omg! im so glad i found this video! ive had a t2i for a year and i could not figure out how to use it! you just helped me TREMENDOUSLY! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
I have my T2i for more than 6-5 years and never really understood how the Shutter, Aperture and ISO work on Video, even though I'd thought that my camera was in manual mode for all this time. But never really tried or tweak these three settings to get the desired effect. Love this video. I can now use my camera with nifty fifty to get amazing bokeh effect videos and some more.
Can't belive that 7 year old video helped me. For last 3 months was struggling with changing the apperture and was not able to understand how can we hange and today you solved it. Thankyou so much :)
That was a big help, I had no idea the manual feature existed and I have had the camera for almost 8 months. I never had a reason to learn the movie mode side of it, I bought it for picture taking. I have recently gained interest in the movie making aspect of the camera and again, this was a big help. I may hit you up for more info in the near future. Thanx for the upload.
Aperture and shutter speed shouldn't be set to the lowest possible as you say in the video. Aperture affects your depth of field, so in most cases it may be wrong to leave it at the lowest f stop, not to say that generally, lenses are not their sharpest at the lowest aperture. And shutter speed should be set, according to the 180 degree rule, to double your frame rate. 1/60 if you're using a 30fps setting.
Thanks dude, i'm planning on getting a t2i and these tutorials have really helped prepare me to use it out of the box! This camera is going to be perfect for me needs!
This was PERFECT! I purchased the t31 rebel last week and I STILL don't know how to use it, although anxious! I'll give it another shot before I return it (hope it get it after this video) so thanks again!
Very informative and you explain things more than once for us novices!...appreciate and i will be following your tips!!! You are making us better so thank you!!!
very awesome tutorial I really don't know much about slr cameras but I'm thinking of buying this one and a 50mm f1.8 lens cuz I really like editing videos and shutting pics I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on how to choose settings depending the pic you would like to take
very clear tutorial, 2 questions please: 1-if its in manual mode-how do i focus? in auto i can push the button down half way to focus, in manual it doesn't do it on it's own and it won't let me focus it manual, what am i missing? 2-would you know why when i played back a video i took i had lines going across it kinda like old tv sets? not that heavy and it came and went but it's never happened before. thanks for any info!
@WestCoastMods No I use apature 3 and CS5 I do have lightroom just have not gotten around to teaching myself out to use but from videos I have seen it being used it looks pretty powerful.
Thanks for this. The menu & selection process seem similar to other cameras I've used, but I'm sure your demonstration has saved me some time. Although it's 9 years old now this model still seems like a solid option for filming HD on a budget. I ordered mine today & am looking forward to doing some serious filming after a long break.
Another awesome video. Hey can you explain to me about what you mentioned regarding the frames per sec when rec vid. You said something about rec in slow motion and then editing in a dif setting. I did not know that you could record in slow motion...
@AreWeFamousNow You do know that as you zoom in and out your f-stop is changing if you have the f-stop set a 3.5 at 18mm causing your lighting to be brighter and darker as you zoom in and out.
Quick question... when shooting indoors with natural light or studio lighting what should the iso, aperture and shutter speed be on average. I've never owned a more advanced camera and I have no clue how to gauge my settings. Thanks!
@RolfParkerHoughton Yes it does. If you type your question into google there is a lot info on the t2i and progressive shooting It might answer your question in more depth
@NiallHornProductions To drop the apature you will need to hold down the AV button located on the upper right of the lcd screen and then use your dial at the front right of the camera
@XEJ21 You should be using a class 8 or higher. Try Transcend sd cards they are good make sure you get a class 10 if you buy one. Sandisk is good as well as long as it is a class 8 it will work fine.
okay this video was great and very helpful i know u probly dont work for canon but i just got my t2i was shooting in 24fps and i think 30fps b4 that when i load it on my computer from off the camera my words and sounds are really slow...u can see my mouth move then u here the words but as i look back on the camera everything is right on point what do u think the issue is.....
