This is the funnest session yet. Your impressions of the speakers were spot on. Inflection is a hard thing to change if you're use to speaking a certain way. But I'll remember next time, not to end my sentences on an up note...........lol
OMG! Totally on board with your observation on ending on a high note. It’s something that has become fashionable, so many people that didn’t use to use up notes, have begun using this intonation style. IT IS IRRITATING!
When I was growing up professionally my line managers were actually asking me to be monotone, don't gesticulate during my presentations to client. I then soon realise that they were suggesting me that for hindering my skills and making me look too junior for future projects. Be ware of people trying to sabotage your skills!
I think it's unintentional, there was a corporate training communication thing going on for a long time that was trying to uniformly mold executives into robots, same hair, same suits, same flat tone of voice and NO HAND GESTURES. For me with a Mediterranean heritage it was incredibly hard to time down, and it seemed kinda "off", we use our hands for expressing ourselves and we stalk a lot, we talk fast, we have melody. Heaven forbid an executive might actually let his or her ethnic heritage show during a corporate meeting 😂😂😂😂 basically racist BS.
What a sleazy culture! I'm sorry you had to deal with that kind of treachery. I was blessed with supportive mentors, back in the day. I thiink I'll call and thank them!
@@patriciaoffer9585 I don't think that it was intentional. When I was younger, I was frequently told to lower my tone and volume. By telling someone whose voice and tone change, telling them to be monotone will calm them down. I was told that when you end a sentence on a higher note indicates a question.
Dan, I am reading this book thinking fast and slow. It talks about to types of thinking that happens in our mind. After watching your videos its clear whether consciously or unconsciously what you teach is what's mentioned in the book. You can draw lines between what you teach and what's mentioned in the book. You are an intelligent person Dan thank you for everything that you are sharing consistently even in these tiring times. Plus Dude, looking fly in that thumbnail man. Suited up. Stay safe.
I’m so relieved to hear you confirm that those people who end a sentence on a high note sound untrustworthy. I’ve always hated listening to anyone speak who ends their sentences that way! It’s so annoying & sounds ridiculous that the listener perceives the speaker as an idiot. Totally agree with all you say in this video- absolutely spot on advice!! Thank you.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! you got me rolling on the floor!!! I can't figure out if I'm listening to a comedian or a language coach! thank you ever so much for the laughs and great help. GB!!!

How do you feel when you eat eggs? My ears get red like that when I do is why I ask. If they feel warm you might try eliminating them for 2 weeks and reintroduce to see if it is actually that. I hope not but it really helped me to take them out for awhile to calm down my immune system. Someone told me once and I looked into it.
Being assertive is very challenging for me. Not sure how that came to be. Whether it was childhood relationships or something else. There are children more assertive than I am and its terrible.
You can work on being assertive. You can study and then apply what you learn. If you feel you are being trampled on, you can do something about it, but it will take a little work. Go to danoconnortraining.com and check out "Step out of the Shadows and Speak" in the shop.
So true. Different species feel safer with the back of the hand as homo sapiens can’t hold anything (like a spear) with the back of one’s hand. I do blank out in my melody. I’m working on shorter direct sentences. I did record and save the presentation I gave. Holy poo poo. lol. So insecure. Where the heck is the power note. So thankful that my boss has my back. Many of my staff have my back. I back them up in turn. Pier note. Down notes. Happy beginnings. Happy endings. Will practice more videos. Do Appreciate your critique. Thank you Dan!!
Thanks for this Dan... I don't know where I found this term but I call that high note ending 'valley girl' type of speech: "High Speak"... I hate high speak... As a Gen X'er, I thought it was a generational thing, this high speak way of talking... But for the Doctor, who is also a gen x'r to speak in this fashion has me thinking this is a coastal phenomena
Topic suggestion: Women tend to speak with a question mark after they say something even when they are not asking. It ruins credibility. It is a bad habit that women should train themselves NOT to do. Thank you.
Unfortunately, this upcoming generation of professionals have taken on that affectation of ending on the high note. Even when they know what they’re talking about. They need to hear this!!! It’s funny unless you’re leading a meeting at work. Then not so much.
Nothing wrong with you. You are smart enough to realize that they are all blowing smoke up our butts because they don't have a clue. Just a few of them practiced their speeches in the mirror longer.
Me either.or neither. (I said that in a low tone) 🤣. This is so interesting though because it's made me aware that I end conversations in a more upward note. I see it leaves me wide open to being invaded by further comment when I am giving direction - so the open ending makes me perhaps look either less authentic or fearful about what I am delivering. It has given me insight that it energetically creates a space where people will continue to interrupt also (like an upward note makes the statement look either incomplete/unfinished or that I am open to critique (when I'm simply given a direct instruction (in teaching)
I think those people just have different styles. I do think that occasionally using a hand gesture can help emphasize certain points. However, for example Cuomo, I was watching at the beginning of the crisis and distinctly remember thinking that New York was really not doing anything. He is turning a lot of that around now and blaming others when really he just dropped the ball and was slow to respond. Then instead of fixing it, he spent some time pointing fingers, it really left a bad impression on me. It doesn't matter if you are an effective communicator, trust comes from actions.
I’m SO GLAD I found you!!!!! Thank you for posting free content that will help people, like me, that are trying to level up their communication skills! I really, really appreciate it! 👐🏼SUBSCRIBE 👐🏼
I remember as a kid people on TV did not use their hands, they were trained not to. I'm thinking of newscasters and some others. Generally I find it very distracting, especially if what their hands are doing has nothing to do with what they're saying. It is very pretentious to see just about everybody on TV doing the same gestures (for instance on Ted Talks). Speaking in the same cadence, in the same tone, moving their body in the same way and using similar hand gestures is just boring and insincere. If it is done well in a way that makes sense it is fine and I appreciate it. But if it is overdone, over-the-top and poorly done it is not appreciated.
I enjoy your lessons however, I don't believe any bought and paid for official, not one of them is honest, they are all following an agenda of people higher in station than themselves so they are all one's for me.
