Office Vlog 0x02 - Where are the Bookshelves? & Hardcopy Ready!

- It was way harder to find a bookshelf that I would have thought. I'm putting something really heavy on this one so I don't want a two-piece one from wallmart that will collapse. I needed something stronger.
I've also finally got my hardcopy stuff ready and explore how I'm going to be mailing copies of the printout to supporters who go for that tier!
I also take care a few more odds and ends along the way.
Here's the section on the program for generating the printout file: • How I Create my Hardco...
Here are some ways to help me make more videos!

17:40 those other "quiet" vents are air returns. The noisy one is the one that's actually blowing air in.
And it's "directional", blowing the air in four directions outward from the vent, adding to the sound level (in addition to the higher noise due to greater airflow).
Seeing LGR's name on the printout made me smile. Keep up the good work Shelby!
Adrian's is there too!
I really like this. I'm a photographer but I've always wanted to have an corporate office to do corporate stuff in. Like print shit and have important meetings and drink bad coffee.
I realy like the process of setting everything up and optimizing for your needs.
I've a photography studio in Northern Ireland and we joke that our office in the studio is so corporate. I've never worked in a corporate environment but we've loads of VoIP phones, printers and computers and I feel warm and fuzzy with the corporate feel. The customer facing areas aren't corporate but I like my own area to be. We are moving in the new year to a new much bigger studio and I've been watching these videos as we need to get builders to fit it out and I think this is interesting to see how he's done it. It's nice to see he's super excited. It's possibly overkill for a RUclips creator but he can do a lot with it. Ps: I got a Nespresso on a a prime day, so you can drink good coffee cheaply these days lol
@@WhatALoadOfTosca I'm always delighted to hear about other office enthusiast! Personally I work from home, but home offices are totally legit too, right? The only downside in mine is that it's quite crammed and lacks the space for a full size Xerox machine.
I had one of those PowerKeys on my Mac SE/30 in the 90s. Basically it allowed you to add the functionality of the keyboard power key on the PPC era Macs to the earlier 68K ones. It was the key on the top of the AEK, AEKII and Apple Design keyboard with the left facing triangle. The old Macs didn't have the right power mode so they had to be switched off and on manually and that key was useless on them. IIRC you just had to run the keyboard to the PowerKey strip and run the ADB to your Mac for it to work, it switched the power plug off to your Mac simulating the soft power off of the new machines. Pretty neat!
Good to see you're finally getting some productive use out of the space. And it sounds like it'll be a lot more productive than you used to be with having to shuffle things around just to do day to day tasks!
Definitely, having the space to just leave things set up feels decadent to me so the idea of just being able to *leave* the printer there is amazing.
Oh yeah, I know that feeling well. Haven't been able to get to my storage space since the first lockdown 18 months ago, so my tiny apartment is full of vintage computers and parts that have arrived from eBay since then! I can't even get to my workbench anymore!
That is a wild setup for your camera. The ssd drive mounted above it and everything.
For your window, any commercial printer will be able to supply you with foamex in a single sheet cut to size. That way it will look super tidy and you won't have to cut it :)
Your corner looks really good! And I've really enjoyed these blogs!
My spouse works at a major Nationwide furniture retailer. They're running 8 weeks out average, some up to 6 months out. It's everywhere. When I bought my desk drawers from Ikea in March, I had been checking the site daily to snipe them.
The ports are backed up, holding up not only completed furniture, but also bits to build for in country builders like Ashley. On top of that, the power outages, etc in China are holding up even more parts inventory.
This is likely to be the new normal for the next couple years. My spouse says that their company is expecting this to continue for at least another 6 months to a year. They are dealing with a lot of irate customers over things that they basically have no control over any longer.
Really enjoying the series. Looks fun with the office space, very happy for you and I appreciate you bringing us along for the ride! :)
As I mentioned in an earlier office vlog video you could get taller bookshelves to cover the window but up to you it's your space
that's actually a way more practical idea than messing around with pieces of foam
You could put a Filter over the AC Duct to Muffle the Sound
I'd be cool if this channel became a moving channel only. Real great to see everything that goes into making Tech Tangents
Hey thats really awesome of that person sending you the Cat6. Can't wait to see that vid! I'd like to do that to my place sometime.
Really enjoying this series, glad to see you getting back on your feet.
