Rule of thumb when exploring food in India. Dont eat food from stalls/vendors even restaurants(that may look clean from the outside) that don't have a good amount of customers eating there. Connect with someone who could show you around.

These food poisoning happens within india also. I m from south from tamilnadu . I went gujarat and stayed for 3 days. Ate in a decent hotel. Still got typhoid and in bed for 3 months. Maybe bacteria from our intestine dont goes well from food from other country or taste.
I had amoebiasis at a very small age because I bathed in a river near my hometown, literally people were brushing their teeth and spitting in the river but my parents were ignorant and made me bathe
I feel awful that you got so sick, but I also feel bad for the vendor and his wife. They seemed so kind and sweet. I'm sure making someone sick was the last thing they wanted to do.
When i was young i used to think Pakistan is poorer than India After visiting India and Pakistan both i can say Pakistan is cleaner and better than India. And theres street food is probably the best food i have ever ate. And I also got sick for 5 days after visitng India So i think Travelling can change someones mind❤️
As a food safety inspection officer all I can add to this comment and don’t mean to insult the Indian culture or the Indian people but I’ve been to several Indian food restaurants in California due to reports of food poisoning , customers finding hairs in their food orders , food having foul smells. When me and my partner went to do a surprise inspection on each of the establishments you wouldn’t believe how disgusting those kitchens were, rotten food inside fridges, the floors were dirty , the pots were being used over and over again without washing, vegetables weren’t being properly washed either, the oil where they cooked was being reused it was already black, they were no gloves in any of those restaurants to handle food orders… they were dirtier than the Chinese kitchens we have been to due to sickness reports so in conclusión when it comes to Indian cuisine, is not the food , it’s the people who prepare it that they were never tough hygiene and food safety when it came to cooking. Interviewing some of them said they were street food vendors in India . I love Indian food but I prepare it myself, I don’t trust their food safety standards at all . They all have strong inmune systems because they are used to all of that so they don’t get sick . I don’t want to think how things are at their home , when it comes to food. And again I’ve met a lot of Indian people and they are really warm loving and caring and their homes are clean and their food is great . So I’m not speaking in general , all of my respect to them but when it comes to food safety I’d rather not eat at any restaurant.
I think there are precautions you can definitely take but still you have to accept it’s always a chance when traveling because we are sensitive to bugs and bacterias that don’t affect locals. It happened to me in Rome eating from a nice enough restaurant. I’ve also been to El Salvador a couple times. The first time I got deadly ill so the second time I took my own food and was fine until the very last day when I went to a big dinner with many people. Sure enough I spent more time in the airplane bathroom than in my passenger seat on the flight home. I just mention this so people accept that it can happen when traveling and just be sick, recover, and then continue your adventure!
Anita & Dana true, sometimes it not about hygiene at all. I can accept it as long as it is not so obvious that the chef not washing his hands, prepare food after nose picking, not cut their long black nails for the whole year...
I am an ex flight attendant and went to all the street food stalls all over Asia. Including India The one and only time I had food poisoning was in a 5 star hotel coffee shop where we were staying as crew. I worked as a flight attendant for 20 years.
I would recommend you to eat in stalls where they use plastic gloves 🧤 when they make street food, which may not be too many stalls but in *Park Street* area as well as *New Market* most shops started maintaining hygienic street food , and always go where it’s busy. But for Best hygiene I would recommend to try in *Haldiram Food City* they have couple of branches in Kolkata from Exide ie Chowringhee to Ballygunge . Hands down the cleanest and best place to try hygienic street food 🥘 in Kolkata. If possible try finding local food bloggers as well as check the *Zomato* ratings for the restaurants you want visit in India.
you're lucky Luke to survive that food poisoning. That part of the video on your boat ride, you looked like you were already feeling the effect. I also saw that plate of poison on the side when you had your head on Sabrina's legs. It seems like Sabrina said "I told you". Anyway...lesson learned. Stay safe guys.
Even in places where the hygiene seems quite good, you can get severe food poisoning. I just returned from Singapore where after eating some hawker food I became EXTREMELY sick! I ended up in the hospital for five miserable days :-(
sawadee2000 yeah it can happen anywhere. Happened to me in Singapore as well and when people said oh but Singapore so clean, completely annoyed the hell out of me. Such an air head comment.
Ugh, it brings back bad memories. I had food poisoning once, I was completely messed up for over a week. I really should have been hospitalized, but my parents didn't realize how bad I really was. I could probably have gotten better quicker, but alas... And I remember I couldn't eat solid food for a while even after I was starting to recover.
