Believe it or not, it’s actually quite disappointing coming from Illumination (it’s a move we would expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios via Frozen, DreamWorks like with King Fu Panda 4 and Pixar with Toy Story via Lightyear and the announcement of Toy Story 5 and the potential for more non-original Pixar movies which will very likely do the studio more harm than good) that the consistent streak of the Despicable Me movies would end here (yet it’s currently expected since after 2023, Chris Renaud came back to make sure he doesn’t have to age up the characters, let alone the children of Gru and Lucy) since 2023 was the year where (at least in my opinion, unless a lot of people want to agree with me or at least see where I’m coming from) if not much else, Illumination would be on a roll with one of its Mario movies and Migration.
"no, no I don't think I will"
Where the Includes paid promotion tab at?
No dice, mouthless!!
Bold choice for a title Cellspex
The girls not aging is criminal in my opinion. The girls growing up would bring different challenges for Gru with could be very compelling to watch.
Margo could go through high school drama and Gru wouldn't know how to handle it, Edith could become rebellious and teach Gru patience, Agnes could maybe mature a little bit so she could contribute more to the story.
The girls apparently only age by a year, which suggests DM4 might take place in 2013. They did do Gru having to deal with Margo's sudden interest in boys in 2, but that's been about it.
Margo could fall for someone who actually wants to be her boyfriend
In the DM4, Margo got bullied off in school.
The solution was apparently help the top dog bully steal something out of Gru's old school. While it is an 'interesting' take, it's certainly NOT applicable to daily lives or to common people in general.
I don't think this movie is salvageable, I hope next movie would just focus on Margo, Edith, and Agnes growing up like Inside Out 2 but with Minions screwing things up... but I guess it's too mature for Illumination.
I mean, it wouldn’t to age them up a couple years
The girls becoming more integeral to the overall story would be really interesting and aging up the girls is the best way to be able to do that. Its about time the girls have more an important part to the films and seeing them grow up and thus develop different personalities and motivations is overdue
how are we supposed to have the girls not aging yet suddenly we now have a baby, is the baby going to stay a baby forever???
He said he is open to them aging now
Yeah..now lol
Bro the 3 movies takes place a span of less than 2 yrs. Some people look the same for more than that
@@stevenmark4407 ..... Not at that small age.
A six year old look considerably different than a four year old... And a fourteen year old looks considerably different than a twelve-year-old.
For the first 15-16 years of life... Kids changes FAST! Very very fast.
After that it slows down.... Until you hit your fifties and then suddenly it becomes a lot more noticeable again. Especially women, hitting menopause for women... Phew.
These movies apparently take place one year after the last, the girls do age, but only by a year.
Also I think u could've done a good storyline where the girls are insecure about Lucy and Gru having a biological child since they're adopted and that's a legit thing that happens in the world where the oldest child/children were adopted because the parents thought they couldn't have biological children/wanted to adopt first then they get a surprise child and the adopted children feel insecure because this child is blood to the birthparents vs them who were adopted.
My farts are better than CellSpex’s farts 💨
Dammit that’s actually pretty good!
I was thinking that too omg
@@tatehildyard5332 thank you. As someone who was raised in foster care (in Canada luckily) I've seen this. heck I've seen a adoption fall out because of this. The family had an unexpected pregnancy and then my former foster sister was diagnosed with mental issues and just like that she was in the system again. They even had the audacity of giving her a memory book and I'm thinking "WTF? U're giving this child u ADOPTED up and u think its okay to give them a memory book?" Now granted I think at first she didnt understand what was happening as for the first couple of months she thought she was going back but man that's just HARSH. IMO I think if u adopt a child its for life and that includes any diagnoses that come later and any birth children after. It messes people up to have a "forever family" fall through like that.
@@davidfitzpatrick6535 that's very cruel. Is people not taking adoption seriously? Maybe that's the reason it's super hard to adopt in some countries.
"We don't want to age up the characters" means: Why spend more money on new models if we already have the ones from the first movie.
I mean, it wouldn’t to age them up a couple years
Margo in high school, Edith in middle school and Agnes as an older elementary schooler
Maybe have the girls persue following their parents footsteps into being spies and being more active and actually participating in missions would be very compelling and would help develop their characters more
Margo being the brains, Edith being the Brawn, and Agnes being the support
They cant just make them a bit taller
The director saying he wanted the franchise to be like the Simpsons showed how out of touch the studio is
I heard that as "Illumination plans to milk this cow forever, just like Fox did to the Simpsons".
