Sounds like his agents wanted him to play Superman/Batman, he said no because he wanted to do independent films, and they blackballed him.
Not true. He wasn’t blackballed. After turning down blockbuster roles (with 10 year commitments) he was no longer an actor the studios sought. He didn’t want to be typecast in the persona the big studios wanted him for. He wanted to do smaller, independent films (Like “O”) with lower profile. Wanted to stop paparazzi chasing him, camping in his front lawn. He left Hollywood, not acting. He was never blackballed, just dropped out after fulfilling his extended contract. It’s written that his best work is done in the indies.

We watched the whole series again just last weekend. He is just a fantastic actor (Robert Downey Jr: “He [Josh Hartnett] doesn’t know how good he is.”).
We watched everything he did last year and were so glad to see him working the variety of roles he loves to do. And, despite being a dutiful wife, I have to say he is still one of the hottest men ever 😂 .
Penny Dreadful is a great comeback for him. The writing is amazing and almost poetic and such great performances.

Bruce Wayne is looking older and older. Pretty soon he will be running with gray hair. I think he should be younger like when Christian Bale played him. It's sexier. A senior citizen Batman will not be that interesting.
he would have been financially set to play all the indies he wanted the rest of his life if he had done a superhero role....odd decision.
The deal was a commitment of 3 films over 10 years. He didn’t want to be known as a superhero. His decision at only 24 was a good one. Some of his indie performances are terrific. He’s a multi-millionaire living happily with his English wife and 4 kids outside London. I say good for him living the life he wanted over $ and fame.