Such a wimp, I had food poisoning for about 2 weeks and still worked and did all my daily living things. Food poisoning or the poops isn’t really going to kill you. 😒
I frequently go to Hyderabad in India. My wife and daughter lives there. My wife is very cautious with what I eat over there. I've never been sick but I usually get the opposite effect and get constipated. I guess that's from an overload of rice I ate daily. Great video..
Talking about street food , well I got sick when I had VadaPaw in a local stall in mumbai but later my indian friends told me to visit good restaurants and street stalls that are hygienic. Restaurants are super clean and Hygienic in India.
I am Indian and lived all my life in India. I never ever dare to eat food from such places. Hats of to your guts. And water is another big culprit. It is not quality of water that spoils health but, the way it is handled by these street vendors.
Eating warm, uncooked food that has been sitting out in the Indian heat for the entire day is a blatant no-no. I’m throwing up in my mouth just watching this video.
That's the mistake foreigners do. Don't go to sketchy street food stalls where no-one is. They r for extremely poor people who don't have money to buy food. What did u expect when u went to slums there lol? That's not a city. People don't have much in slums. Go to crowded ones. And don't eat THAT much street food. Even indians can't handle that much in one day.
I don't know...the video is so sad. I felt sad watching it. Felt sad about your bad experience and bad about the person who made and sold the food to you, I swear the person was doing his work and did it with all good intentions, his intentions of serving you and even making a good presentation of his food - he probably went home that day saying that a foreigner ate his food and was clicking pictures and videos. I really felt bad about it. I have seen so many videos about Indian food and I'm so much curious to go there and taste it.
The purpose of this video was not to portray the vendor in a negative way. It was to show that it can be easy to eat street food that can cause people to get sick. I feel bad for him too because he was so friendly and actually taught us a lot about the different ingredients he uses. We love India and the food. I think this shouldn't discourage people like yourself from not going to try the foods. Just a reminder to be careful :)
Luke Martin RAW yes I understand. However I felt sad with the video, that was my feeling. Even during your boat trip it was sad hehehe...I felt sorry for you. I hope in your next trip you will have better experiences.
Vijay Singh Are you dumb? There’s clearly no correlation between wiping ur ass and showering. Indian people wash their ass but does NOT was their hands afterwards. No wonder many tourists went home sick after going to India. Even this video is about it😂
Guys although the Indian street food may seem mouth-watering & delicious,it will still lack basics of hygiene and cleanliness But just a benefit of doubt food is heated, grilled & warmed So ig still germs or maybe other microorganisms do get killed at such high temperature And also if one observed logically How come the vendor isn't getting sick
There's street food in countries like Indonesia, Thailand or Mexico too, but i think it's much cleaner than indian food because i never got sick when I go to those counties and i eat
Good video, glad you got better eventually. How does this relate to food in Indian restaurants in Europe? Do they have the same type of hygiene there or is it just bad in India?
I have enjoyed streetfood before. I did make sure that it was freshly boiled or fried, not some thing raw or cold. I did not get food poisoning from that. the ice in a fancy restaurant got me.
Luke, I absolutely adore your videos. I've often wondered if you ever get food poisoning from all the different foods you eat. This is good information... horrible to endure. All the best.
Omg you poor thing ! It seemed that he did cross contaminate the ingredients that he touched with his hands, I wished they would wear gloves 🧤 to be honest 😔 I love Indian food, and I’d love to visit but I’m afraid of becoming sick also.
I think the dead giveaway was the man not wearing a shirt. I understand India can be hot but if you look at chefs in hotels surrounded by pots with steam and many burners of fire going they are all dressed in their whites. He did then put on his shirt but it was too late even though Luke told him it's okay.
Women have to be careful and cautious..no matter which country...1.ideal timings for solo woman traveller is 7am to 7.30pm.. dawn to dusk in India..2.no night adventures 3. get 4g internet as soon as you land..such that you could Google for anything you want...4.get your antibiotics beforehand..incase you fall sick 5.if you feel people are staring at you..then just smile nd say namaste... people stare here mostly because of curiosity nd not to trouble you or any evil intentions mostly 6.women travellers carry a scarf or a shawl..u might need it in some conservative or religious places 7.to counter the spicy food here..you can have lot of yougurt..which is good for your health nd gut 8.to revitalize your energy..you can frequently have sugarcane juice, buttermilk..nd glucon-d( you get it in chemist/ medical shop )9.take uber or ola cab for travelling..but don't be so careless that you fall asleep in it 10.advisable not to drink or smoke publicly or any PDA 11.do not consume soft drinks or food offered by