If you're still on the DM/Minions train, get off now.
I mean that director was the man behind secret life of pets, whoops
My farts are better than CellSpex’s farts 💨
@@SavageGreywolf At this point I'm only getting back on the train if, by some miracle, several animation channels I watch put out a video declaring DM 8: Minions in Space a movie that's surprisingly worth people's time and better than anyone would have guessed that they recommend people check out.
Out of touch? The Simpsons made tons of money and ran for years and years. Yes eventually the fans hated how mundane it became--but it took them a long time (and money) to get there.
That is exactly what MANY directors want in a film!
Poppy literally looks like Gru and Lucy's lovechild. When I first saw her in a promo, I thought she was Gru's daughter grown up until I saw that the girls haven't aged.
This! I hadn't heard anything about this movie other than Lucy and Gru had a baby, so when Cell was showing clips and I saw Poppy (before Cell mentioned the character's name and everything) I legit thought she was gonna say that there was a timeskip at some point in the movie and that was their baby lol.

They could get kidnapped and be out most of the movie that way. Just saying.
The girls are the one thing that added any interest to the plot of this franchise. Unfortunately they haven't really had them do anything worthwhile since the first film. And poor Lucy has NEVER been interesting despite having lots of potential to be funny and weird.
@@carlotta4ththat already happened in the first one
@@waffler-yz3gw and the third one, point is?
The perfect example of just how little this franchise cares about Gru's daughters is when Margo gets back from the first day at her new school with a bunch of glitter all over her and tells Gru that she's being bullied. And... that's it. We never see those bullies. She never mentions it again. We never get any sort of resolution to her problem. That's literally all we get.
But hey, look, kids! MORE MINIONS! Laugh! Laugh! Forget about the human characters! They don't matter anymore! Look, that Minion just got pooped on! Hahahaha! Isn't character regression fun?
HAHA MINION
HEY KIDS FORGET THAT BULLYING PLOT! LOOK! MEGA MINIONS (Clash Royale lol)! THEY ARE MINION SUPERHEROES! SO AWESOME YYY YAY!!!!!
THOSE WACKY YELLOW TICTACS JUST BURNED DOWN A PRIDR PARADE, LOL!!! THEY'RE SO SILLYaa
OMG that's actually so tasteless! Ugh, I feel so bad for these girls, with every movie they get less and less to do, they could have not been in this movie and not much would have changed.
This movie feels more like Minions 3.
For me, "We don't want to age up the characters" just translates to "We don't want our movies to have any interesting conflicts that audiences could relate to"
Exactly
this made me realize inside out 2 is one of the few movies (ive seen) to age up characters
Because they are lazy and have no talent?
My farts are better than CellSpex’s farts 💨
@@CutWat Which makes sense because the first Inside Out was released 9 years ago.
The kids worked well in the first movie because they were kind of the catalyst for Gru to change, it was about Gru struggling to maintain his evil plan when he also wants to give these children a something he never had: a childhood. If they grew up I feel like they could do something interesting with that, I actually like the Edith wanting to be a villain idea because it sounds interesting. And the minions remind me more of bananas even more, because when they expire they expire hard.
I definitely agree, a plot about one of the girls wanting to follow in their father's footsteps when he very much wants to leave the life of villainy behind would have actually been an interesting and dare I say compelling plot. But nope. Instead we just get more minion slop, despite the fact that one of the main reasons Minions 2 worked better than it's predecessor was a reduced focus on those little yellow tumors. At this point just give us a movie with Gru as a young adult doing villain things with the minions just showing up in the backdrop for gags or whatever, because the human characters are very much the strong suit of these films.
can you tell me what's a catalyst?
@@cutty911 In this case it essentially means they were the cause for his change. They were the reason he wanted to change
The problem with catalysts is that once they've caused a change they're no longer needed. The girls in movie one and Lucy in movie 2 resulted in Gru stopping being a villain and helping the good guys respectively. So Gru going back to being a villain will always feel like a regression.
@@uanime1 That's why instead of just being catalysts they need to do something else. Like Edith wanting to be a villain
This felt like a Despicable Me Tv show where 6 episodes were sticked together to make a movie
Speaking off, i surprised thise series never really got a tv show
In other words, the Return Of Jafar approach to movie making.
I mean why not a TV series at this point. Instead we get more movie.