Thank you so so so so much for sharing. I bought this camera used a couple years ago and have been too intimidated to use it. This video was just what I needed.
Hi thanks for this tutorial I found it to be one of the best. Ive just bought a canon 550D but im having problems when I click record..after a few seconds it says 'movie recording has stopped automatically' why does it do this? is it a setting or what? just i dont know why...please help..thanks
i need help while i zoom in and out with my lens i notice the birghtness flickers on my t2i. is it the lens or a setting i can fix it with it is on manual too also. the lens is 18-55mm
Yes that is the normal size. What size is your card you should get a bigger one therefore you can shoot in higher resolution. Your, video quality will be much better. I hope this helps
Thank you! I was so upset when I shot a festival and all my video was blown out from the brightness of the day. I was unhappy I can't use the footage but glad it is a simple setting change to fix :)
Which button are you pressing to record? are you pressing the "Shutter" button that's on top of your camera? or are you pressing the button that's above the "AV" button and has a camera icon on it with a red dot next to it? Because you need to press the button that's above the "AV" button with the camera icon. If you press the shutter button even while it's on video mode it'll still capture a still image.
Hey There, Thanks for the video, good refresher as I haven't used the video function in an age. I seem to have the same problem. I have the 550d but it doesn't seem to go above 1280 x720 50fps or 640 x 480 50 fps..... are there any other settings that could be limiting the fps- rate or is there additional software? I have a 16gb Class 10 Transcend HD card in it at the mo. Thanks!
@4givenz What kind of card are you using and what is the speed. The camera does that due to the fact that more information is being put on the card then it can handel.
It's about Highlight tone priority which you'll find in menu at customfunctions (6). Normally it keeps disabled but your is enabled that's why you are seeing D+. You'll need it two play with different color back ground
@martheesi canon recommend a class 6 SD card or above. i had the same issue but not i have a new SD card from san disk and its really good and no issue what so ever. hope that helps.
I get that too. its the card buffering (or something). when you start recording, shake the camera around so theres lots of movment. it should stop recording like it has been, but if you record again it should be perfectly fine even with lots of movement :)
@AreWeFamousNow thanks for subbing man. I have an sd card reader and I drag the files from the card onto a folder on my desktop. You can also use apature if you have it.As you zoom out the apature will get smaller as you zoom in it will get bigger. The lens is a 3.5-5.6 so the lowest is 3.5 at it wides focusing length. It hard to explain in a message I will be on skype tomorrow night after 9:30 pm if you want me to explain it more hope this helps
This is one of the best video 🎥 on the Canon t2i config... Keep up the good 👆 work. I will start my first video this week too post on RUclips with my new Canon t2i. I got this camera 📷 for its good comments on video quality manually.
I'm still not clear on setting custom white balance and I don't have a great idea about what settings will work best; I photograph indoor skating and hockey events. I think auto chooses ISO 3200 in most rinks. The worst problem I get in auto is that the camera sets exposure by the bright ice so that the players are underexposed. Also the auto color balance in some rinks does not work very well and I get yellow ice. Should I use 5.6 on the kit lens if I'm going to be mostly zoomed in?
@MediaUnlocked Thanks for responding. I subbed cause of that. Now is there anyway to stop it or something? Liek i tried locking the f-stop. still happens though. This happens when im shooting film. Also what is the best why to upload footage from the sd card. through camera or sd card reader?
@quiles26 You cant record in slow motion but you can record in 60 frames per second which means when you edit the footage and drop it down to 24fps the slow motion is much smoother and looks nice. Let me know if this helps
Hey there, thanks for the videos its very helpful ok, i just get my Canon 550 D and have a problem with ISO i can not turn it to 100 ISO, ans its shows this all the time 200 D+, 400 D+, 800 D+ .... etc i dont know what does it meant with this D+ ? and why i can't set the ISO on 100 ? thank you in Advance

