlashing.
You might have met my mom and dad over there. On Table Rock, Randy and Linda grohler in shell knob. Oh, and don't forget about the house foundations over by eagle rock state swimming area.
Randy what is your thoughts about putting a piece of electrical tape, stamp size over your line halfway down the reel and well further down than you could cast? I was informed it helps stop deep backlashes 🐟😎🐟
This has always worked for me. I'll take the lure I'm planning on using, make a long cast, pull 2 or 3 additional arms lengths of line out, and then put a piece of electrical tape across the spool. If you do get a backlash, it is much easier to untangle.

Great tips. This is what I follow you for. Thanks.
I needed this! Thank you
Great tips. I learned the hard way about filling the spool with too much line!

Thanks for some great tips.
Thanks for the info.
Thank you for the video.
Thanks Mr. Blaukat!!!

Man, I fill my spools up to the chamfer on the spool. 1/8 down seems waay under filled though maybe ok for things like skipping.
I agree with Randy on this one but honestly if something works well for you stick to it.
Braid seems to matter less for this issue(also comes down to specific equipment). I've noticed very full lines with flouro get nested super easily.

Good and informative video as always Randy.
Swedish Svivlo make baitcasters that don’t backlash and I think they are entering US market now.

Great tips sir! I usually use spinning gear but I do have one or two bait casters.

Great video!
A Shimano DC Curado is really close to backlash proof.
I agree I have one and once dialed in it does great.
I actually like the Shimano Curado 200K 's a little better
Love those older bb1 lews
Don't know how you keep coming up with ideas for your videos Randy, but you do and they're all good.
Glad you like them!
@@randyblaukatintuitive Lew's makes a reel that's not supposed to backlash. Just came out. FYI

On spinning rods, I let out a lot of line, Idling out with nothing tied on. You will never have an easier day with your spinning rod!

I don't have to do this with my spinning reels.