I don't remember if your using the weird copier area in the hallway or not, if not it would be kinda fitting to permanently setup the hard copy supporters... well out in the copier area..
A technicality when regarding the German special letter, ß, being unavailable due to keyboard, capitalization (although a capital variant exists nowadays), or other technical limitations; ss/SS can be substituted.
But it's best to always seek advice from someone dealing with Post or reading up about international mailing regarding non-English letters.
p.s. It's called a Eszett or scharfes S 🙂
I often see "sz" in old floor plans and other drawings- I think that has something to do with the stencil sets not having the ß
I don't think USP will care if he replaces it with "ss" and i can assure you, german post does not care. I've seen street signs where it is ß on one side and ss on the other. Of the same sign, not the street. As long as it is close enough, it will get there, mostly.
@@RevJerusalem I primarily said this because I think the printer he uses for the hardcopy can't support certain non-English letters or at the very least get confused if he tried to send it to the lp0 device
@@RevJerusalem lol, the street sign observation is hilarious. while living in the biggest city where this might occur a lot, I've never seen it myself. do you have any examples in the form of pictures?
Really loving these set up vlogs! So excited to see what you can do with this new space!!
Thanks for these videos! Really motivates me to get my home office in order...
amazing that printer ribbons are still produced
That libretto, I love it, I own 2 myself, a Japanese one I picked up as junk and another a kind old lady sold me that she used to use when travelling in france
I feel your pain on the bookshelf hunt. Lately my local goodwills never have furniture and when they do the prices are jacked up
I got stupid lucky finding an intact 1970's metal and wood desk that suited my needs at a Goodwill. I didn't pay much for it, thankfully.
Love that Oki Data printer! Making me nostalgic.
For the vent noise what you want might want to try is either using a piece of plexiglass or for more sound absorption another ceiling tile and hang either a few inches below the current vent on little chains. This should help absorb the sound but still allow the air to deflect out the sides. You should be able to do this no problem yourself and your landlord shouldn’t have an issue with it since you’re not altering what’s there or changing the air flow.
For those shelves, the little wire retainer might seem like they would be stronger but they’re not. The slot is actually cut through the middle so you really only have half the shelf thickness above the clip holding the shelf. And if the shelf is press wood, if it bows any it will break the top of the slot right off. So don’t put anything too heavy on them.
Great work Shelby loving your Videos and this epic adventure of the new office. Its almost like hanging out with you pal..
321 DVD Xcopy was half the reason my parents bought a computer at all in the early 00s, to copy rented DVDs. Good stuff
Hi! Sorry for the struggle with furniture...have you considered online-platform secondhand grabs? At least in Finland there's always a lot of choice for a nice price.
Also a word about the BILLY shelf; while it's good value for the money, the shelves won't hold much weight. Data sheet says up to 30kg/shelf but if you populate them with heavy books, binders or vintage electronics (hah) they will start to curve. Not right away, but after a year or so, and it's....annoying. For lighter stuff, like spare parts cabinets (for resistors, caps etc), Billy works just fine :)
Nice work dude! I bet things will be incredibly nice when the office is fully set up
This is such an addictive series to watch, love your excitement for the new office
Much better shave pattern :) Also very sweet studio appearing :))
Wonderful progress. You look much happier. Back when we did such things, I would have had to use continuous paper with self adhesive labels and spend ages making sure the addresses lined up with the actual labels and then print them. Then you would get the office junior to help you peel, stick and stuff all the envelopes. "And it has to be done before you finish tonight!" 😄
I actually have two boxes of continuous adhesive labels I wanted to use for this! But I realized that they are probably 30-40yrs old and the glue wouldn't stick to envelopes any more.
It would have been fun to do it that way but at least I found another "period correct" way to do it because I figure that's part of the fun of getting one of these.
@@TechTangents I think you got the best result possible. ✔
I like to use the big cheap whiteboard panels for blocking out windows. Similar to the foam sheets it'll bounce the light back out instead of heating up, but is rigid and won't degrade over time. The only downside is you have to to cut them to size instead of getting 'close enough' and just squishing the foam in place.
The first vent could be closer to the air handler. If so, switching covers won't do anything. If there was a whistle, switching might help. Be careful running the network cable. In a commercial space even network cable (in-wall / plenum) frequently requires a licensed electrician. You will only need to remove one side of the bookshelf to make room to adjust the shelves.
