I have this plane and it is one of my favorites! Fit and finish is very good. Using a standard LiPo will be absolutely fine with this plane and offers plenty of power, although I know you like the HV packs. Landing the P-40 is a dream ... greasy landings are the norm.
I may be biased because I’m a P40 fan, but mine is my favorite model in my collection as far as looks go. Flys good, but does have a tendency to high speed stall if you are jerky with the elevator. Fly smooth and it will do anything you want. Nothing better than greasing in a landing with it. A shame the esc doesn’t like the HV packs, but I guess they didn’t have them in mind when they designed it. I’ve never had a problem with mine on regular lipo packs.
Looks like a fun one! I've always loved the P-40 as well. Cool story about Apopka HS. Small world! I went to Seminole up in Sanford. Live closer to Deland in Volusia Co now. We have a great flying field up at the Deland Airport. Come fly with us sometime if you're in town!
Excellent video Jon!! I have this bird and was having the same power problem I thought something was wrong with the ESC or battery. Thanks for clearing that up. So hopefully a new esc will fix this for full power potential. Love how you talk through the video and tell stories it’s really cool. I was a Marine for 21 years here at Camp Lejeune. I was a 0811 Field Artillery. Did you not join the Corps out of high school? Love your channel Jon. I hope to add the F-16 e-flite to the hanger soon but it’s been on back order for so long man!! Have you heard anything on when this model will be available. Hope you are well thanks for your service to this hobby !! Semper Fi!!
Jon was tapped to join the USAF after leaving high school. They wanted him to be an aviation mechanic. He ended up not enlisting into any service and went into college studying game development and design. No idea when the F-16 will be back in stock - but if you place a backorder via bit.ly/3PZUcEs, you won't get charged until it ships and you'll save a place for when it does come back in stock - that way you don't have to wait on it. Cheers!
FMS makes great stuff. That said, they are famous for not putting adequate ESCs in their models. I had the FMS 800 trainer plane, and the manual claimed it could be flown in 2S or 3S. Flew it in 3S and burned out the ESC almost right away. I opened it up only to discover they had installed a 6 amp ESC! Totally not adequate for 3S.
I never had any problems with the predator esc,s but I always run the highest C rated lipo i can get. My 1400mm fms warhawk came with a 70amp esc and I run the 4,s 75c 5000mah lipo,s I also run a 5,s liperior 65c 3300 and it exploded the stock prop! So I had to get a master airscrew prop and gator rc spinner and its as baddass as the eflight 1.5m mustang on 5s, and haven't ever changed the 70amp esc
Hey guys I have a slightly older version of this plane and it doesn't have Reflex and I don't have any issues with the esc. As a matter of fact I fly mine on a 5s 4000mah and it flies great!!!!
I bought that one about 2 years ago and she's a sweet flyer, Flys great on a 4s 75c 5000 liperior pack, handles 5s well but I'd advise a master aircrew prop or ypu will blow your blades. I got a new carbon fiber nose cone from gator rc and buddy let me tell ya!! Though very sweet and scale on 4s
I had failed to mention i threw a 5,s 65c 3300 pack in it that blew the prop so I'm wondering if maybe you just got a bad 70amp esc with the plane. Mine rock-n-rolls with the 5,s
Just Got a FMS P40 1400 a few days ago. I just bench tested a SMC 4s 4400 HV pack charged to 4.35 per cell. It initialized with 4 beeps indicating 4s and I ran it at about three quarter throttle until the pack came down to 3.8v per cell. It never went into LVC. I noticed that the Horizon Hobby site specs list the ESC as 70 amps. My P40 came with an 80 amp ESC. I wonder if they have upgraded the ESC
Not too fair dipping the score for the esc. That would be like me criticizing a model for not working with LiFe batteries when its rated for LiPo. Same here really, the stuff has to be tuned for that, but I’m certain the esc included could be programmed with low voltage off like any other with its programming card
If we review something and give it a good score, people say we're bought and paid for. If we report a problem we experienced and adjust the scoring to reflect the problem, we're not being fair. Can't win lol
@RCnurse We aren't bashing FMS at all. We're reporting our experiences with the model. Like in what world is "This warbird is almost perfect" considered bashing?
@@TwoBrosRC Yeah I get it, some viewers are giving you a hard time because they can’t perceive a flight experience like y’all are receiving. Yeh Brian Philips put 6s in the T28 1.4m with same power system. After it took off similar happened. I tried 5s on the T28 and the Amps were into +130A. This is a 10/10 plane for ppl who don't use SMC or willing to change the esc like quite a few do anyway. I think I seen suspension in the gear?
Our opinion is that you shouldn't have to change the ESC out to work with 4.35v per cell. This is the only FMS model we've flown that had any issues with the ESC. If we run into issues, it wouldn't be a true review if we glossed over them and said "Well, it would be perfect if not for that issue that's made it quite obviously not perfect." As far as how it handles and looks, we said it in the vid - it would be a 9.5 otherwise. The plastic Fisher Price wheels definitely hold it back a little from being 10/10. Otherwise it's phenomenal.
Great job! When you say speed controller is that a BEC or am I mixing my terms? Still more power than my old gas warbirds and of course PSS slope soarers. No gyros in those days. So many cool things in this hobby. Thanks for sharing.
Another question - any thoughts on showing the FMS 1700mm P-51. Its about the only warbird, besides the P-40, I don't have. Know there's a bunch out there, but no new ones.. They all seem to be older ones with one issue or another that's not acceptable in newer planes now.
I'll be darned. So that's why I had such a bad experience with the SMC HV packs in my Freewing Rebel. I couldn't figure out why it lost power when the battery still had plenty of voltage.
What a coincidence....... just got my FMS 1400mm P-40 and it was missing a hub cap also.....fortunately I'm just going to design a new set in Tinkercad and print my own. Also noticed quite a few spots of crunched foam on the airframe right out of the box. Very unusual for FMS. Where did your final CG come in? Book says between 50-55mm but even with a 4s 5200 pack all the way forward closest I can get is around 68mm. Haven't flown yet so if able let me know. Also did you need any flap/elev mix. Most times split flaps don't need any mix but curious to know if I should add any before first flight. I was a bit disappointed with the cosmetic issues right OOB . But for the price (with a 10% discount) I guess I can't complain too much. I'll be using regular Lipo batteries and save the HVLi for my EDF's.
No idea what the CG balances at. We don't really do the scientific measurements. If you use a 2200 to 2800 class pack, put it further forward on the battery tray. If you use a 3600 to 4400 class pack, move it back further on the tray. There's not really much else to it than that. Shipping damages happen occasionally, though sometimes FMS goofs. We usually add a bit of down trim to flaps on props regardless.