@TheMightyMagic Thanks, i just got the camera and im taking some shots to learn more about it, i just have another question. What happens if im on a sunny day, i want to leave the aperture high (f/1,8) but i cant go lower with the iso (100) and im having an overexposed? Is there another way? Thank you!
In closing. Depending on the situation you will move those around and make them even each other out. If you want to shoot something fast. You need a fast shutter speed..something dark...a higher ISO and a big opened eye (aperature)
@zAtt1337 You can switch from PAL to NTSC - with HD it basically influences the framerate - NTSC = 30/60, PAL = 25 / 50. Colorsystem is just an issue for the old analog world. I live in a "PAL country", too - but now using NTSC with 30 frames because LCDs work mainly with multiples of this.

Hi David, That was so straight forward... great help.... quick question for you, I just bought a rode microphone (videomic GO) , apparently I just plug it in a go.... but Im not so sure? is ther anything I need to do in the settings? Tried going into sound in the menu but it only says on or off... it dose not give me options.... whats your thoughts on this ?
I have a T2I and I just bought a RODE mic. I tried to change the sound recording setting to manual, and the only choice is on or off. I see you had the same problem. Did you figure it out, Mags?
11 years later and this was very helpful, thank you!
5 years later and this still helped me out a lot! thanks!!!
happy I could be of assistants
I’m still using it today haha
Using still today lol
THANKS for posting this! I got my camera 4 months ago and have been lost as to how to set up the manual settings for video. You're a life saver.

Tengo una canon t2i hace 6 años, y 13 años después de la publicación de tu vídeo me acabas de dar una gran ayuda, gracias!!!
There are so many big youtubers in here it's so cool that this is where they were when they started

I was just about to say this. 2.8 is a very shallow DOF
wow!!the best tutorial i ever came across on these seemingly impossible tasks!!well done bro!!

Thanks for the help, Loved the vid!
Thanks dude, this cleared up a lot, I'm recieving my 550D on Monday!
Great vid!
@lordifrit1 You need to put sd card in camera to record video or take pictures the movie mode is on the dial on the top of the camera
@LokeProductions I am happy to hear that thanks
@NiallHornProductions To drop the apature you will need to hold down the AV button located on the upper right of the lcd screen and then use your dial at the front right of the camera

Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Those auto settings really gave my videos a lot of noise. Can't wait to film with my custom settings.
Thank you so so so so much for sharing. I bought this camera used a couple years ago and have been too intimidated to use it. This video was just what I needed.

I called Canon support. They did not help at all! I watched your video, fixed my problem. Thank you so much!
happy I could help
Thanks for the tutorial, I was familiar with some of the features but some new features appeared as well.
@MediaUnlocked audio recorder or the most recommended equipment based on your experience

@EdwardXI I was there back in 06 and 07. I spent most of my time in the really big mall with the ski slop in it. I had a lot of fun there
Thank you! I was so upset when I shot a festival and all my video was blown out from the brightness of the day. I was unhappy I can't use the footage but glad it is a simple setting change to fix :)

Hello, i just want to know what shutter speed do you recommend to get a look like a movie. Thanks!
so helpful man, when i was shooting was getting crazy grainy footage, realized cause the auto settings blow.

