  • Here's a clip from an Instagram Live session where I explain the underlying mechanism of root rot - and why warning someone about "overwatering" without considering the LIGHT situation is pointless.

    Thank you for sharing. I feel like you explain plant care like a doctor would. In depth and easy to understand. My whole plant care has gone from 0 to 100 after reading your book. My plants are thriving.

    You noted about taking a pole/stick and poking around the soil. I have done this and find that the soil will dry out much quicker b/c I am giving the soil aeration, which has definitely helped when I have gone and added too much water and the soil is soupy wet and to break up the compaction with my soil. I try to use more pumice/perlite too. Thanks for the video. It is very helpful. I need to get one of those light meters too.

    If, despite my usual care, I find one of my plant's soil stays a little too wet for too long, I'll poke holes in the side of the plastic nursery pot, leave it out of its cache-pot and put it in a brighter location. Once it's recovered and doing OK I'll usually repot into a better draining soil mix. I find that this add airflow and stimulates the plant to use up the water quicker so the roots aren't damaged as a result!

    Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! You make things so clear! I have my plants sitting directly in front of an east facing window with the blinds raised, however there's a covered patio right outside the windows. I purchased a three-way meter and for light it registers 0. Are my plants getting proper lighting even though the meter says 0? BTW...It only moves when I go outside🤷🏾‍♀️

    • @HousePlantJournal
      @HousePlantJournal  4 года назад

      I bought the same three way meter just to test it - it really doesn't work for light. A phone app would work better but a dedicated light meter device would be best. I recently put up an article listing light requirements for lots of plants that need "bright indirect light" here: www.houseplantjournal.com/home/bright-indirect-light-requirements-by-plant

    Oh my fucking god. I was just poking the drainage holes of my pots because I'd read that overwatering causes oxygen to be depleted(?) from the soil. I can't believe that was actually a thing that can help

    Oh my gosh. To your right, the large leaf 'philodendron'? I rescued a plant last fall that looks exactly like yours, but mine had only one leaf. I took it home, put it on my northeast windowsill. Takes forever for a new leaf to uncurl, but a 4th leaf is sloooowly opening up. In my search, I came upon a 'blushing philo.' which suggested bright light, so I put her (Philis) outside. I'm not so sure, tho. What type of philodendron Is yours? Mine doesn't really look like a blushing philo. -- it's mostly green. Is it? Thanks for your videos. I am really enjoying The New Plant Parent - learning at lot.

      I also rescued a few philos in recent weeks and they are blowing up. They didn't like being blasted with sunshine and are doing waaaay better inside, at hip level near a panoramic window. Just like he is saying here.

    You are correct in your complete information. However, the simple answer is OVERWATERING. You can really have good open mixed mixture soil bright light and yet if you water too much the roots will rot. Take my final extreme example CACTI........You KNOW if you water them too much in a pot even with cacti soil and a good mixture and plenty light they will still develop root rot and die. So the easiest answer for the average plant-keeper is yes your soil should be correct for that plant and the light should be correct however, don't overwater.

    • @HousePlantJournal
      @HousePlantJournal  4 года назад +1

      There are always different points of emphasis. Your "simple answer" is what I described at 4:00 in this video. People have read plenty of advice about strategies of watering. It is light they have difficulty understanding (specifically when the instruction is "bright indirect light").