I agree
My thoughts exactly when watching the movie
I feel like Gru became really flat and boring as a character after the first film because nothing really happens to instigate a big change in him. Like in the first film, he accidentally softened up to the girls after they accepted him in the scene where he blows up the fairground stall, and he pretty much had a gradual change of heart from there. The second film kindaa gave him some growth in that he shouldn't throw away opportunities because of his bad past experiences, but it pretty much tipped off from there.
It'd be really interesting if we had a film about the girls aged up to teens, and gru as a father would have to adapt to that change. Not only would a lot of fathers relate to that, but we'd finally get to see some growth in our main character after several years lol.
Aging the characters up for a sequel would be such a good idea if they just hire a fuckin writer who cares lol it baffles me they can pour so much money into everything about making these movies except the MOST IMPORTANT factor, the actual plot, just get someone who cares holy damn.
Higher ups in corporations consider an idea like this too risky to do though. They're just too out of touch.
Puss in boots 2 was a miracle, even more so when DreamWorks still totally botched KFP4 anyway.
Watch Despicable Me 1, then watch Despicable Me 4. The difference between their writing is shocking. The contrast really highlights what all of Illumination's movies have been since Despicable Me 1.
Actually don't watch this movie.
Actually just sail the seven seas
Actually just AFTER ALL THE WASTED YEARS
That's why the first movie remained as their best movie that they ever make. After that, it's more to cash grab franchise
The juxtaposition of Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 being in theaters at the same time and the huge difference in how they treat their audience is both fascinating and pretty sad.
Reminds me of the irony that Inside out 1 and The Good Dinosaur came out the same year, how fitting is it that both instances of this involve Inside Out?
@@mr.eggsandwich8138the good dinosaur was also a Pixar movie on top of it.
I know I would rather go see inside out 2 again that was such a good movie. It’s such a shame. We got a bad movie after it came out.

My farts are better than CellSpex’s farts 💨
That is an immensely sad statement to make considering the quality of the third movie
That must mean it’s a very very bad movie
Kung Fu Panda 4 has that same problem.
In a discord server with some kids i’m going to go to college with, one of them said that they watched this under the influence of some substances, and yet still couldn’t find it funny.
If you can watch a COMEDY movie while drunk and/or high, and NOT find anything in it funny, that’s the mark of a bad comedy.
Hard agree. My brother and I got stoned and watched Norbit hoping we could razz it and it'd be funny bad. Nope, we both agreed it must've been a bad comedy because there was very little laughter to be had the whole time. If anything, we laugh harder when we get to tear into just how terrible the movie is. I also laugh because pretty much the worst guy I've ever met (so far) thought that movie was funny, which clues me into who the movie appeals to.
There were like three jokes in the entire thing that got so much of a light chuckle out of me, even if I was absolutely drunk off my ass when I went to see it that number probably only would have doubled at the most.
This movie just seems like the most typical bland and generic kids movie to stimulate babies, taking 0 risks to secure the bag. Great choice of profile pic btw.
That is a final nail in a coffin if no high can create an improved viewing time for certain films
If I can't enjoy it sober, I definitely can't enjoy it high.
Notice how this only comes into question in the 4th movie? That's because the previous three movies weren't stupid enough to bring attention to any time gaps. Despicable Me 4 introduced a _flipping baby,_ which immediately makes the audience notice the time jump and go "wait, why are the girls still the same age then?"
Yeah, it’s a common trope for characters to not age unless there’s noticeable time differences or the creators want to establish it’s been a while.
Feel like this franchise would have been better if it was like those ProZD skits about “a really evil guy but a really good dad” where gru actually got to be you know…despicable
Making him a member of the anti villain league in my opinion was a bad idea. And him being a single dad wouldn’t awful
You know what would’ve made more sense? Have Gru’s brother Dru take an older Edith and teach her to be a villain, so that the family can actually do something.
But I guess that’s asking too much.
The movie should’ve definitely aged up the cast.
Make Gru’s son a kid and not a baby so the two can have an actual relationship.
Age up the girls and make Edith a villain that works with Dru (who would still be relevant because the 3rd film left off on Dru taking the minions to continue doing villainy and Gru being gleefully ready to take him on.)
I’d also bring back the old villains to do a super villain team up, which would’ve been a FAR better reason for Gru and his family to go into witness protection.
Also have Gru hating his new life in a funny gag montage instead of starting plot lines that’ll never get solved. Keep the plot focused.
Dru is doing bad and Gru is trying to keep him under control while also trying to not be caught by his past villains who are seeking revenge.
With Dru being manipulate to help the villains trap Gru, with Brad saying “he’s changed his ways” or something to avoid a plot hole.