The weird "German B" is an ß or "esset" and you can emulate that with two s's. Should you run into problems with German "umlauts" ä ö ü you can just type the regular vowel and put an e at the end. Love the detail to attention! Living the dream of all us nerds that want a shop or office. Very happy for you!
Love it. Love watching the progress.
I only buy power strips with a right angle plug now. So much more useful behind furniture.
"I found this 12 port VGA switcher, I don't need it though"
(Me yelling at screen) GET IT GET IT GET IT GET IT GET IT GET IT
Best thing to do is fasten those shelves to the wall, really.
Makes them more stable and, if they fail, they won't all fall down.
That “weird fancy B” is an Eszett. It’s actually just used when there are two S’s, so it’s just a ligature
ß
I always found it odd that it's called "sz" when functionally it's equivalent to "ss" (and in appearance too).
I've seen some 16th-century English that uses ß as a ligature for ſs (ſ was used even in English as an alternate form of s into the early 19th century).
@@fnjesusfreak today you can replace it with two s, I think it originated from sz.
It is not just ligature. ß should be a harder s and the vowel in front of it is pronounced long. the vowel in front of ss is pronounced short.
So there is a correct Version vor each word. But if you cant type the specal chars, it is no problem to replace them ß->ss, ä-> ae, ö->oe, ü->ue. Useless Fact: german crossword puzzels use only the replaced version.
@@Drummer3333 ä-> ae, ö->*oe, ü->*ue
@@fnjesusfreak it's called "sz" because the pronunciation is kinda in the middle of "s" and "z"
The filming area already looks nice. Good job!
6:20 I'm pretty sure that isn't a bookshelf. It looks like a nearly obsolete piece of furniture called an entertainment center.
The Matrix Switcher is, if it WORKS properly, probably worth $200 to $300. So, if you can make it work and figure out a way to do something useful with it, you've gotten a fantastic deal.
I'm not usually a fan of extremely frequent videos, but I'm enjoying sharing this ride!
Loving these vlogs!
Love the updates on the office :)
Yo can change "ß" to just "ss" in streetnames and something like "ä, ö, ü" to "ae, oe, ue".
I was only going to subscribe to the normal hardcopy tier, but now you've got me excited for a few months of the physical tier as well :P
That Extron Crosspoint matrix switcher is a great find, and it does much more than just VGA too: you can use it to switch composite, s-video, RGBS (composite sync only though), RGBHV, and even component from any of the 12 inputs to any or all of the 8 outputs. You'll need BNC to RCA socket adapters to hook up standard RCA style cables to it which can be found cheaply, but to connect RGBHV/VGA, s-video, or RGBS you might need to make or buy pigtail connectors. Looks like yours is a model that switches stereo audio as well, although you need Phoenix connectors to hook up audio. I've got a newer model that I found on eBay for a little more than you paid that was sold for parts and all I needed to do was recap it and it's rock solid.
I freakin' LOVE network wiring videos.
Welcome to the CrossPoint club. I'm very jealous - mine is only 8x4 :)
Edit: Hopefully it works. FYI, you can test it by plugging composite into the green input and patching that input to your output. For non-RGB inputs, R=C/Pr, G=Y, B=Pb. H sync can carry composite sync as well, but both H and V sync must only have sync on them (if you passed composite video on H, then it won't sync to that, but sync is optional if your output doesn't need it - it can't generate sync though).
Edit 2: You can substitute the ß with ss. Do not substitute with B. So e.g., straße becomes strasse ("street" in English)
Really keen for the networking rewire video!
So... Nobody's gonna mention that he owns a copy of the Sonic Mania Collector's Edition? Looks cool alongside the other games he has in his little filming area! Also, Fun little transition into the Paper Printout Patreon Supporter and RUclips Member Credits!
Amazing price for the Extron thing. Just the good quality BNC sockets are worth $100+
Bookshelves - try to find anything home improvement related. I had to visit 3 stores to buy a ceiling bod for a light fixture. 12 weeks backorder for a shower install. Cannot even find a contractor to do a job. Lowes has ONE vanity left for me to buy. When people finally wake up to supply chain issues, it will be way too late. One contractor said he could do an estimate after Thanksgiving with a job start date of Feb 2022 - depending on supplies.
You scored with that Extron switch!
