Thanks again Dave...I just did the update on my 60D...I just followed the steps you did for your T2i...was about the same, now I am running 1.1.0 thanks so much for your help!
Dave, Thank you for the step by step video. I would have been able to figure it out through reading but actually watching someone else go through the process takes away some of the "brick anxiety"! My update was successful!
Cheers for this, Dave. I think I speak for a lot of your viewers when I say that all of your videos are extremely helpful to those who are starting out, or just want to find the answer (or a little confidence) from those who are experiencing/have experienced the topics that you cover. Santa Claus will be delivering my 550d later this month, at which point my video production will begin (and go into overdrive!) Very many thanks, fella!
Thanks so much, I spent ssooo long trying to find a clear guide to this, I successfully downgraded my canon firmware to 1.0.1 so I can use magic lantern all with your help!!
Thank you thank you!! i had struggled to follow the somewhat confusing directions that Canon gave. I didn't realize they were giving multiple ways to update, so I was mis-mashing the different steps together.
My heart sank for a split second because my comp screen when black for a moment just as you started the update. The screen came back up and the update went fine, good job. I might wait for awhile to see if any issue's come from the update. Kinda like "If it's not broke, don't fix it".
Hello. The site is broken. Do you have any alternative links for the update file? Or can you send me the update via email? I really need the update file. Thank you!
@FilmmakerMichael Go to the link he provided in the description, and select your specific firmware. It will tell you on the Canon site. For example, on the T2i it "Fixes a phenomenon in which tone jumps become noticeable in some images, depending on the shooting scene, when shooting with the Auto Lighting Optimizer settings (Low / Standard / Strong)."
today i talked about it with a friend and now you uploaded this Vid... great job man! :-D Your Channel is one of my most usefull subscriptions ;-) Sry for my bad english xD Greets from Germany
Thank you - nice to see how the process works. But is it possible you can please update the link to the firmware. As Canon now do not show any firmware updates on that page. thanks so much.
hey my canon t2i doesnt have this option? in the menu display i can go as far as the 2nd wrench where you have the option to adjust the lcd brightness? any reason you think why this is happening?? i cant see my firmware...
It must be because you are shooting with high ISO, or if you are using a high quality image format, the card might not be fast enough when saving. Try using Sandisk Extreme series. They are really good (personal opinion) and you can get one with 8 gb in an affordable prize.
I got a .exe file only and not the .fir file you had. I recognize the weird looking blue icon of the .exe file on your desktop but you used some .fir file I didn't have. Any idea what's wrong?
Hi Dave, what type of camcorder did you use to record this tutorial? The picture quality isn't too shabby on your camcorder either...hoping you could advise me on a Canon camcorder that I can use as my B footage since I will be doing weddings and other events where I need continuous footage
Hi, can I ask you a question please? I bought a small 2gb card for my 450D and after I take a shot - that word "Busy" is on the screen for about 5 second and it doesn't let me do anything. It's hell sometimes to wait this long and sometimes even longer. Could it be that it's just my card that is slow on reading the data?
@cat325ccr When placing the firmware file in the root directory, not DCIM or MISC, the camera will not recognize that there is a new file there. Have you run into similar issues and how did you get around them?
Hi my friend. How are you? O.k Plase, excuse me for the wrong inglesh. I don´t speak it. I´m from Cali. Colombia. I have a problem about Rebel t2i "update" firmware (from 1.0.8 to 1.0.9) I downladed the folder from de canon page. The question is..when I unzip the file what I should appear? Moving on, you have an email where you can write and send a photo of the file that I get? Thanks...
Good tutorial, but I need a lil help here :/ I have a canon t2i, I see there's an icon on the screen blinking which says 'Exp.sim' it's making the preview darker and the images too, I can't focus on things, how do I desable it ?? Please help :(
Hey Dave. I already have 1.0.9. firmware on my 550D despite i didn't upgrade it. So can I now just install Magic Lattern on it, or should I upgrade firmware anyway?
You're very knowlegable. Thanks for posting. Do you shoot sports much? I shoot Friday night games and as most do, I have trouble with lighting. I'm using a Cannon RebelXS and a 28-300 lense. I have a flash but that doesn't do much good when your trying to get good action shots. Any suggestions? Thanks!
guys, for some reason i cant see the firmware version.. i bought it second hand. is it possible that i cant see it because it already is the latest version?
Thanks for this!! I have been so scared to update my 550d, but will be doing it tonight! How long was the entire process once you started the update on the camera?
hi dave .. i have a problem T_T i Download the Update firmware for my canon 1100D and i extract it on my PC .. when i copy the FIR file and paste to my SD .. error Box pop out .. what is the problem on that ? any settings to my camera or Setting to my PC that i need to change ? Have you ever had any problems with the transcend cards, i mean they are crazy cheap, i have had my transcend 16gb for a few weeks and its very fast and very good, but has yours ever failed on you, or deleted stuff or just stopped working, because I'm planning to do some paid video work and I want to know if I can trust them. thank you :)
Hi, I had a problem updating. When I tried to start the firmware update and clicked on the current firmware version (1.0.8), it didn't ask for update but said "Memory card containing firmware is required to update" and by pressing OK (only choice) I was back in the menu. What am I supposed to do with my SanDisk Extreme 16GB card so that it will work? H E L P ! ! !
man, i have the same fear of turning my t2i into an expensive paper weight. could you tell me how long it take to the update bar go from 0 to 100%. thanks
10 years later and this tutorial is still the most helpful guide I could find on this subject.
11 years*
Thanks!

