Office Vlog 0x01 - Checking Ethernet and A/C and Other Things

  • I'm going back-to-back on this one because I'm trying to make get set up and ready to film as quickly as possible. I was a little more tired than I realized as the day went on from editing the first Vlog so I may space these out more in the future.
This didn't quite as I expected today, I'm not sure how to handle the ethernet ports. I may end up just ignoring them since I won't need that many endpoints ultimately. But I'm still happy with getting stuff into the office and making progress!
Here are some ways to help me make more videos!

I love how 70's the office space looks, with the white wood paneling and the walnut trim. It's so perfect.

If anyone has any recommendations for dealing with the ethernet routing I would love to hear it. This is my first time dealing with drop ceilings and I'm still learning how to best work with it.
The A/C vent I wanted to move was taped to the ducting above it in a way I don't want to mess with without getting permission from the landlord first. So that's why I backed out of that. I after uploading I never mentioned that.

If the air returns just go into the ceiling without ducts you need use plenum rated cables in the drop ceiling. I would just replace the current cables with your own.
Remove the wall plates, pull string up into the ceiling. Then use that to pull new cable down to the wall plates. Leave the old ones bundled up in the ceiling, that way you can revert it all when you leave if requested.
Get a cheap set of fiberglass rod fishes and you shouldn't have much trouble running the cables though the ceiling.
Also you can run CAT6 to the existing CAT5 jacks if you get 24AWG CAT6. It doesn't cost much more than CAT5e, and it will do 1G/2.5G/10G. You should get 10G at the distances in that office if you want to upgrade your machines later.

If building management will let you, snip your cables a couple feet from the top plate above the ceiling and punch keystones onto them. It's not the greatest solution, but at least you won't have to run cables down the walls. (Mark both sides of each cut and put a couple matching connectors on the ends that run to the existing patch panel, so in case the offices ever get joined again they can just plug back in.)
Put a small wall-mounted patch panel in your new storage room, terminate your new horizontal cables to that, and put regular 8P8Cs on the far ends so you can plug them into the keystones you put in the ceiling.

    • @ml.2770
      @ml.2770 2 года назад +12

Just run new cables. You can use the current ones to pull the new ones up into the ceiling and just leave the old ones up there until you move out one day.

It may also depend how friendly your neighbours end up being? Realistically all you need is a switch in that room. You may even be able to cut down the costs of your internet by sharing a connection if that is possible and segregate your networks using vlans.
Or be really dirty and hide a network switch in the drop ceiling and then you don't even need to pull the cables all the way back. You could even run it off an extension cord back to your office in case the switch needs the occasional power cycle. :D
Otherwise pull the cables off the back of the jacks and use them as pull wires to get your own cable up the walls as mentioned by Tim. :)

I would suggest getting an cheap tone generator. Then you can tone with lines before they are bundled at the end and cut the lines.

That wobbly table. I get Flashbacks. Was with a company that was to move offices. I was roped in to wait for the telco guy. Ofc this did not preclude me from my other task. I did IT & a bit of graphics work for them. So i loaded all i needed to my laptop and went to the empty office building. We were the first ones to move in after years. I found exactly 2 chairs and a table. A wobbly table, just like that. Thinking back now, one of the best days at work i had. I set up in the entrance, a glass box out to small town mainstreet. The view wasn't half bad and noone bothered me, well except for the telco guy who had the good manners to be late enough for me to get my work done.

If the base of the lamp can be detached, maybe you could use some pipe clamps to screw the lamp post directly to the side of the short bookshelf. would save space, and let the table butt up next to it, preserving precious wall space.

Wait... the A/C return vents go straight to the dropped ceiling? If so, those filters you put in won't do you any good because the A/C is mostly going to pull in dust and dirt from up there. If anything, they'll make it harder for the system to suck air from the rooms so they'll make your air work worse. (Spoken from experience with a home that had an A/C that sucked in air mostly from the inside of the drywall).
The supply vent (that you couldn't take out because it's probably attached to the conduit), I can't hear at all on my headphones when you're using your lapel mic. So it may not be necessary to turn the A/C off after all.

