  • If you’ve ever set an alarm on Apple's iPhone and used the Snooze button for a little extra sleep, you may’ve noticed that it counts down from nine minutes exactly. Apple made the decision deliberately, and I’ll explain why in this video.

FCC required radio stations to announce their call sign every ten minutes. When Fairchild engineers developed the first clock-oriented chips, that's what they picked. Digitally "programming" a snooze of 9 minutes is exactly the same difficulty as one of ten minutes, or any other minutes, for that matter. Quite a few amateur radio stations in the 70s (mine included) had a clock with a nine-minute snooze to remind operators to announce their call sign.

@@johnmoore1495It's called an "ident." I believe the main reason for them was because back in the day radios didn't tell you exactly what frequency they were on so the idents made you sure you were listening to the right station. The fcc still makes radio and television stations do idents today, but only between programming breaks.

      1. You'd have the code for multiple digits already, as you'd already have used it for the seconds (if you do it the complicated way and even need code for it)
      2. 10 minutes would start at 9:59 in order to not have 0:00 be displayed for an entire second, so you don't even get another digit.

The inability to adjust snooze time for alarm clock is the most annoying “feature” I’ve encountered on iPhone. The explanation of “programming single digit” as a reason does not convince me as a software engineer very much as well. This whole topic is a shame. :-( “We made it so that it would be as bad as in the Stone Age technology!” - sounds like a perfect reason as well!