@SKarsteinX that is true but I do use the lighting optimizer.
Thanks so much, I spent ssooo long trying to find a clear guide to this, I successfully downgraded my canon firmware to 1.0.1 so I can use magic lantern all with your help!!
@cprrowberry I put the link in the description above.
Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for - Canon's website is useless when it comes to manuals; and your step-by-step is perfect! Cheers!
@2isTheNew1 there is a link for it on my about page.
Thank you thank you!! i had struggled to follow the somewhat confusing directions that Canon gave. I didn't realize they were giving multiple ways to update, so I was mis-mashing the different steps together.

still useful! I'm using he mAGIc lantern build to get access to an intervalomter and some video options.
amazing how good is still the 550d
I've had to update firmware on other devices and yes it is nerve-racking to do. Good Job, now I think I'll do it now on my T2i.
Hello. The site is broken. Do you have any alternative links for the update file? Or can you send me the update via email? I really need the update file. Thank you!
@sye005 what do the pixels look like - black?
@905filmz
You're probably in movie mode. Go to manual and there should be the option on the first wrench.
Thanks for the info, Just updated my canon 60D and installed magic lantern. Worked perfectly !
@sye005 sorry to hear that, how did find them?
@sye005 how did you fix the dead pixels?
Thanks Dave :-) for clear and detail video upload for the CANON T2i - Firmware update 1.09
@ParaglidingManiac what is the make and model of your card?
Thanks for the very helpful tutorial, Dave! update went without a hitch. Weirdly one of my SD cards didn't work with it, but another one was fine
Thans a lot Dave! The update worked as expected.
How long it took? - under a minute, guys!
Cheers

Thanx. You mention extra stuff along the way but I will read the directions and watch your tape again before I try it!
@Carrrott I used the hell out of mine and it has never failed me for over a year.

Sry for my bad english xD Greets from Germany
@UglyMcGregor yes I know, I am guessing they will not fix it.
Love your videos on the 550d. Very very helpful. Greetz from Germany!
Thank you - nice to see how the process works.
But is it possible you can please update the link to the firmware. As Canon now do not show any firmware updates on that page. thanks so much.
Small tip use your iPhone to take photos of your settings. The iPhone is so light you can take photos even in low light.
hey my canon t2i doesnt have this option? in the menu display i can go as far as the 2nd wrench where you have the option to adjust the lcd brightness? any reason you think why this is happening?? i cant see my firmware...
Do you have to update it?
Dave, what's the difference between the firmwares? I mean why should I update it?
I've updated the firmware but still get that AE problem while zooming, it gets brighter, how to lock it, what is the option between the four?
It must be because you are shooting with high ISO, or if you are using a high quality image format, the card might not be fast enough when saving. Try using Sandisk Extreme series. They are really good (personal opinion) and you can get one with 8 gb in an affordable prize.
You did not show us where the root directory in the SD card was.
I got a .exe file only and not the .fir file you had.
I recognize the weird looking blue icon of the .exe file on your desktop but you used some .fir file I didn't have.
Any idea what's wrong?
PLEASE REVIEW LENSES
I just performed this update and everything worked fine. Great vid tut!
you could also do it in the EOS Utility
Hi Dave, what type of camcorder did you use to record this tutorial? The picture quality isn't too shabby on your camcorder either...hoping you could advise me on a Canon camcorder that I can use as my B footage since I will be doing weddings and other events where I need continuous footage
QUESTION DAVE! IS GOOD TO DISABLE THE CLEANING SENSOR OPTION EVERYTIME YOU TURN ON OR TURN OFF THE CAMERA AND DO IT MANUALLY???
@drumat5280 sure thing buddy. :)
Great video ! But i wont dare to do it haha. What benefits do you get for updating ?
@cat325ccr When placing the firmware file in the root directory, not DCIM or MISC, the camera will not recognize that there is a new file there. Have you run into similar issues and how did you get around them?
Drag it up where? When you say the root menu, you mean DONT put it in any folders right?
thanks for step by step in real time. I followed along with you. Not sure what the update actually does though.
Can u use this tutorial to put it on my rebel xsi (450d)

Hi my friend. How are you? O.k Plase, excuse me for the wrong inglesh. I don´t speak it.
I´m from Cali. Colombia. I have a problem about Rebel t2i "update" firmware (from 1.0.8 to 1.0.9)

Thank you so so so much I save the link for future updates. Thanks
great video man! always useful
can the canon update firmware be deleted off your computer after it was put on the card?
@ParaglidingManiac I would guess that this is a slow card, buy a class 6 or higher, see my gear page for what I use.
You're very knowlegable. Thanks for posting. Do you shoot sports much? I shoot Friday night games and as most do, I have trouble with lighting. I'm using a Cannon RebelXS and a 28-300 lense. @wolf35973 ok figured it out. had to extract the file to get to the .fif file. duh!
Dose this work for my xsi, 450d??
be sure to remove lens before updating the firmware...theres a possibility that some parts will not able to work if lens attached while updating...
My t2i does not have an update firmware option anywhere on the menu settings!!
Thanks for this!! I have been so scared to update my 550d, but will be doing it tonight! How long was the entire process once you started the update on the camera?