And have a big final battle where Lucy is fighting say El Macho, Dru is fighting Brad, Agnest, Margo, and the Mega Minions fighting the vicious 5, and Gru, Edith, and Gru Jr fighting Scarlet and Vector.
It would be an avengers style finally, and even though it would definitely not be the end of the franchise, it would lead the franchise into a new era. With Gru Jr being the next Gru and carrying the next line of movies.
I have this whole thing in my head, I believe this movie could’ve been a really satisfying film for Despicable me Fans.
So yeah, that’s my take!
If I cannot have this kind of movie, I'd at least expect some
fanfiction from this.
Wouldn’t it make more sense for Edith to want to work with Dru than Agnes?
@@hunterolaughlin I meant Edith! I can’t remember everything lol
I mean, it wouldn’t to age them up a couple years
Margo in high school, Edith in middle school and Agnes as an older elementary schooler
@@kmmk5022 you mean it WOULD lol
So just from hearing the premise, I don't understand why Gru and his family have to go into witness protection. The man has a veritable army at his disposal, as well as an assortment of weapons and scientific gadgets. Hell, he and his family took on a whole army of nigh-invincible, mutated Minions, and El Macho, and came out on top. Why would he ever be worried about some guy he knew back in school?
Don't question the plot hole. It's supposed to pad out the run time
Plus he had already captured him pretty much on his own once before, (don't act like the generic AVL goons really did anything cuz they didn't) and that was him holding back severely, so why worry at all about some chump he used to know when really all he'd have to do is just blast him with the freeze ray once and that's it
Gru’s minions or at least most most of them went with his brother to do supervillain stuff in the third movie, but then why couldn’t Gru just call up his brother and ask for help, I’m sure his brother would understand.
@@RedK57265 could've actually helped if Maxime teamed up with Dru and his minions, making so that he has an army of minions as well as the coachroaches on his side, actually giving a legit reason why Gru needed to go into witness protection. It could also make the forgetable brother actually have a purpose
I guess because the villain wants to turn the baby into a human-roach hybrid, I guess the organization Gru and Lucy work for draw the line at babies.
7:07 remember kids don’t blackmail your parents, but if it’s your neighbors it’s perfectly fine.
My first thought: oh, this movie came out?

Add Gru jr. to the list of cartoon babies that writers will refuse to age up(Maggie, Stewie, Poof, etc)
I may not have watched despicable me 4 yet but I would have loved it if Margo, Agnes, and Edith were the villains in describable me 4 of maybe using the zodiac stone ore maybe despicable me 4 should have been about a young version of dru and what happened to dru father before fry met gru in despicable me 4 though.!
Gotta get some of that boss baby moolah! (gag)
Maggie is so stunted in growth that even non canon future timeline stories milk the joke of her regressing to her baby form. Eg one future timeline story sees Maggie pregnant and receiving an ultrasound from a robot doctor in her adult life on a break from her rockstar tour. There is a funny joke that one of her 3 male band mates slept with her and impregnated her but none want to admit it. To excuse Maggie once again not talking, they say the umbilical cord is like a microphone during pregnancy and she shouldn’t talk for now. Then to hammer in the gag that the writers can’t stop reminding us that Maggie never escapes her baby days, she’s later has a pacifier in her mouth from Dr Hibbert to calm herself down from the baby’s contractions
Good news (Sorta), Puff grows up in the new Fairy Odd Parents show (Which I have heard is actually a good show) and appears as a young adult

Bit of a parallel there. My dad after watching this movie basically said, "It felt like they have a bunch of potential spin-offs they could use at the end."
Yeah, but I kinda liked that end more than I should've; it was dumb & goofy, but despite the fact that most of the villains that pop up - especially the ones from the Minions films - have barely any worth to me, seeing all of them kinda struck something in me. Maybe it's the fact that Minions was one of, if not the, 1st movie theatre film I saw or the legit sense of finality, or what, but I felt actual warmth - even if Dr. Nefario returning out of nowhere & Dru just getting sidelined at the very end as a silent/inaudible cameo just made me question stuff!
That, & Gru rubbing it in that he did steal from Frenchie in high school, & seeing Bratt & knowing that he's liking it bc ✨️80s✨️ was kinda funny, at least to me.

I really like poppy. One thing I hate about these movies is that most of the toys end up being the minions while brand new characters like poppy only get 1 little figurine 😢
If it's like the little figures they did for Lucy and Scarlet, I'll have one more for my collection.
