    - Reiterating my complaints are not about changes, this is about its own story being told poorly IMO.
    - My Bumi rant may be a TAD overdramatic.

One point my Mom brought up when I told her that they said that they removed Sokka's sexism is this. And I am paraphrasing.
"His sexism is what kicks the show off. If he is not being sexist towards his sister, then she would not get so pissed that she splits a glacier and brings Aang to the surface."
    And she is right.
To me the forth episode is less about him being sexist, and more about him and Aang being humbled, and not being jerks, and show offs. Especially towards girls, but in general.
And being humble is one of the main themes of the show.

When u look at the set up in the netflix show, it looks pretty bad. In the OG we have this glacier and under it Aang and after KAtara's outburst, Aang surface and KAtara had to broke it. This set up, some reviewer said why didnt Aang broke out of it earlier. SO in the OG doesnt make sense. But in here yeah we can ask that question. Cuz Aang's thing isnot buried under the iceberg or whatever so it is out in the open. So no one went there in a 100 years? Those water tribe huntinh fish near it. If Zuko searche properly then he coulve find it. Yeah it is between bla bla I can let it slide. Worse part is after that. Whe KAtara tries to bring kanoe back the glacier breaks itself not KAtara's doing. At that scene Katara focused on the kanoe. So If that thing can break itself then why didnt make it so that after everything calmed? I asked this in this adaptation. In the OG it implied that u have to break it outside.

He was sexist because he was trying to be a good leader for his tribe because being a strong man was how he thought the village would be protected! not to mention it plays into his early characterisation by the fact he WASN'T strong. Zuko BEATS him EXTREMELY EASILY in Sokka's first attempt at fighting an actual opponent. it's notjsut a comedy bit becausse you're made to think sokka'll be badass after the big pomp and circumstance of him redying for battle to the slaptstick of how quickly and easily he's beaten (as well as a way to show zuko's a threat) but also underlies the point that Sokka's strength at that point wasn't fighting.

Bumi and Kyoshi being all mad at Aang makes no narrative sense because in the very first episode, we see that Aang was _going back._ Kyoshi is his past life, she would've seen that because it's been proven in canon that the past lives are like backseat drivers to the current life. Roku appearing to Aang in the Awakening and comforting him in the storm implies this. He saw what happened at Ba Sing Se and went to help his younger incarnation. Kyoshi had no right to get in Aang's face like she did and not to mention the fact that they went with the fandom's perception of Kyoshi has me steamed. That is NOT Avatar Kyoshi.

Bumi never makes sense. Lets look at his POV. Lets say Bumi learned the genocide like 1 year later. at that time Aang is 13 yo. So what is he gonna do in that situation? A 13 yo child, yeah mastered the air bending but not anything else right. So if he was there, he is dead no way around it. But now you r seeing your friend alive and still look like 12 yo. So first thing he should ask is what happened, how did u survive and escaped. Why r u still looking like 12 yo, why didnt u change? Right. Instead of blaming him, first u gotta now the circumstances, then u can do that blaming. No matter how much u changed, your first reaction should be learning the situation. He should have a long conversation about it. Also how is Aang recognize him? Wouldny u be sceptical at first like he mustve been dead or something like that?
Kyoshi I dont understand her as well.
Also why not kill him if u r that unsatisfied with Aang? Just let next avatar in the water tribe and he/she can master earth, fire and water and fight Ozai. In this adaptation, even Zuko almost defeated him LOL. So he is not that much of a thread to u. When Zuko becomes a good guy just let him do it if Zuko wants the throne that much.
Those small changes make the story much worse and in the later seasons it will make it much much worse or we are gonna forget about that changes LOL.

Sokka’s sexism always seemed like a front to hide his insecurities. His father left him with the tribe because he wasn’t a man. He leads a cadre of _children_ to fortify the village against attack. His sister is the most special person in the tribe.
His sexism is dealt with pretty quickly, but the underlying insecurity remains for quite a while. It’s a facet of his character and it shows his growth.