Those go for a TON of money on e-Bay. They're extremely useful in the crtgaming scene. You can look up all your RGB systems and monitors to it.
36:15 As long as the ribbons are in good condition and not frayed, you can re-ink them with stamp pad refills. This type of ink will not dry out and has been used for decades by typewriter users.
Loving the Vlogs
Great build series. One thing to note is that the AC system is causing a 60hz hum in the video when it's running. I understand you'll have it off during actual A roll shooting tho
Office stores like Staples and Office Depot carry bookshelves in various sizes.
The Leaning Watertower of Abukuku is making me nervus
It's so odd to see you walking into all the Goodwill's I used to frequent and looking at the same kinda stuff I always eyeballed and then eventually bought haha. I still have a lot of good retro tech from my stint in the prison that is AZ.
last time i was this early my parents still loved me
I've actually also been in the market for bookshelves, and also for Billy shelves. They're pretty much all out of stock in every local IKEA to me, so you're not alone.
I make my own bookcases from plywood, braced and supported as required
This video brought to you by Linus Tech Tips 😁 Loving the latest content, Shelby!
You and the Retail Archeology channel should collab with all this thrift shopping going on in phoenix
I noticed that each of the four quadrants of the loud air vent seem to be shaped to direct the air flow in a different direction. Maybe the idea is to spread the cold air around the space more evenly (instead of dumping it all straight down), at the price of creating more noise.
The Billy shelf at IKEA has been almost identical since 1979, so they probably counts as vintage even when bought in 2021 :)
You've got too much energy in the morning dude! Congrats on the new space...gonna be a big step for your channel. Still loved the walk thru time you brought to LTX in 2019....that was pure history!
FB marketplace "I want to buy your ugly bookshelf!" and youll have several free ones.
I'm enjoying the office vids.
Oooo, good morning indeed.
(1:33) I can relate! I wanted vintage furniture for my bedroom, but my parents wouldn't allow me to get real vintage furniture, so I settled for the closest things I could get.
(3:00) It's only now that I realised that you couldn't really check the IKEA website for stock levels before going to the store itself.
(12:20) You mean Magenta ink?
Anyway, it's something I've had to put up with on random books I'd find on NLB Public Libraries book exchange shelves (where anyone can leave books they don't want and want to give away for free), where the spines on some of the books have faded, from the shelves of the previous owners.
I need to find a way to check if the tint installed on my window by request of the previous owner of my flat lets in UV light or not, but the small bookshelf in my bedroom has doors on them because I generate a lot of dust.
Now that I know it's likely caused by Magenta ink fading, I could recreate the effect in GIMP to see how the spines and covers of some of my favourite books and book series would suffer.
Some of those Goodwills look familiar, almost. I was in Scottsdale last weekend and we actually did a tour de force of a lot of Goodwills in the area, though sadly a lot of it was a bust. Not sure about furniture but usually when I've been thrifting Savers has been FAR kinder to me all around.
Those 110-block style punch-down keystones are pretty much one-and-done devices. They'll work if you rip the old cables off and punch new ones on (assuming you get all the bits of wire and jacket out), but they're never quite as good the second time around. Leviton keystone clones should be a couple bucks each; I'd just replace them for peace of mind.
You should get a TV cabinet and have some cool old TV in there
Instead of putting your mini-computer in storage, you should put it out on display. Especially until you get it working.
the fancy B (ß) is a form of the "s" we call it sharp S
The networking rewiring video will be extremely useful for me. I just moved into a new home and the walls already have the network outlets, but no cables. I do have a lot of network wires around but never did pass them through walls and I'm also a drywall n00b so I'm eager to watch that one as well. Keep up the cool work!
There are tons of guides out there that will be *way* more helpful than watching another n00b screwing it up. One that comes to my mind is Snazzy Labs' _"Adding 10 Gigabit Ethernet to my 129-Year-Old House"_ - not the best, yet informative and fun to watch.
@@misatzu thanks for the tip. Will look into that guide.
@@leandrocosta3709 thanks for replying! let my know how you liked it if you want to.
There are folding machines to fold into thirds 8.5" x 11" sheets.
It's pretty safe to say you won't see one on this channel desptite being incredibly helpful, unless he happens to stumble across one in a thrift store :)
I love Billy bookshelves but my local Ikea hasn't had them in months. It especially sucks since I moved a few months ago and needed a couple extra bookshelves to match the ones I already had.