strangers..they could be vultures in disguise 12.you could ask educated indian women or girl students for any help or advice.. preferably 13.do not go to small lanes or places were no women is there..14.in metro cities there are women taxi..incase you need..15.there are Big bazaar supermarkets in most of the cities..which is a indian version of walmart 16.Basically you cannot stereotype India..you find every range nd diversity here.. poverty to super rich...Street food to five star hotels..filth to clean nd greenery nd calm places..17.india has conservative places were women are fully covered i.e sarees to modern cities like Delhi..Mumbai.. Bangalore..hyderabad..kolkata...were you find women are in jeans..skirts..modern clothing 18.welcome to India..just don't panic.. come with no expectations.. explore yourself..there is fun in chaos here😁😀 19.if you find Street dog here..just walk far from it and don't give an eye contact..and you would be fine 20.at religious places nd temples you will find holy cows..monkeys..just be far..and you would be fine 21.to reduce culture shock and to get acclimatized best to first visit Mumbai then south India then finally to North India 22. Best route could be Mumbai to Goa to Kerela to Bangalore to Hyderabad to Delhi..Agra..mathura...Jaipur.. Lucknow..Varanasi...23. India has two types of toilets..one is indian toilet..where you need to squat..it is good for bowel movement nd people suffering from constipation 😊 and the other type is western toilet where you can sit and surf on your phone 24. Hinduism is a major religion in India..along with many other religious practices..Muslims..Christians..Jews..Buddhists..Jain's..Sikhs..25.in India major languages are English and Hindi..and many local languages..26.most of the times you don't have to Google translate in India because most of the people speak English with understandable indian accent 27.install your Google maps in the phone for hotel and restaurant location and reviews...28.incase you travel in a tuktuk vehicle for transportation..do not fight or argue or giggle at them...because they are as such frustrated with their struggle for existence...and have very less patience for arguments 29.try not to argue with lower strata people for petty things..am saying because some tourist do🙄 30. When in Rome..be like a Romans...31.india is not what media/ news channels portraits as slums..dirty..filthy..full of poverty..rapes...you will know India ..only when you visit..32.have yakult probiotic drink, amul buttermilk,Amul yougurt, sugarcane juice, coconut water, bananas to avoid upset stomach..
India is still not so clean a place. The way I saw them handling food is so dirty. This may not be all, but I saw one for which the worker was all sweat while he is mixing the food and the dough as well. Take care of your health as we enjoy your videos. Good luck, good health.
For all the guyz giving hate about india......this type of unhygienic street food is not all over india...the most popular cities here have the most unhygienic street vendors...but it is not like this all over india...tourists come here and visit places like mumbai delhi kolkata which i believe have the most unhygienic street vendors which set up a bad image on foreigners.....don't hate guyz india is very beautiful country with lots of flavour
You were brave to try street foods in India I visited India many times but never brave to taste any street foods. Ate only hot cooked food and bottled water only. I was nuts about hygiene so much so I used lots of Dettol wipertex to clean my hands ~overkill 😂 Miss their breads 👍
Quite a few of my favorite vloggers have gone to India in recent months. Every time I watch one of the videos, it reinforces my conviction that it's one area of the world I NEVER want to visit. Too much noise, too many people, too dirty. Yes, I've had food poisoning before, and it's no fun.
I always have Imodium with me. I have a very tolerance for food that is not properly cooked or the process of cooking is dirty. A man not wearing a shirt with prepared ingredients in front of him should have given you blazing signals to run away.
Indian keyboard warrior: "ooh noo, bro, that must be bangladesh !" Or " it's in the bad part of the country where ignorant people live ..." Our food in india is excellent and hygienic. Nobody gets diarrhea from indian food. Our streetfood vendors are trained to be extremely hygienic , much more so than in western countries !!! How dare you comment on my country which you don't know anything about... India is the richest, most advanced country in the world!! Hahahahahaha......
Luke, glad to find your second channel. So sorry that you got food poisoning in India. I hope that you made it back to your room before you became sick. Good thing it didn't happen on the boat ride. Looking forward to listening to your other videos.
i am indian and i have never been sick eating any kind of street food in india in my life. nor does anyone i know ever had diarrhea or food poisoning from bad food here. food in india is safe fresh and clean. however, i've had life threatening food poisoning, diarrhea, vomiting in united states, singapore, and japan several times from unclean food. in my opinion the food quality in those country is much poorer. in india even though we do not have nice looking shops every thing is fresh. in western country the food is processed, and many of those proccess is unclean.
Wow I would not touch Indian street food if I were you. I wouldn't even go to a street food stall in China if the kitchen looks dirty. You are truly adventurous.