I don’t know anyone that would buy one
I feel like she was such an accurate middle schooler-she wants to be bad, she wants loves pink and stuffies, like, she was great… but she was still a side plot, and I feel like she deserved something of her own, which is significantly less slandered (and, you know, less bad.)
It irks me that they didn't give the girls older designs. It would shown how far Gru has come with his family and also work along with the VAs getting older as well, the original one for Agnes got completely replaced for a younger actress because of it. It didn't have to be a decade gap, but a little progression would have been nice to see.
Fr, also, 4's Agnes was kinda annoying vocally; nothing against whoever voiced her, but she sounded too pitchy & whinny at times. Also, kinda unrelated, but Edith is the only gorl left that I care about; Anges is just the young & sweet one & Margo has gotten the shaft so bad w/ getting boy trouble twice in a row & having barely touched upon school issues, whereas Edith is just a troublemaker & can be legit kinda funny!
In the 2nd movie & onwards, Margo's a smidge taller than she was in the 1st movie.

I feel like 2 should have built on that one scene where Gru tries to get the agency to arrest him claiming he is the true mastermind. It would have been funnier if he actually turned out to be right.
Despicable Me 4 feels like a bunch of TV show episodes strung together, with how nothing of substance happens or even matters. What’s more, is that the movie is incredibly short by consequence. By the time Gru Jr was being captured, I thought we were in the middle act, but no, IT WAS THE CLIMAX. What the heck??
This brings up a good point. Would this have worked better as a tv show? At least then each story could have its own episode and room to breath.
Lmao, I originally thought that Dru's villainy & Gru trying to best him as an agent during the credits of 3 was going to spawn a series in & of itself when I was younger 💀
@FurKid_the_Gg_roo_99 I had a similar thought, only that was going to be the plot to Despicable Me 4, and that Gru and Lucy taking him on would be the main source of drama/comedy in the film.
In fact, even when trailers of the movie came out, I thought there was gonna be this reveal where Dru became an agent of the AVL who sold Maxime out to the agency in exchange for less jail time/his brother's safety (which also explains why the Minions just didn't work for Dru anymore?)

Wait so are you saying Despicable Me 5 will be...?
I mean there is a Toy Story 5 and Kung Fu Panda 5 is rumored to be in development so...
I've known this series was going to crash and burn the moment they gave Gru a love interest in the second movie. I like Lucy and their dynamic, but a narrative about a single dad is one you almost never get in kids films, and I feel like if the series had focused on him and the girls as they grew up, balancing good and evil, it would been way better than the 3 uninspired Nuclear Family Movies we got. I fully expect Despicable Me 5 to be about the family adopting an evil cat or something at this point.
Of course, the standard complaint that the series is ruined because a love interest is introduced. Seriously, girl, GROW UP.
If that weren't bad enough, throwing a love interest into the mix and having it work out immediately is even more unrealistic. Once you're single with kids, you will be rejected for having them. Lucy is... Fun, but Despicable Me could be a lot more interesting without her.

I feel like one of the main reason why the first one worked so much better is because the MC was an actual villain. Our protagonist was evil, which is so much more interesting. But ever since the second movie, Gru has been a good and morally acceptable person.
I think the second movie was still kinda fun, despite his character change.
Well, what do you expect is going to happen when your main character gives up villainy in the first film to become a family man?
@@hunterolaughlin That's why the first one was intially a standalone movie.
@@Mediados But it’s not and you have to accept it.
@@hunterolaughlin You're saying it like I said making more than one was a warcrime. That's no reason I can't point out critical points. I like the second movie a lot.
I think it’s funny how as the movies go on, the characters just become decorations with no goals or development of any kind. It’s pretty obvious they’ve run out of things to do with the girls and Lucy because they only time they use them is for a stupid joke
Compare to Shrek, where each film has some sizeable status quo change that shows they're willing to grow and evolve to tell stories about multiple stages of people's lives over time.
I'm still frusturated how a movie series called Despicable ME has only had the main character be despicable for one movie.
ɢʀᴜ ɪs ᗪᗴᔕᑭIᑕᗩᗷᒪᗴ
That irks me too
Seeing the girls as teenagers or adults would be so cool honestly. A story like that would have so much potential
I completely agree with on the Edith thing, she has SO MUCH POTENTIAL! Remember in movie 2 when she was going through a ninja phase. WHY NOT CONTINUE WITH THAT!?
