I've tried all the solutions. Traps seem to just catch the adults going out for a stroll after they're done laying tons of eggs.
Neem oil and insect soap seemed to slow them down a bit, but regular application still didn't eliminate them.
Mosquito bits seem to have the longest term impact but I found that the gnats will still come back if I let the soil dry all the way out then water it again.
I think the only solution left is to burn the house down and start from scratch.

worst part is if you listen to her you will spend over 100 dollars to get rid of gnats and still have the problem when you are done. this lady is like so many others here on yoptube just a salesman who will tell you anything to sell a product. every video you watch on youtube now has something to sell and use very deceptive practices to get you to buy their crap. i tried every method she has said and they dont work. at best they keep them down to a minimum that is all. you will have to keep buying the products over and over again. even the mosquito bits she does not tell you how to use it but i have tried up to 4 tablespoons to one gallon of water and it still does not work. if the person is selling something run like hell and dont listen to them their job is to convince you to buy it.

When I moved into my first "real" apartment I decided I wanted to beautify it with plants, so I bought 8 houseplants from Trader Joe's. It was Spring time. A few days later I saw a few little flies, so I squashed them, but after a few weeks my whole apartment was infested. I was so embarrassed. After trying a few things and doing research, what worked best for me was: first, make sure the soil is dry; treat the soil weekly (or as scheduled) during your normal watering for a month with hydrogen peroxide (I used 1 gallon of water and 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide for all the plants to not damage them); set up shot glasses beside the plants with apple cider vinegar and 4-5 drops of soap on the surface; place yellow sticky tape above or near the infected plants, remove weekly or when filled with gnats; spray the leaves with a mixture of 1-cup water, 2 table spoons white vinegar, and a tea spoon of soap. Spraying the leaves prevents other bugs, as well, from eating the leaves. After a month they will be gone, you can till the top soil and return to watering and caring for your plants as usual.

I saw one yesterday morning whilst I was getting ready for work which was about 4 inches across and I those ones really stress me out. They are quite chunky as well. I don't know why I'm so scared of them, but sadly my bedroom seems to be their favourite place in the house! I found 7 just in one month once. Constantly worried about when I'll find the next one. Here's what has finally worked for me after weeks of battling an infestation: I removed the top two inches of soil form each affected plant, let them really dry out (for me it took like 3 weeks because these are big plants in big pots!). Meanwhile, I set yellow sticky traps, sprayed the soil with neem oil (not sure how effective this was, but it was worth a shot). By far the most effective was the window fly traps, clear sticky traps that adhere to your windows easily. They've caught nearly a hundred between the two traps, maybe more! Once the plants were well and truly dried, I watered using a mosquito bit solution and for the last few days I've seen very few flies and the problem is markedly decreased. Best of luck to everyone, you will prevail!

Sprinkling cinnamon on the top layer of one of my plants that's in a tiny pot and needs to remain moist has kept the fungus gnats completely away! The water runs off the cinnamon, but finds holes where it can go, and waters the plant just fine. It's a dracaena and also seems to be doing just fine, still growing like a weed!

Fun fact, diatomaceous earth is the remains of little ocean dwelling critters.

I feel like it acts almost like a sealant that kills whatever gnats are already in the root system and prevents more gnats from traveling down INTO the soil when it’s moist after a watering.

I’ve tried a lot of things to control gnats. I’ve noticed you were “spraying” a tiny amount of diatomaceous earth dust on the leaves of the plant, but I have personally put one inch of it directly on potting soil to cover it ALL, with a spoon, and it DID work! It may not be aesthetic, because now I feel like I have white soil everywhere, but it worked sooo well and I will probably just put tiny rocks or sand on top of it to make it look more cute.

Does it fly everywhere when you water it?

Hi Harli, can I use a store bought neem oil spray as a preventative by cleaning the leaves of my plants with it once every week?
