it's really not that crazy. he's hitting a stationary vehicle that's way smaller than his own car, the change in velocity is only about 13 mph. the car being hit would probably have serious injuries.

This looks easy eh? Couple of months ago I was in a frontal collision and I still have to coup with some physical hindrance because of that accident. Particular my eye sight is damaged. The airbag popped up well. I drove way slower then this guy. I wasn't wearing a neck braise (off course) during the collision and I was driving a Peugeot 107. I was cutoff by an Opel Astra, I had no time to break and I hit it full in the flank. Mine car turned around and after it stopped I got out right away and felt well. But that same night I started to noticed problems with my eyesight, it became harder to focus. I hoped it would go ago away after a day or so but it did not, it changed. I now have a mild blindness in my right eye which is pretty annoying. . So, kids don't try this! You have only one body and this instrument is pretty tough but also really complexed and therefor delicate.

This isn't accurate though. In a real crash, the driver would probably be jerking the steering wheel trying to avoid the crash. He lets go and braces himself against the seat
Usually people brace before a normal crash too. It only takes half a second to brace, but a few seconds to come to a stop

My brother was basically blind in one eye for 6 months as it slowly healed because he was getting change out and the airbag went off causing a penny to shoot into his left eye. Totally a freak accident but he had to wear an eye patch for months.
Luckily he wasn't permanently blinded in that eye (the human body is an amazing machine with healing capabilities). He regained most of his vision but it will probably take another year for him to claw back a bit more acuity in that one eye.

Airbag did nothing, he didn't hit it. Play it back at .25 speed, he could have not had the airbag and it would have turned out the same.

now it should be clear why you shouldn't wrap your thumb around the wheel and that 9 and 3 is better than 10 and 2 in our modern times
Whether 10 and 2 is safe depends on the airbag, but even with modern advanced airbags it's on the borderline. Go above 10 and 2, like 11 and 1 or 12 o'clock, and that's really dangerous. With the first gen airbags from the 90's I wouldn't go above 9 and 3. With the modern airbags I would say 10:00 and 2:00 is the absolute upper limit, 10:01 and 1:59 is in the danger zone. I keep my hands around 9:30 and 2:30. I have a 2011 Honda Accord and when the airbag lid opens it hits the steering wheel between about 11 and 1. And wrapping thumbs around the wheel is a bad idea.
The reason I keep my hands at 9:30 and 2:30 instead of something lower is that 9 and 3 is directly in the path of the top spokes of my steering wheel and anything lower, like 8 and 4 is just uncomfortable and harder to control the car. The worst I risk at 9:30 and 2:30 is maybe a minor powder burn from the airbag, I'll take the possibility of a minor airbag burn over being more likely to deploy the airbag from a wreck from not being able to control the car as well.

@@ronaldwoofer5024not necessarily. Airbags almost always go off in serious collisions where the car could be deemed totaled, but not always. Nowadays with the extreme cost of cars, it is completely feasible to repair a car that’s had a deployment and keep the policy going, and maintain a clean title. If the collision is minor enough, and the cost of replacing the airbag modules and reprogramming/replacing the controller itself isn’t prohibitive, then insurance won’t total a car with a deployment, let alone refuse to maintain coverage on it.

Its honestly an extremely minor collision. he only experiences a change in velocity of about 13 miles per hour, not even enough to hit the airbag. He's in a heavy car rear ending a smaller stationary vehicle.
I feel like you're a child and have never been in a car crash. I wouldn't say "extremely minor" since 13mph is quite a bit. If you are an adult, next time you're in your car, go 5mph and slam on the brakes as hard as you can, you can really feel it.

Just bear in mind that the kinetic energy is proportional to velocity^2. If you double the speed, energy of a moving car grows 4 times! So rapid change in velocity is not only a function of the change of the velocity. v2^2-v1^2 = (v2-v1)(v2+v1) where v2 is velocity after the impact and v1 is the speed before the accident.
Reducing speed even by 13 mph means huge energy loss if a car goes fast.

It’s because this man expected the collision, whereas in a real world scenario it would be less expected and the airbag would save you. He full well knew what was coming and intentionally caused the collision, so he had time to brace and avoid striking the airbag. In a true traffic collision you often don’t have time to even process what’s happening, let alone brace, so the airbag helps by slowing your forward movement and prevents you from head butting the steering wheel.