If you lay a piece of paper up against one of those AC diffusers the supply would blow the paper out and the return would show a bit of suction to the paper. You should be able to move the diffusers to another section of the ceiling if the flexpipe is long enough to reach, also I cant see the landlord having any issue if you do this. Unfortunately without a new longer piece of flexpipe you wont be able to move it far.
Hope this helps a little, I"m a professional technologist and also a huge fan!
@21:00 The only shelves I've seen that use that style of metal wire rails are similar looking ones my family has had since at least the early 80s. You could have a period-correct piece after all.
Ah, IKEAs Billy/Oxberg combo, a tru classic bookshelf, I myself have 4 and half of it for my books ;)
Now you've got me curious about that secret project. I'd guess from the weight and width requirements a CRT but the depth of a billy shelf is only 11 inches. You obviously want a vintage look for the shelf even when you first show it off so I'd think it's something that looks interesting. You want to move it out of the filming area so it might still be entertainment related. Maybe a component system? Doubt I got close there but I'll still be looking forward to it.
I don't know if they have this in Arizona, but in Canada they have something called Wal-Mart. It's a discount department store that amongst other things sells office furniture on the cheap (usually towards the back of the store).
The walmart bookshelves come as two parts that are essentially stacked on top of each other and aren't very strong. I did look at them but didn't like how they were made. I also couldn't find them in a natural wood style which I really want.
@@TechTangents Go full LGR and get some woodgrain contact paper.
Walmart is an American company (Arkansas), and we've got plenty of them on our side of the ditch too. ;p
When the border is fully opened I'll once again be in fairly close proximity to one on each side - US and Canada ;p
I liked the demonstration of the clip with the bad lighting vs the normal lighting. It would also be fun if you did a video on your color grading process, as that seems to be not talked about much on tech youtube channels.
That fancy German B is ß and it is called Eszett, it’s usually translated as “ss” and fun fact, has no uppercase version :)
Did the Data General Mini Computers make it over to the new office? Good luck with the new digs...
Those fixed shelves use what are known as cam lock nuts. They are moveable, but the screws will widen the holes(possibly chip up the wood around it too) for your shelf pins and make them fall out if you were ever to move that type of shelf there. Shame your furniture isn't probably worth fixing up and trying to repair some of the damage/scratches to the wood. Almost seems worth it for a youtube channel.
Shelbyyyyy!! You shaved! Hell yeah bud! :D
I bet lgr loves all the woodgrain
Oh boy that water cooler placements giving me anxiety!
$12 Extron?! I JUST PAID $95 for a 12x8!! Hopefully it works! Bag might just be adapter? Fingers crossed. Cables for that thing are a whole sperate best!
Wow a powerkey!
That's a sweet Libretto, I have, what I believe is, the last model in the series, a dual screen model called the w100. And since it's relatively modern (2010) I got a new ssd for it and want to do some modern linux experiments, mainly getting it's only 2 physical buttons and touch screens working and have something that will be snappy enough with the 2GB of ram it has. Both Ubuntu mate and Lubuntu seem to work well for that, but I also want to try and find a chromium os build that will not bootloop on it... or fail to load a wifi driver... or stop seeing my usb keyboard >_>
Oh right! also keep up the great videos, looking forward to all the cool things you had plans for previously, but never got the space to do until now.
I am not sure if it was mentioned by someone else in the comments but I felt I should mention to you about UV light around 12:40 minutes in the video washing out color on printed materials. Florescent lights will do the same thing.
I suppose I should have watched further into the video and I would have heard you say you are planning on changing the bulbs in the florescent fixtures. My mistake for making a comment before finishing the video. Also since I am here making my first comment to your videos I will take the time to tell you that I really enjoy your content. I wish I were in a position where I could contribute to your content financially.
I’m going to take a gamble and that the calculator is based on the HP (Haitch-Pea) 12c.
Extron switcher for 12 bucks! Fuck yeah!
I'll trade you Goodwills. The ones in my area have piles of furniture and shelves, but they throw away all of the computer equipment, out of fear of sharing information. They always have a wide variety of individual speakers and low end monitors, though.
Yeah, the Goodwill and the Salvation Army shop here in Niagara Falls, you can't really find computer stuff around here anymore. Pity.
High quality shelves. 🤣😂🤣