Have her be an aspiring ninja/assassin as he gets older that would be awesome!
This. Edith got the most potential out of the girls, but she's always shafted with her plots.
Would've been interesting to see her taking a martial arts class in middle school if the gorls were allowed to grow up.
Yes, THIS. As my favorite of the three gorls, they should continue more of ninja Edith. She's awesome 😎
When I was younger I thought she'd want to be a super villain
I mean, it wouldn’t to age them up a couple years
Margo in high school, Edith in middle school and Agnes as an older elementary schooler
Maybe have the girls persue following their parents footsteps into being spies and being more active and actually participating in missions would be very compelling and would help develop their characters more
Margo being the brains, Edith being the Brawn, and Agnes being the support
Edith wanting to become a supervillain?
Bad idea
If it's simply she wants to learns technology from his father that's neat
My biggest gripe is that they can MAKE films because the first Despicable Me film was legitimately good. Unfortunately
the machine claims another
So was the second film.
When you were talking about that part about the girls never growing up, it made me think of the Despicable Me short 'Training Wheels' when Agnes gets that superpowered bike and chases down an Ice Cream Truck. I thought, 'Little miss takes after her parents.'
Personally, I don't even like how the simpson's ages are frozen in time, it makes it weird when they use do things that are particular of specific generations (WW2 grandpa, post-Vietnam baby boomer parents, rebel 90's kids, etc.) are now doing things of younger generations; which in turn forces them to change what their characters are.
Also, like with this film, we don't see them develop with age, they have to keep doing the same shtick over the years.
During my heyday with The Simpsons from the 2000’s, I remember collecting the playmates figures and open to accepting changes from Bart watching DVDs to Marge using a 2000’s cellphone but my interest started dropping towards the end of the decade.
In hindsight, guess the refusal to let it end on any high note and running on too long really sucked that chance away if they’re retconning their history to Homer and Marge hooking up into the 90’s for one
Are the Simpsons and everyone in Springfield vampires or something? Which is why they age so damn slow?
I've been saying to friends of mine that the Despicable Me movies after the second one just feel like a cartoon episode or TV special that have no idea what to do with the extra runtime
Which essentially is what the whole "franchise" is. NOBODY ASKED FOR THIS!
.....You don't know me, but my name's Dylan. I'm just the average RUclips commenter. But it seems like this, might be a worth a try. So i say..
Let them G R O O O O O W.
Just looking at the thumbnail, this is exactly the reaction I was hoping for from the viewing world for this. Illumination is running their own ideas into the ground for the sake of profit.
This franchise had its fun, but now I think it’s time for it to step aside.
Agreed.
Agreed
@williamthelonelywasp4842
WHATTT 😱😱😱
Agreed, it’ll be better if they age up. Like imagine if Antonio is unfrozen and taking his revenge on Gru by involving his daughters, especially Margo, no? Because El Macho having a son is just as useless if they don’t take advantage of the fact that he is the villain’s son
this really WAS a movie, that DID in fact come out
It truly was... Despicable Me 4
It was... released on July 3rd 2024
it was… released by illumination
DM4 is a movie that exists
It was... a movie in a franchise created by Illumination in 2010 with their box-office hit Despicable Me
"Emoji movie was more narratively compelling than this"
Oh crap. Has Hell frozen over?
ANY movie being less narratively compelling than Emoji Movie should NOT be universally possible.
I would honestly rather watch the emoji movie over any of the despicable me sequels
@@jskywalker58 I'll certainly agree after the first sequel
The "Illumination & DreamWorks are better than Disney" people have gone quiet since this came out.
BTW, what do you think of the South Park Panderverse special because Disney haters were using that to fuel their anti-Disney narrative, especially with the line "Put a chick in it and make her lame and gay" and to say that other companies are better than Disney because they aren't "woke" nor seemingly "giving in" to AI nor treating their artists like crap despite what happened with Across the Spider-Verse?
Tbh all of them currently have bad year when comes to animated movie considered there isn't a single animated movie that i considered love watching it again(2022 it was Puss in boots 2 and 2023 it was Nimona)
just wait for after Deadpool 3, potentially Aliens I think, and they'll go right back
Pseudo point
Not really, Mexican Iron Man hyped this up by uploading a review from his son.
Yes, I was totally baffled that they created a brand new character in Poppy playing a role that you'd think one of the daughters could play.
To me the most unrealistic part is Gru who can dodge and tank missiles point blank has to go into witness protection even after defeating 3 extremely popular and powerful villains in every other movie.