Rule of thumb when exploring food in India.
Dont eat food from stalls/vendors even restaurants(that may look clean from the outside) that don't have a good amount of customers eating there.
Connect with someone who could show you around.
excatly
Just dont go india at all 😂
The key is freshly cooked food. Anything sitting for even 30mins is breeding ground for bacteria
The man had his dirty filthy hands in the food and you expect to be fine ? No way dude yuk
Did you figure out why there feet are on the tables??
Floor was too hot 😂

thanks for sharing your honest experience! sorry to hear you got sick! it’s great you are sharing the great, good, and sometimes rough patches of food experiences.

These food poisoning happens within india also. I m from south from tamilnadu . I went gujarat and stayed for 3 days. Ate in a decent hotel. Still got typhoid and in bed for 3 months. Maybe bacteria from our intestine dont goes well from food from other country or taste.
Got sick watching him touch all of the ingredients with his hand during the preparation....yuck!
You're right, I don't even like watching european chef's that overuse their hands....
They never would have expected people like him visit their stall. Generally their customer base don't care about hygiene and can even digest rocks.

As a food safety inspection officer all I can add to this comment and don’t mean to insult the Indian culture or the Indian people but I’ve been to several Indian food restaurants in California due to reports of food poisoning , customers finding hairs in their food orders , food having foul smells.
When me and my partner went to do a surprise inspection on each of the establishments you wouldn’t believe how disgusting those kitchens were, rotten food inside fridges, the floors were dirty , the pots were being used over and over again without washing, vegetables weren’t being properly washed either, the oil where they cooked was being reused it was already black, they were no gloves in any of those restaurants to handle food orders… they were dirtier than the Chinese kitchens we have been to due to sickness reports so
in conclusión when it comes to Indian cuisine, is not the food , it’s the people who prepare it that they were never tough hygiene and food safety when it came to cooking.
I'll read this one later this sounds interesting
Bacteria adds to the flavor of Indian foods! 😁
bacteria exists in every food even the cleanest most hygienic of them. Bacteria literally exists everywhere lol

It DOES affect locals, though. I have family who are locals and they know not to eat at sketchy looking street food. You have to really be careful
People are making fun of the person making that food but u cant see the effort and smile on his face while serving u, he had served u with full heart
Dude if he serves you poison with full heart, will you eat it ? 😑
I am an ex flight attendant and went to all the street food stalls all over Asia. Including India The one and only time I had food poisoning was in a 5 star hotel coffee shop where we were staying as crew. I worked as a flight attendant for 20 years.
What did you eat at the coffee shop?

