  • Improperly cleaned panels either before or after prep can cause many problems. One I’ve encountered multiple times is the basecoat blistering or reacting. Here’s how to take care of that.

I’ve found that the toner 527 just really doesn’t like being sprayed wet, unless it is going over itself. It especially causes issues if I lay a coat of wet bed first, even with the 2.0 666/600 60:40 mix. I “think” humidity also plays a factor, as I’ve had some days where it wants to separate like mad, and other days it is perfectly fine. The best fix I’ve found is to lay a very light mist coat (almost like an orientation coat) out over the length of where my blend will be. Then I can lay slightly heavier coats over the repair for coverage.
A lot of the sikkens reds gave me a ton of issues, and the paint reps weren’t able to help out. Unfortunately the journeyman painter at my shop doesn’t have much more experience than I do, and doesn’t care to try to solve issues to help himself out in the long run. With a good amount of trial and error, this is the best fix I’ve been able to find.

I've gotten problems like that also. I wasn't prepping the panel good enough. I was leaving water on the panel that would evaporate before i got to dry it. When I applied base I would get these worm looking streaks. I since corrected my habits but i still gotta be thorough. I've been using micro fiber rags and they work great. The rags give me more time to wipe the panel dry before any evaporating occurs. I've been using the sikkens water prep also. Thanks buddy

The Sikkens water prep has worked great for me. I love it. I have heard of people using micro fibers and it working great. I haven’t tried it for myself yet though. Anything that works and makes your job easier is awesome. Always open to new ideas. 👍🏻👍🏻
