I think the concept of different colors just adds a fun factor in collecting. So, throwing in random patterns and color combinations from the manufacturing process capabilities gives another dimension. However, in the end, it is the sound quality that matters to me.
Yup! If its pretty - great! But I need it to be quality - and unfortunately, especially when buying used records, coloured vinyl is much harder to tell what shape the records are really in!
I pre-ordered the new Urban Outfitter variant of The New Abnormal by The Strokes The mockup had a GORGEOUS dark swampy translucid green, but when i opened the record it had a much lighter green, almost kinda like the seaglass colored vinyl It's not that bad, it's still a beautiful record, but I was expecting a lot more green
People don’t realize that PCV (vinyl) is clear to begin with. This means standard black is colored vinyl, if you think about it. I have several colored (other than basic black) albums in my collection. However, I only buy the colored variants as additions to my collections. And often, it’s because the particular album is only offered in the other colored variant. If I have a choice, I’ll pick black because, for whatever reason, they just sound better than the pressing with another color. I know mastering and pressing is key, and if an album in another color is mastered and pressed well, they will sound just as good as the black version. But since I’ve seen too many colored pressings with sound issues, I will still always choose black.
Agreed! I do appreciate that cool variants are a huge reason so many casual vinyl fans exist now. And when given the choice between coloured/variant vinyl and black, I almost always choose the variant option - they look cool, what can I say?!
Oftentimes i just prefer black vinyl instead of color. Dust, smudges, scuffs etc can be seen very visibly on black vinyl when you want to clean records especially used ones
Such an underrated opinion on coloured vinyl! I've definitely bought a clear record used that looked fine visually, and was full of scratches when played back!
I love color vinyl, but many times I am disappointed by what I get. I am curious to see what the Rolling Stones Record Store Day Beggars Banquet color vinyl will actually look like. The color vinyl on the current Stones Mono box set is actually very nice. This was a very interesting video. Thanks.
But... who cares? The point of a record is the music -- not the window dressing. Remember, all records used to be black -- the colors added now are just a sales gimmick. I tend to be generally ambivalent to the color of a record, but I can say that I have never gotten a record which was pressed on blaze orange vinyl that played correctly. I don't know why it's true, it just is.
As much as many of us don't care, the coloured variants are a huge driver of vinyl sales (particularly for younger fans!). I actually made this video a number of months ago in response to hearing a ton of Taylor Swift fans being disappointed that the records they ordered online looked so much different than what they expected. I was curious to learn more about why myself!
@@howtovinyl Funny how, as much as they say they want to be treated like adults, they still like pretty colors, isn't it? lol As coarse as the above sounds, I can say that one of the cooler vinyl sets I saw featured glow in the park vinyl and a UV laser pointer. The way it worked was, while the record was spinning, you could simulate acid chem trails on it with the laser pointer.

I actually liked this translucent yellow and white vinyl, it looks so interesting 😅 Thanks for the video!

8:18 I really like this green 😂. Muted and goes with the black label well imo
I swear it looks grosser in person! Haha!
@@howtovinyl LOL
I like that green too - I would call it Camo green
Interesting video!
Thanks!

Most of the time, coloured vinyl is a gimick. I have some myself, but this still rings true

Thanks for watching! Yeah - such a gamble if you aren't literally seeing a picture of the record!
My 10 year old Daughter loves colored vinyl. She says its pretty for Girls.
Do like the marbled colours variants
I got some cool ones and not so cool ones 😂 and it's ok. I just want that the music sounds great 👍
Often, the album covers don't look right either.
I listen to music, not colors.