Indian people have a strong immune system to eat such food like that without getting sick which is their big advantage during survival situation lol
bring your own food, water & air if you have to go to India for some reasons , sprinkle your entire body with holy water too
you're lucky Luke to survive that food poisoning. That part of the video on your boat ride, you looked like you were already feeling the effect. I also saw that plate of poison on the side when you had your head on Sabrina's legs. It seems like Sabrina said "I told you". Anyway...lesson learned. Stay safe guys.
after he made that video on that boat ride.. you didnt see him make the world record in the 500 yard sprint to the nearest toilet.
Even in places where the hygiene seems quite good, you can get severe food poisoning. I just returned from Singapore where after eating some hawker food I became EXTREMELY sick! I ended up in the hospital for five miserable days :-(
It can happen anywhere to anyone. Hope you feel better!
U tripping , hawker food in Sg is one of the cleanest in the whole Sea

You're lucky that you recovered without serious health problems....
Restaurants are super clean and Hygienic in India.
maybe you got the bug from dirty hands, unknown sauce, dirty container or maybe dirty water they use.
Stephen Brown definitely unknown sauce it's called his shit
As in Egypt, the flies give it extra flavor!
I am Indian and lived all my life in India. I never ever dare to eat food from such places. Hats of to your guts. And water is another big culprit. It is not quality of water that spoils health but, the way it is handled by these street vendors.

Words of wisdom luke..... Never eat raw Street food only well cooked food 😀
Visiting India is a very big health hazard.
Sad but truth we indian don't use gloves, it's really very dirty.

So thy but hole is clean as a whistle but food serving hand has buthole juice
basant vimal sharma Yep they wash their “arse” but their hands. It is however common sense to wipe ur ass with tissues.
Vijay Singh Are you dumb? There’s clearly no correlation between wiping ur ass and showering. Indian people wash their ass but does NOT was their hands afterwards. No wonder many tourists went home sick after going to India. Even this video is about it😂
Maniac Cok Oh so was I wrong for saying the truth? The truth hurts 🤧
Guys although the Indian street food may seem mouth-watering & delicious,it will still lack basics of hygiene and cleanliness
But just a benefit of doubt food is heated, grilled & warmed
So ig still germs or maybe other microorganisms do get killed at such high temperature
And also if one observed logically
How come the vendor isn't getting sick
Because he doesnt eat his own food or he is used to it
im sorry but i wouldnt even buy food from
a place like that here in europe if it looks that dirty lol u were asking for it
There's street food in countries like Indonesia, Thailand or Mexico too, but i think it's much cleaner than indian food because i never got sick when I go to those counties and i eat
You're literally asking people to stay outta India, well, might have been a wise tip.
Sorry to hear that your sick luke, i hope you get better. :)
5:01 I know it's not good. I can see from your face. Your face said that it's not good
Good video, glad you got better eventually. How does this relate to food in Indian restaurants in Europe? Do they have the same type of hygiene there or is it just bad in India?
That food was too fresh, everything uncooked and out in the open
Out of experience, trying to find a place that serves good food in india is so hard , even alot of restaurants have very dirty food
I’m 100% confident that I’d get food poisoning if i eat something which is said to be safe IN INDIA :((((
Thanks for the hate
I have enjoyed streetfood before. I did make sure that it was freshly boiled or fried, not some thing raw or cold. I did not get food poisoning from that. the ice in a fancy restaurant got me.
Luke, I absolutely adore your videos. I've often wondered if you ever get food poisoning from all the different foods you eat. This is good information... horrible to endure. All the best.
This was one of the only two food poisoning experiences we've had abroad. Luckily, it's pretty rare!
Look at the amount of flies around the papari chat stall man...
Glad you're fine. That must have been a bad experience plus the heat and everything. Thumbs up for being so brave to try lol
It was just a matter of time my friend…..
Unhygienic seriously it's not that hard to wash your hands or clean. 👀😡 Forgot to mention India is a hot place so food will go off quite quickly.
Choose the food stalls carefully. Ask the locals which ones are good.
No matter which state you visit in India.
Have you seen the water? That’s all you need to know.

Quite a few of my favorite vloggers have gone to India in recent months. Every time I watch one of the videos, it reinforces my conviction that it's one area of the world I NEVER want to visit. Too much noise, too many people, too dirty. Yes, I've had food poisoning before, and it's no fun.