THANKS! I've been looking the manual mode for a long time
Good vid!! I actually learned a lot. But I see that your T2i went up to 60fps. Mine only goes to 50fps?? Is there a way to change this? Thanks.
Hey there,
thanks for the videos its very helpful
ok, i just get my Canon 550 D and have a problem with ISO i can not turn it to 100 ISO, ans its shows this all the time 200 D+, 400 D+, 800 D+ .... etc
i dont know what does it meant with this D+ ?
and why i can't set the ISO on 100 ?
thank you in Advance
Awesome Video! I just shot a snowboard/ski edit last night and wish I would have seen this prior to it!
Why would you want to shoot at 24fps rather than 50 or 60fps?
On my fisheye lens it only went to 50fps? Is it b/c its a fisheye lens?
Thanks!
- Jburg
put into 60fps and make sure the shutter is twice so 120 on the shutter. What are you editing with
@TheMightyMagic Thanks, i just got the camera and im taking some shots to learn more about it, i just have another question. What happens if im on a sunny day, i want to leave the aperture high (f/1,8) but i cant go lower with the iso (100) and im having an overexposed? Is there another way? Thank you!
@khu0084 Hold down the Av button on the upper right of the lcd screen and use your dial or wheel in the front at the same time
In closing. Depending on the situation you will move those around and make them even each other out. If you want to shoot something fast. You need a fast shutter speed..something dark...a higher ISO and a big opened eye (aperature)
Excellent Video: David do you have any video tutorials on how to do a simple music video? Thanks
Rick
@StarkySoundzz happy to
This is exactly what I need. Thank you!
this video was verry helpfull , i plann on getting a t2i pretty soon thanks.
Quick question for you Dave, if I want to take photos at a show and the musicians are jumping around and getting hype, how would I take a good picture without it looking blurry like a glow stick being waved at a rave show? I want a clear shot of then jumping around.
You need a flash or a higher shutter speed.
@MediaUnlocked Yeah, I know that feeling...New to Lightroom myself and it takes awhile to get familiar with. I use Sony Vegas 10 for my videos...don't own a Mac or I would use Final Cut Pro. Just got done watching all your video's.....enjoyed the "on location" vid...nice stuff and the model...well lets just say I had to rewind a couple of times....lol
Have you turned the dial to movie mode? In some of the other modes the movie menu options will not appear.
Thank you for sharing this! Excellent tutorial.
hi, just wondering when to use the various exposures for video? have read above that faster shutter speed is good for fast movement. but what about general recording? Is there a general rule for recording @ 24fps? i heard something about the shutter speed should always be twice that of the fps? thanks.
@NiallHornProductions Drop your shutter to 30 and what is your apature and what lens are you using
7 years later and I learned a lot too - thank you Just wondering why the Canon 550D has no option to record at 30fps. That is what I shoot at on my Iphone, which always seems better quality but I then get confused when I import a mixture of the two into Premiere Pro as to what the sequence settings should be if I have some shot at 30fps and some at 24fps.
Happy to help. It really will not matter much at all for editing.
what do you use as an editor and why do you want to drop your resolution?
my manager gave this video as a tutrial for me ..... thanks a lot .. nice job :)
@DaRkRoCk24 that hard to do because setting change so much depending on lighting
Your video was very helpful to me, thank you so much!
its up to you but I like to pre-set my focal length be for I shoot and keep it there
Thanks for the good tips. Still relevant today...
Jason Bolte Thanks for the feedback!
please show me how to get that film look while shooting with the T2I what settings do u use I would be will to pay you for a telephone consultation. thanks
Hi David, That was so straight forward... great help.... quick question for you, I just bought a rode microphone (videomic GO) , apparently I just plug it in a go.... but Im not so sure? is ther anything I need to do in the settings? Tried going into sound in the menu but it only says on or off... it dose not give me options.... whats your thoughts on this ?
are you on the M mode on the dial?
Yep on the M
I have a T2I and I just bought a RODE mic. I tried to change the sound recording setting to manual, and the only choice is on or off. I see you had the same problem. Did you figure it out, Mags?
Buddy this was superb, really helped a lot
+A Singh thanks
This video is so old, but still helpedme, i dont found a video of this in spanish, but i understand english. Thankyou very much :D
no problem
@dudeheight What kind of card do you have and what class is it. You need an sd card that is a class 8 or higher.
What size, brand and speed sd card do you have. If you have a class 8 or less your card is not fast enough to record video.
@EdwardXI Thanks how is Dubia I have been there a few times