Right? I was confused for the most part
From just seeing the trailers, I'm really confused how the girls haven't seemed to age like at all. For the other movies, they could reasonably take place over a couple of weeks or months. But 4? Nine months plus maybe another six from the least? You would think they would have had the girls grow up a little or develop their character.
Edit: Just realized Cell talks about this in the video. Just logically (lmao logic in a Illumination movie), it doesn't make much sense if you can have a baby, but the girls stay the same. Like, why?!
I always assumed the second film took place over a year considering the film opens with Agnes celebrating her birthday and Margo getting into that pre-teen age where she's interested in boys. Everything after that seems to be a time-still.
I don’t mind the Simpsons “floating timeline” idea Illumination wants for Despicable Me, but the issue is getting the characters things to do that can be entertaining. In Minions & One More short “Training Wheels” is literal proof that they can give the girls a story that’s entertaining and prove that the girls and the minions can coexist in providing comedy. I don’t hate the movies (I genuinely like them), but I know the flaws are there and are fixable if Illumination just tried a bit more.
This is why I’m glad that Inside Out 2 is easily beating Despicable Me 4 at the Box Office as it’s a much better sequel that was actually worth the wait!
The girls in Despicable Me: Don't age at all in 14 years
The Overkills from Minions: Hardly aged a day in nearly 60 years
I feel like half of this movie was just “because”
Like the mega minions did literally nothing and they were marketed to death 😂
It’s funny how Kung Fu Panda and Despicable Me released their fourth installment this year and they were both extremely disappointing
And it's sad that both were disappointing (let's be honest, no one really expected this movie to be anything more than decent).
The 4th one was good but I respect your opinion
*And* both had covers of 10+ year old songs in their endings. Huh.
There were some scenes, such as the Karate class scene or the scenes with the hair salon lady that did not really add anything to the story and could've been cut.
Imagine saying the girls are not allowed to age but then introduce a baby.
Logic?
This film feels like a TV show season that was turned into a film
I think it's funny how the movie's main song simultaneously makes no sense with the movie's plot whatsoever and also implies a significantly more interesting plot that might have existed when the song was written. There is *a* scene where Gru kind of acts villainous (And even then, he's technically still helping the AVL). He's not living a double life where he has to balance something he doesn't want his family to learn about while keeping the appearance of a family man, he's the same guy his family already knew. The literal only way the song would make sense would be if it was written from the neighbor's perspective but that's so hyper specific. Maybe it was planned for Gru to either continue to get blackmailed throughout the entire movie or for whatever reason go back to villany while having to maintain his cover. The movie was probably going to be about something before the executives came in and said to include more "funnies" for the audience.
On a sidenote, the ending kind of makes me think this is the end of Despicable Me, or at least most of Gru's family. Obviously the Minions aren't going anywhere as long as they keep making money (So basically until the collapse of humanity) but I think Illumination will shift into an actual Minions show instead of just movies, sort of like how Megamind went. It's clear that's what they've wanted to do for a while with DM3 and SLOP 2 basically being a couple of episodes frankenstined into a movie and DM4 continues that style. It would probably be significantly more efficient and cost-effective and I'm sure Netflix would accept Illumination with open arms.
They should’ve had all the past villains team up against Gru and the minions (kinda like how Regular Show did in Exit 9B) cause it would actually justify the need for the Mega Minions being relevant and they could’ve had an endgame like climax where all the minions fight the past villains and Gru faces off against Vector one last time also they really should’ve had the girls age and becoming more distant as most Kids do when they’re older from Gru and Lucy while they try to bond with them more as Parents do when their children seemingly become more distant
Now that I think about it, making the girls grow up and making each movie showcasing them at a different point in their lives would be an EXCELLENT way to make the Despicable Me sequels have the same focus on family struggles as the first while still having the opportunity to tackle new conflicts.
I would respect this franchise WAY more if each movie actually changed the status quo in any significant way, but besides Lucy which I really like, that hasn't really happened at all.
Despicable Me 4 is just a hot mess, and all those "Despicable Me" movies? Nah, they're Trash.
"Disney Zootopia," though, now that's a true gem. It's got heart, character, and a damn good message. Disney really knocked it out of the park with that one.

I absolutely agree. Think about other animated characters that grew up like for example Riley (inside out), Astrid Hiccup and their friends (how to train your dragon) and etc
My problem was definitely the pacing, too many things that could have been expanded in a fun way so easily (Margo’s experience at school etc) I feel like it would have made a much better tv series, more time for side plots to actually GO somewhere.
