  • Stanley Kirkby (1878-1949) was one of the most prolific recording artists of the 78 era in the UK, starting in the days of wax cylinders through to the early 1930's. Under his usual pseudonym of "Walter Miller" that he had used from very early days, here he sings "I'm in seventh heaven" from Al Jolson's 1929 film "Say it with songs". What is perhaps surprising here is the red hot accompaniment provided by Edison Bell's musical director Harry Hudson, in a style that was just not the norm for Stanley Kirkby who normally was more often allocated ballads and waltz songs, with a few comedy numbers usually labelled as by Walter Miller. Had Kirkby not provided the vocal on this track, I suspect it would have been released as by "Harry Hudson's Melody Men" with an anonymous vocal chorus.