Yup! The shot where he gets on his knees in humility in front of Piandao mirrors the shot where he gets on his knees and asks Suki to train him, it highlights his growth. It's also a part of the worldbuilding, not just in terms of the water tribe having sexist traditions but Sokka's willingness to learn and shift his perspective showcases his adaptability. So that in book 2, when Iroh tells us (and Zuko) that Water is the element of change, we as the audience can go back and see that demonstrated with the water tribe characters we have. The show majorly broke two rules when making a story. One was they did tell over show. Two was when making a rewrite, there's one fundamental rule you have to abide by. Change one thing and that WILL have a ripple effect for another scene and characters down the line. Change how that scene goes and now you have to tweak this other character, etc etc. Basically, they had to ask "how will this change effect things down the line?" and they didn't. They just *_didn't._* It shows in how they first introduce Avatar Aang by flying around the Air Temple.
That is already going to cause huge problems in the writing for later and it did in just season 1 alone; "why need the glider to escape or travel around if he can just use Airbending to fly?" The fact that the fandom is entirely divided on the flying thing, shows how bad of an idea that was because your questions shouldn't be divisive or confusing, they should be able to be answered, then those answers should setup more questions. That's good writing, that keeps your audience intrigued enough to keep them engaged. The original did this gorgeously with just about every world building they introduced. Characters were fascinating even though they appeared once or here and there.
Speaking of introducing characters...By introducing Aang right from the beginning, they also remove a lot of that intrigue that was setup perfectly in the original; "who is this kid, what's up with the arrow tattoos, why are they glowing, what's that mass behind him, what's he doing here etc etc?" Aang's introduction caused a ripple effect he wasn't even aware of and we weren't even aware of until another rewatch. They even did fun hints as to who he is when Iroh puts down the air symbol tile in his little game, the wind suddenly kicked up. "That was weird what's up with that? Ohhh he's an AIRBENDER that's cool."
The remake doesn't justify itself existing. And when people go "well you shouldn't be comparing it to the original" it literally would not exist, without the original also existing. It exists solely because of it. It is trying to prove it has a reason to be around, and in how it executed its storytelling, it only served to prove how vastly superior the animation was.
And don't even get me started on how this show wrote its female characters. In trying to be less sexist, it somehow ended up being more sexist. Talk about ironic.

THis can have a positive effect, as she's the one to try and get aang to save the world in the first place and leads to her taking down the sexist beliefs of the water tribe, and it also has bad effects lie the time she stole from some pirates which instigated an avoidable fight and can also lead to her being needlessly confrontational and preachy about things that aren't her business.

3:53 This is honestly what makes Avatar so good. The viewer at first thinks this is just some kids' show where no one dies, but then you reach the air temple and realize that the show can and will get serious. It's a total shock, but in a good way. It changes your expectations but also makes you realize just how much Aang messed up by leaving and also makes you feel bad because a 12-year-old just discovered the charred corpse of his one and only best friend, coming to the realization that his entire race has been murdered. It's crazy that this aired on Nickelodeon.

some say they didn't show death outright cause of guidelines, but it worked in the shows favour eveen if that was the only reasons. it meant the serious moments had more weight when they came along rather than be drowned out by the viewer growing numb if they were frequent, and the moments when death is a plot factor can eb told in more creative and powerful ways like when Aang realises he IS the last airbender and that everyone he loved not only died but died a CENTURY ago and has a breakdown.
of course it also leads to stuff lie some viewers being confused as to whether or not Jet died later in Book 2 so there's pros and cons to everything.

