Mario Lanza hands down is one of the truly great tenors of the last century. Listen to the absolute assuredness and precision of his vocal line and the expression in full abandonment and elation and love for singing! Oh God what a loss for the opera world! In this moment I morn for him! Thank you Mario for your Godly giving. Notice how he acknowledges the pianist for his “beautiful” voice! I love you Mario!!!
Chenier is a role he was born to sing, and no tenor has ever sung this demanding aria as well as he. What an exciting, wonderful experience to hear this. Thank you!
@YITZMG Welcome. I think these home recordings dictate as to why so many people was so critical of Lanza. I think it's simply because Lanza simply, had it all. His voice was phenomenal. Power, unparalleled beauty and heart. Evey tenor wanted what Lanza had.
It’s something when you have a voice that can drown a piano. Quarter track recordings in the living room to record. There’s no question that his voice was powerful. If this doesn’t prove so, then nothing will. 7:48
With total respect for Jussi, Franco, Beniamino, Giuseppe, and many other greats, if any single voice saved grand opera in the 20th century, this was probably the one.
I just listened to the other Mario, that is Del Monaco and thought he did a tremendous performance of this aria and now i listen to Lanza and Holy Crap he blew my frickin ears off. Lanza with-out doubt had the more explosive voice and it's volume was just enormous . Lanza had he chose Opera over Hollywood undoubtedly would have dwarfed any other Tenor and Primo Tenore of the 50's . I've never heard a voice so incredibly penetrating. I think Mario was right when asked about his voice he would always point heaven-ward and say "It's God's voice , I'm just the humble care-taker of it".
If it wouldn’t be vor his movies, his persona would have never been captured in those days. If he would have gone on to do operas, he really would have been lost to us. It is because of his movies, his crossover songs, both on Italian and English that we are still enjoying this wonderfully talented Star. He truly was one of a kind. God took him too soon. Thank you, Mario, for giving so much to us. We will love you forever.
Creci entre melomanos escuchando a los grandes de la epoca dorada del Bel Canto, y al oir por primera vez a Lanza note esa diferencia. No era solo la belleza de esa voz, era una emocion sincera, profunda.Desde entonces lo sigo con devocion.Elena.
As much as I enjoyed Mario's operatic recordings, what amazes me, and still does, are the "Great American Songbook" recordings he did! No operatic voice could sing a "pop" song like Mario! I sometimes wonder if he was an operatic tenor who could sing "pop" songs or a pop singer who could sing operatic arias!
Amazing, raw, uncut beauty of Lanza's voice in a practise. What Aria is this? I've spent the last year trying to convince myself that Lanza was not the best tenor that ever lived. This has synched the deal...there is none better.
This recording should end the argument of whether his voice was a legitimate operatic instrument. In this recording, it was- and quite possibly one of the greatest Bflats that I've ever heard. Coming from me, the ultra cynic, that is a compliment. However, it was Mr. Lanza's choices and inconsistency in vocal recordings that will haunt his call for "legitimacy." Here, he is in the singer's formant, that part of resonance that opera singers must ultimately master, consistently. WOW!
" Ho ascoltato Mario Lanza durante un ricevimento in California negli anni 50. Per timbro, pathos ,squillo, quantità, non ha nulla da invidiare ai suoi colleghi tenori più acclamati con i quali canto spesso". Renata Tebaldi. Cit.
Lanza did smoke, but not heavily. However Enrico Caruso used to smoke three packs of Balkan Sobranies a day, or Egyptian cigarettes that would rip the throat out of mere mortals.... Lanza's later voice was certainly darker, however it was also richer in substance... you only need to listen to his Voce e notte recorded in 1958 to realise that. By 1959 his voice was effected by his health, however even then he could sing a lot better than virtually anyone alive.
I talked about Mario with his oldest son Damon and he told me the day of his death he was singing so boldly and loud that the laundry workers heard him in the basement and Mario's room was on the 4th floor of the Hospital. Mario's voice was not affected by his poor health rather his voice got darker and bigger in the last 2 yrs of his life.
The 1958 and 1959 recordings show no vocal deterioration at all, and the Italian Songs disc especially is among his most spectacular. He was only 38 years old so he still had the muscular resiliency of youth in his throat, even as the muscular resiliency of his body had weakened.
i agree with the comments below... popular acts like rihanna, katy perry etc are sad sad excuses for singers... not gifted like Lanza in ANY way, shape or form
@tubeindividual I agree that he was no Caruso, it is of my opinion that he had a more beautiful voice than did Caruso. Lanza had some health issues but not from smoking. He ate his health away.
NO CARUSO me hubiese gustado escuchar , AQUI MISMO A DEL MONACO Y CORELLI LOS UNICOS ADEMAS DE BONISOLI YGIACOMINI, PERO LA VOZ DE LANZA ADEMAS DE SER TAN PODEROSA COMO ESTOS COLOSOS SERIA SIMPLEMENTE MAS BELLA.
Just an addition to what I previously wrote. Back in the 1960's I remember hearing some of the great operatic voices of the day "struggling" to sing "pop" songs and for the most part it was pathetic at best. Leontyne Price did an album of "pop" songs accompanied by pianist Andre Previn and the album was best not being released at all! By the way I loved Ms. Price's voice. But singing "pop" songs was not her forte.
@talondriver6 Hi, exactly what I too had done. I have tried my best to listen to every singer on the market - but, as you say, this synched the deal for me..there is none better! No, not ever..! If this is an AREA then obviously it must be from some OPERA! According to critics, he would never be able to sing the full length of any opera. What utter nonsense.
I agree that he had a more beautiful voice than Caruso. But if I had the choice to see in person I would still see Caruso. Something about Caruso God should not have let him ever die. Though he sure did treat his kids not so good. And when I say he had a more beautiful voice, it's not because of one of those "I don't know comments" from the current opera singers who themselves obviously don't know. Just because you can sing a hi C or D doesn't mean a whole lot, except monster.
Not operatic singer? Really? How he can be worser than any operatic singer in his time? Or even before. Haters screaming on nothing. Technique, vocal is more important, Cocozza can sing!

Questa è una voce stupenda, che non verrà mai dimenticata soprattutto dai veri intenditori

Amazing, as usual. Passionate and persuasive. Beautifully sung. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Incredible!
I think his ''legitimacy'' and his status as one of the greatest tenors ever lived has been settled for good...

incredible sound....people will be saying the same things about him in another 50 years....he had something, unique.
5:01-5:03 amazing... Big powerful voice right back to normal talking voice. Beyond words. His talent leaves me speechless. Gone too soon
Great! Voice!

Gosh. His suit. And his voice. Everything!

These unforgiving runs are executed so spectacularly by Mario, what a gift to us this was preserved. Ty Gallant entry
Unsurpassed perfection!!!

The aria is from Andrea Chenier. I'd say it was written for his voice, little did Giordano know!

Lanza sounds fabulous here-too bad he did not record some complete operas.
He was in the process of recording whole operas and performing leoncavallo's Pagliacci Opera in Italy prior to his death.
Wow!
Bravo ❤

He was no Caruso, I agree. Lanza was technically, vocally and artistically better. This is typical Lanza; loud and awesome

I had always heard that he had great difficulty learning and remembering music.