Would they ever have made this a show?
Absolutely not.
Should they have?
Maybe

Question; when did the minions go back to Gru? Didn't they leave to join Dru?
The sad thing is the witness protection and having to have new identities is an interesting concept. They could have focused on that and the characters reactions. Maybe Lucy and Gru have different solutions for that. And the villain beeing a former classmate of Gru also could work. Maybe some of Grus past is unsettling or their could be parallels to Margots bullying..
But yeah that's dipical illumination to waist potential.
Maybe the Box office will be bad cause inside out 2 and they ll rethink there strategies..
Or just do a Poppy Spinoff. I think we would all be ok with this being the last "proper" Despicalble movie. It was cute, made money, spawned the ticktacks from hell, but let it go.
I haven’t seen this movie yet, but this franchise needs to die already. It’s turning into Illumination’s “Ice Age”. The only good movies in the “Despicable Me” franchise are the first two.

Their movies may be mediocre but let’s be honest, their animation is GORGEOUS.
If you paired up an animation team from Illumination, with a writing team from Cartoon Saloon, you would get an Illumination movie that eclipses the original Despicable me into near irrelevancy by comparison
their soundtracks are even better
True
Nobody ever said Illumination was bad at animation. Their writing is always the questionable part, but their animation is among the best we have.
Eeyup, this franchise is now Cocomelon. Yaaaaaay. Ugh, I feel so bad for the girls, with every movie they get less and less to do.
Would it better if there was a Despicable Me TV show so that we can fully explore each of these properly?
I Still Wanna That Movie could be Turn into a Series
No
I would watch it, it would be a success. When I think about despicable me, I think about Gru and his family and minor the minions but they can still help with something (but still what should be focused on despicable me franchise are gru family from Gru to Gru jr)
You know who else doesn't age up at all? The villains from the Minions movies at the end. That part reeked of laziness and asset reuse.
They have very slight wrinkles and grey hair, not much
Atleast they didn't just reuse the same models without the grey hair.
*The reason why Margo, Edith and sweet little Agnes are not growing up, it’s because of Gru. "What? What did Gru do?" Well at DM2, Gru is telling them good night then you can here "Goodnight, Agnes. Never get older". And at DM3 when Dru sees the girls for the first time, Dru says "mmm… 15" and then Gru says "She always be 12". And at DM4, look closely at the girls, they are not growing up at all it’s because of Gru. There it is, This is why the girls are not growing up.*
It really just kept.. going.. and.. going for a movie that is only an hour and a half. And somehow the ending song/scenes only sort of makes it worth it?
"Suppository"
I feel like the only way we'll see the characters age up is when this franchise REALLY runs out of steam and falls into a desperate need to bring something new to the table
Seems like this whole movie would’ve been better as serialized RUclips shorts.

Given Migration being a solid 7/10, I guess you could say expectations were raised?
@@thirdcoinedgewon't lie 5ho, feel like illumination doesn't put much effort movies cause... Rise of gru was really good, I was expecting this movie to do the same but nope
The only reason I want to see this movie is because I heard there was a spiderman 2 reference 😭
I liked this movie but there’s some problems. There should be more Villain and Mega Minion senses. I would have gotten rid of the karate and grocery scenes and replaced it with Maxime going to AVL to find the information on Grus location but he has to fight the Mega Minions to get in and when he beats them and gets into Ramsbottom office, he will turn Ramsbottom into a cockroach since he deleted all of the information on Grus whereabouts but that’s when the principal will call Maxime to tell him where Gru is. This would have made Maxime more of threatening Villain and it would shown more of the mega minions.
Should’ve ended after the second movie
5:30 I think the writers did a great job introducing the girls but they wrote themself into a corner by making a second movie. The girls were introduced as a plot device to show how desperate Gru is and how bad Vector is, Gru is desperate to show the world he can steal the moon but when his shrink ray got stolen he is willing to use the girls to get it back. He is not really caring for them even calling their book boring. Vektor then stealing the girls after Gru started caring and making Gru angry in the process to the point were Gru is willing to fight against great odds for the girls. Is showing that he as a person developed beyond his villiany for the girls, all while showing that Vektor is willing to kidnao girls to get his will, paints Gru in a way to show that he is better than that. The forst movie wrapped up everything, Gro grow up as a person and the girls found a home. Then the second movie came out, the girls didnt serve no plot anymore and only had to be there, to not invalidate the first movie ending.