The reason why this show was so relatable and accessible to people of all ages is because the characters were allowed to be imperfect. Sokka was funny and good at creative solutions, but he was also sexist and lacked confidence, things he had to overcome over his arc. Katara was empathetic and responsible, but she was also stubborn and angry and a little controlling at times, and those were things she had to work on, things that tripped her up at times. Aang was charismatic, kindhearted and gentle, but he was also a scared kid, who goofed off too much and sometimes ran away when things got too serious. No one wants a hero who has all the answers and knows exactly how they feel all the time, it's not compelling. Even though they did a better job with Zuko than the others, I still think they showed too much of Zuko's good side too soon, and it will make the payoff less impactful when he switches sides later. In the original, Zuko had his good moments in season 1, little hints to both the audience and the other characters that there was more to him than the angry fire nation prince, but he was unquestionably the villain in season 1. He burned down Kyoshi village, not Zhao, he tied Katara to a tree, he grabbed Gran-Gran by the scruff of the neck, he kidnapped Aang while he was in a defenseless meditative state at the North Pole, and he was just so much more rude and nasty to everyone, especially Iroh. The fact that he was so annoying in season 1 made the humbling and subsequent growth of his character in the second and third seasons mean so much more. I think the Netflix show treated Zuko's character a bit like "See this one here! Pay attention to him, because he will turn out to be good later!" They emphasized his victimhood too much. In season 1, the audience is meant to understand some of why Zuko is the way his is, but not to excuse him.

Katara receiving the waterbending scroll from her grangran was in concept a good idea. I was never particularly a fan of the pirate episode so I didn’t mind cutting it out for the extra time. But then instead of katara having a moment to truly grasp what she had just been given, she just finds it in her bag, there’s a little voice over and thats it! Avatar could do with a live action version. There are elements of the show that could be explored in more detail that would be way too much for a cartoon, at least one airing in any TV network. Avatar did a lot but it often left the worst to subtext. If you want to make a mature avatar adaptation, don't take a story in part made good by the contrast between maturity and immaturity, make a show about the 100 years war. Make a movie about the seige on ba sing sei.
But no, just keep remaking the same story that was already done insanely well but more edgy.
Not to say you couldn't do this as an animated version on say Netflix, but the purpose of a live action adaptation is to grab in a new audience. You can grab in a new audience without ruining the original series.

I haven’t yet seen the show. I started it, but the AIR NOMAD GENOCIDE, what should have been the most dramatic and emotional moment, BORED me. That, I, I don’t even have words for that. When everyone got killed, I had zero emotional attachment to any of them. Or better understanding of their culture. Aang’s actor is amazing, honestly, he was the only good part of it, but there is only so much he can do with exposition. Everything else…
I think starting at the genocide could have worked, most who watch this already know what will happen from the original, they could still have had Aang be in denial. But they should have spent less time on air tricks and more on his friends and what being the avatar had changed, and his mentor comforting him, to build up to the whole gyatso will get taken away and he runs. With gyatso (btw no idea how spelled) finding the note when he looks for Aang when the fire nation attacks. Even endearing us to some of the children would make a super emotional scene when they are (implied) killed. Also, they really should have made that gyatso forbidden air suck technique everyone speculated about when his skeleton was found surrounded by fire benders.

In the game of thrones early the best seasons, we never see the battles and it left to our imagination but what made it better is the writing. Showing the genocide isnt make u for mature audiences, that is the most important thing those writers should understand. Monk Gyatso surronded by fire nation soldier, looks lke he is the old wise and badass one also. In here we never see his badass side, well he just throw some soldiers not much else but in the cartoon he was surronded by a lot of fire nation soldiers. So this approach makes it look more like edgey than mature I say.

You can say that Sokka's sexism wasn't important because it only lasts 4 episodes, but be ffr, there are arcs that are shorter but also affect the plot heavily. The problem isn't the numerical value, it's the artistic value. Removing an element of growth removes the ability to grow? Especially with nothing to replace it. This ultimately effects the whole show because this not only shows that he's willing to learn and change, but also it effects his relationships with so many other people! He had to learn, so he could show how to do and be better? A character arc can be 3 words and be efficient, it's just a matter of impact.