    • @mmmlinux

Those return vents are just open to the space above the drop ceiling? That doesn't sound like its correct... Those filters wont do much, if anything for the air coming out the supply vents. There is probably another filter on the hvac unit that should be replaced, you should find out where that is and make sure you can change it before that wall is up. And if the hvac unit is in the other space then you need to talk to your land lord about how it will be maintained.

What about getting 8x AV1200 Powerline adapter kits you just need one master unit the rest can be the slave adapters the master goes into the router should give you what you want, Just forget about the ethernet sockets as it looks like a lost cause and saying the building looks like the building was poured then there should be lots of grid iron in the walls to stop interference reaching anywhere else, A HUAWEI B331 3G/4G Router plus the HUAWEI B331 3G/4G Antenna pack might work so you don't have to use your mobile phone for internet, A BROTHER HL3150CDW should be more that adequate for requirements you then just have to fork out for the toner cartridges and staying in the room while the unit is printing is a bad idea it melting plastic gives of nasty fumes.

Even though you are getting a great deal, you are still paying $36,000 for that office so don’t think you are stuck with the noisy intake or anything else that doesn’t work for you. Just tell the landlord to replace it and email him daily until he does. It’s in their best interests to keep you happy because replacing YOU (the tenant) is their biggest expense.
Also, I (personally) would cut the zip ties and pull the wires back to your unit, but the most direct solution would be to use the existing wire to pull new wire up into the ceiling and then abandon the existing wire. A 1000’ roll of CAT5 is super cheap.

The wiring junction is in space that he is not leasing, a wall will be built in that hallway to separate his space from the other space. He wanted to pull the wires going tot the jacks in his space out of that junction and move them above the ceiling so he can bring them down to a new junction in one of the rooms in his area. But the way they're bundled up above the junction means he would affect the bundling/routing of the other wires going to the vacant areas and he doesn't want to mess that up without permission from the landlord

Man i hate that tester. When you work in a poorly lit area the leds are so bright they become hard to look at, also tracking those lights are a pain compared to the slightly more pricey Klein tester.

My advice is ask for someone to buy you a network toner. Amazon sells one for 19$. Your idea in theory works but in practice you gonna hate life!
Run new wires. A box of decent cat6 is not expensive. Man, I have on in my shed you could have. I also have some network switches I could donate. Even a Cisco firewall if you want to get fancy. Is the shipping that’s a killer. ;(

(21:11) I'm curious as to if you're using a mobile network that can detect and charges for mobile hotspot usage separately.
You using tethering reminds me of when I used my phone's hotspot when I moved into my previous flat until I was able to get a home Internet connection, though in my case, I used (and still use) a mobile network that doesn't track and charge for mobile hotspot usage separately.

Oh yeah, unbundling those cables is definitely not worth it. Much easier to pick up some extra long factory terminated Ethernet cables (so you don't have to crimp your own plugs onto them) and use the existing cables to pull the new ones into the ceiling, and run them to where you want them to go. Then you can chop off the Ethernet plug and punch them down into the wall jacks. Don't forget to label the old cables in case the landlord wants them restored before you move out.
For the clock, I'm guessing those LEDs are just worn out from running 24x7 for years. If you're stuck for a project, replacing them with modern high-brightness LEDs would be relatively simple (although de-soldering the old ones would be time-consuming). That should boost the brightness considerably without the need to replace the resistors as well. Unless they're under-currenting the LEDs to save battery life, but replacing them with modern ones should still help.
Anyway, great to see the progress, even if it's only a little at a time. But I'm sure the hard work will be worth it once you're moved in and back to making videos!

You could get a wooden barstool from walmart to put the water crock on. shouldn't be too expensive.

Leave the network cable. If you must fish a new able down the old hole and repunch your cable on the existing jack, leaving their cable in the wall. Get a proper punch down tool.

Not that you can readily look up and see, especially if you're checking time while filming.
