- Fungus gnats aren't as harmful to plants as other pests but they sure are annoying.

omg i looked through several videos .......like 12 videos, u have the best video. thank u.
Pretty good delivery!!
So concise and well
Delivered! Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it helpful!
Thank you for this video. I had tiny little bugs run around in my pot soil when I watered but had no visible flies around my pots so I couldn't figure out what they were. Untill you said they're tiny little grey bugs moving in the soil before they turn into flies. I will be repoting my plant.
Very helpful! Trying the sticky traps. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for educating us and helping the world wish more people would educate
I am not yet finish the video... but I know I will enjoy this as always. Thank you.
Thanks! Should be a helpful one!
Thank you!! Because I never knew that composting material would promote fungus nats.. Liked your videos, allways very clear and informative :) 🌿🌿
You're welcome! Yes - the larvae feed on fungal matter in the soil. Compost is full of fungal matter, which is good for plants but also for the gnats!
@@HousePlantJournal Thank you so much Darryl!.. I was actually thought about doing it in the past but luckily i'm subscribed to you 😅🌿.
Oh my gosh, thank you!
Hello! I really appreciate your videos! Thank you!!! I just discovered fungus gnats in my Jade Plant, which was given to me almost a year ago. I'm thinking replacing the soil might be a good idea, aside from the gnats. I'm a little concerned about this, as I've never done it before. Do I shake the soil from the roots? Or just replace the soil on the outer areas? Also, I will want to reuse the same pot - it's a large one and I don't have the budget to replace it because I've spent too much on new plants lol! So is it ok to leave the plant out of soil for a little while as I clean and prep the pot? I don't want to damage this plant! It was my first one and its done amazingly well, growing from one sad looking branch to a full and thriving plant. :) Thanks again!
Hi what do you suggest if the cause is a jade bush that belongs to the property in which I live at. I can’t replant.
After I saw a fungus gnat in my grow I found out that I had an early case of root rot and fixed the situation properly by cleaning the roots like washing your hair with fresh water and a bit of fungicide so far so good.
I either have fungus gnats or totally crispy plants- literally no in between for me.
Don’t know how RUclips knew because just found them this morning and not searched it on the inter web, AI is officially superior to man 😩
I get asked about fungus gnats several times a week. Now I'll just send them the link to this video!
Great video 😊
How do they appear in the first place? Like how does a single fungus gnat know I have hide plants, follow me in my house and find my plants?
I have many plants that need to stay consistently moist so I break up and soak mosquito dunks in water for 24 hours and then use that water to water the plants. Since I started doing this I haven’t had an issue with fungus gnats. The bacteria in the dunks kill of larvae.
Excellent information. - Ruthie :)
Hi Darryl! I love your channel! I recently learned mosquito bits will do the trick for fungus gnats! Any thoughts?
I've never tried them because I've never had all that many fungus gnats to deal with but the mosquito bits seem like a simple enough solution.
House Plant Journal thank you! I think ill try! They have gotten bad at times in my fittonia 👀
I am seeing a small black insect with wings in my soil, but I have not ever seen any of them fly??? I’m trying to identify what they are , I can try and get a picture , but idk what else it could be besides fungus gnat , are there any other bugs with wings in the soil?
I have some kind of gnat and they are not going near the yellow traps. Also we just had 2 weeks of freezing cold weather under zero. They disappeared but came back as soon as it warmed up. I’ve tried everything so next is to burn the house down. They are even outside in droves trying to get in the house.
Very informative! I hate pest!
Does overwatering lead to fungus gnats too? Thank you for the informative video.
"Overwatering" is a misleading word. If a plant is getting adequate light, it will need water. When you saturate the soil, it *MAY* become suitable for fungus gnat spawning. The solution to preventing fungus gnats is not to water less or "be more careful with watering". Here's a video that will clear things up: ruclips.net/video/4VgBH4_f9GM/видео.html
Thanks!
What's a soil brand you recommend that we can buy?
What country are you in?
@@HousePlantJournal I'm in Canada!
@@NaNgNg0 I like ProMix brand soil
Great video. But wondering why you have your phone screen pointed so we can see your phone ? No disrespect here at all it’s just a question? 😎
I've tried everything! Mosquito bits.
Bottom watering.
Ugghhh.
Help.🙏
Before u pot a plant that will be indoors, or if you buy a plant that u want to put indoors , boil water and pour it into your potting mix. Wait for it to cool that will kill any larva that might be in your potting mix and makes it sterile.
Hmmm, I've never tried that - thanks for the suggestion!
Omg i put dish soap on soil will my plant die
Use mosquito bits to get rid of them
What about using neem oil to get rid of fungus gnats? A bunch of my plants got infected from my roommates plants and repotting them would take days...
Neem oil doesn't kill pests directly. It disrupts their internal signalling system which causes them to "forget" to mate or eat. It doesn't act as quickly as regular insecticides or physical removal (i.e. repotting).
Some other alternatives not mentioned in the video that I have read about and tried with some success are mosquito bits (making a mosquito bits “tea” and watering your plants with that) or waiting until your soil is dry to sprinkle diatomaceous earth on top. The first method essentially poisons the larvae when they eat the dissolved bits, and the second method will dehydrate the exoskeleton of any insect that crawls across the microscopically sharp shards of silica.
Are they gunna damage Mary Jane?
Haha, I have no idea about that!
❤
there's a high frequency piercing sound coming from your video that hurts my ears
Sorry about that - I never detected it while editing. Could you please tell me what device you're using to listen and whether it is through speakers or earbuds. I will try to fix this - sorry!
@@HousePlantJournal Android just the phone speakers, thanks!
@@fernfractal Hmmm, I hear it on my Android phone speakers as well. I will look in to it and make the necessary adjustments in future videos. Thank you!
I hear it on my iPhone as well
can't hear it.
I hate that those bugs I’ve killed 50 so far
weird high freq tone in this video... around 14k or something my guess
Had to put this video at 1.75x speed.
Thanks for making the video, but please get to the point
Do you have something high-pitched going on in the background cause it's annoying trying to watch the video.
Fungus gnats don't die, they multiply............:)
Not true fungus gnats larvae eat at the roots of plants causing the plant to look really unhealthy and the eventually dieing. So you need to take fungus gnats a lot more serious.
This is only true if you have rotten roots. Fungus gnats only feed on decaying matter. They don’t bother healthy plants nor their healthy roots