I feel like all screenwriters should be required to take acting classes. In Acting 1 you learn that a script is not just the words written, but the subtext you bring to those words, and how that subtext affects your physicality. When you just preform the script as words (even if you infuse them with subtext), it's called a "talking head" scene. Those are boring and bad. But of course sometimes you must talk ad nauseum in a scene. And in those cases it becomes crucial to remember that stage directions are just as much chances to display subtext as the lines written around them are. Neither can be forgotten if you want a good product.
As a personal example of this:
An acting partner and I had an assignment to add blocking to a script that lacked stage directions. We chose to have our characters (estranged siblings) fold laundry while trying to keep from arguing. We folded in such different ways that it showed our characters' lack of common ground. At one point, my character gives into vindictiveness, so I started refolding my partner's already-folded laundry, indicating that I perceived her as wrong and myself as the one with the solutions. It culminated in the argument finally breaking through and her winning it by dropping an unarguable truth (a scripted line) at the same time as knocking over my perfectly folded stack of clothes (our added blocking), leaving me speechless at her words and actions, clearly having lost both the argument and my self-imposed stability.
If we'd just been siblings intensely bickering on a couch, we would have spoken the same lines of dialogue, but the scene would have said so much less about the story.
THIS WAS AN ACTING 1 CLASS!

I definitely have some problems with it but overall it was a really good and fun show. I’ve only seen the first episode of the live action show so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but the live action version is so fucking boring. All of the characters feel like they got all of their personality sucked out of them. The original show was always fun and entertaining, but this remake is never that. I already know there’s gonna be a ton of people that tell me to keep watching the live action show because it gets better, but why would I watch a worse version of avatar when I can just watch the superior animated version

I just watched the first episode and personally didn't dislike it, but it didn't make me excited to see more. But you said something that resonated with how I've been feeling for a while: People are enjoying it.
It's weird but we live in an era where everything has to be "the greatest thing ever" or "this is the worst thing ever" and a lot of stuff that is "good enough" ends up forgotten because it doesn't get enough attention. Things that are just good enough should be allowed to exist and talked about, there should be more experimentation in media, the next cultural hit might be hiding somewhere out there and no one knows about it because big media companies aren't giving them a chance.
Be it in shows, movies or games, we see less and less risks being taken and more often than not the things that are being marketed to us are being received with so much indifference, companies are so out of touch and even things that are familiar that used to be safe bets are not guaranteed to make a profit.
I don't know how to elaborate this properly but I've been feeling frustrated about this topic for a while, I hope whoever reads this understands what I mean.

I see what you’re saying. I get that too.
The internet is just all about extremes.
It’s either “peak fiction” or “trash”, nothing is ever “good, but could be improved”
And that’s the thing, if a project has a few rough edges at the start, it shouldn’t be cast in the trash bin in terms of reception.
If the creators are smart, they’ll take that criticism, and try to apply more of what people liked in the future after the waters are tested. But that won’t happen if every project is immediately deemed “trash” by people on social media after just a first impression.
I feel almost every project should have at least 2 seasons.
One to put out there and see how it’s received, and another to have a second chance and tweak what didn’t work for people. If the majority of people still aren’t receptive after that second chance, then I feel they can do whatever they want with the project, throw it away, try again, idk.
But at least it was given a fair shake and not immediately squander the potential because some random users on socials call it trash.

Like if anything, if they at least had more elaborate sets I could somewhat forgive it, but seeing how much CGI they use for that on top of Appa and Momo and all of the bending effects...this is already like 2/3s of the way to being fully animated anyway. I've only watched clips myself, and have no desire to watch the full thing. The biggest sin was they showed Gyatso vs Sozin but then didn’t show Gyatso sucking all the air out of the room (move that we all know he did) killing everyone including himself to save other airbenders… no he instead was directly protecting the children so doing that move would have killed the children as well… and Sozin I guess but there are ways of letting Sozin still win without ruining the surprise.
    Like for example:
Gyatso realizing there is little hope tells the others to keep going and escape while he holds the firebenders off. He gets their attention causing more firebenders to get close to him, then he bends the air out of the room, the low pressure he is causing brings a rush of air towards him trapping any firebenders closer to him, sealing their fate. Sozin is just far enough away that he is able to hold himself back, his soldiers before him are goners and Gyatso too will fall, but he grows impatient. Struggling to take a deep breath, Sozin conjures lightning and just as he focuses on a face turning blue Gyatso: (crash) Lightning strikes the ocean as we see Aang and Appa struggling to fight off the storm. As Aang falls into the water we cut back to the air temple, its not clear whether Sozin or Gyatso won, or if any airbenders escaped, but what is clear is the Southern Air Temple has fallen. We cut back to Aang, and he freezes himself in ice. When they visit the air temple 100 years later we find out what happened, allowing for an emotional realization.

They made the main characters all stoic and bland by taking away a lot of their prime/engaging traits (Aang’s fun-loving nature, Katara’s headstrong nature, Sokka’s sarcasm).
    So. Much. Exposition!
The plot feels so nonlinear and jumbled due to all the story cramming and a lot of the lighthearted/human moments are gone, replaced by exposition dumps and/or stoic, emotionless acting.

My largest pet peeve with the series is actually the midseason finale.
The midseason finale sets up a lot of things that don't get resolved, ignores a lot of continuity, and then also adds a ton of things that aren't exactly necessary and don't make sense to add in the first place.
In the animated show, the midseason finale was specifically about the comet as well as other timely information. The writers have already told us that they removed the comet as well as timely occurrences to prevent the show from progressing too fast (this also prevents Aang from having any kind of motivation which they clearly struggle to work with but I digress).
In the LA, this means that essentially they had to rewrite the entire plot for the midseason finale OR cut out Avatar Roku entirely. And like you said, if they're going to change something they need to do it well.
They didn't do it well. Why is Koh there? Why the owl? Why Yue? The forest guardian doesn't get resolved. Roku's dragon is no longer relevant. Were these necessary changes or just ways to bloat a plot they didn't know how to fill?

The character arc of Sokka's sexism might've been over by episode 4 but the way that arc affected his overall arc of becoming the leader of the Gaang continues WELL past that. Even after Suki proves him wrong and teaches him to respect women as complex people like any other, he still goes through issues with his self worth and trying to prove himself as a competent warrior and a good leader, something that his shallow views of the roles men and women play is a direct result of. His explicit sexism might've been over in the beginning, but that was just the start of his actual full circle character arc that goes on for the entire series. Removing that from Sokka's character gives him no real starting point. OG Sokka had a start to finish. Netflix Sokka is just kinda floating around aimlessly waiting for someone to tell him how smart and awesome and cool he is cause his poorly characterized father was a little mean to him.

Really upsets me that so many people seem to miss that Sokka didnt stop being sexist after ep4. He was humbled in ep4. He still had to work on it through out the series.

Reboots/remakes like these are always so bizarre. Because the writers somehow managed to misinterpret and forget the source material AND their own work simultaneously. It takes talent to be that incompetent.

You're one of the oldest subscriptions I have had on RUclips. Been watching for years. This is because you agree with me on everything. You always say my opinion on something. For the first time ever we have different opinions. It's bizarre. I still appreciate the video for what it is. However, I don't like being belittled for liking the show. I am a fan of the original show. Have been for years. And I liked it. And it's not just "oh, pretty CGI LIKE LIKE LIKE," Shockingly enough I liked it for it is. We don't need to devalue people's opinions as something trivial because it's not the internet approved consensus. I have my problems with it like the complete lack of Aang water bending, but I actually did like characterization and story as a fan of the original. Shocking, I know

Some shows work better in animation and some work better in live action but this definitely falls in the former and didn’t need to be touched
