I really appreciate YTs who share important information like this and help make the way a little easier for others. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Hey Norm, great seeing you again. Wow what an eye opener, I started looking into visas seriously just recently. Currently I'm in University doing a Bachelor of Arts degree, and aim to move to Japan after. I am planning on going through JET, but this info has helped massively. I know JET is not always a solid route to take, and especially when my partner will be coming too who, although has a degree too, doesn't speak a word to Japanese. So thank you so much for this. I will take the advise and invest in an immigration lawyer for my journey to Japan. ありがとうございます。
(Almost) every single foreigner I've met in Japan is here on either a work visa (teaching English) or a spousal visa. Obviously, the spousal visa is the best since it allows you to pretty much do whatever the heck you want (professionally, that is), as if you were a regular Japanese national. Of course, you have to have the Japanese to back the up, so that's something else to consider. The best English teaching gig is arguably a professor, but that requires a minimum of a master's degree (but this is a requirement of the schools, not the government). Every once in a while, I'll meet an engineer or scientists or some other random profession, but it seems like these types are never here for very long and have little (or no) interest in Japan.
Interesting I’ve met a few of those but not the majority A lot of people on permanent residence And the majority probably on visas sponsored through a major company like a financial institution, a TV station or movie studio, with a few on performers visas, and the rare handful that run their own companies
@@TokyoLens Cool... I have yet to meet anyone in the creative field. It's a shame, too. But now that you mention it, it does seem like I run into a lot of business owners. Anyway, cool video. Thanks for sharing!
This was a super informative video! Thanks to both you and Miwa-san for taking the time to put it together so clearly and concisely. Moving to Japan has always been a dream of mine and this year I finally bit the bullet and went back to school to get my BA so I can make it happen. Hoping to get that permanent residence someday, but first I gotta deal with the visa song and dance. Wish me luck!
I know I could find a lot of this elsewhere online, but all the information was presented so clearly and concisely in this video, I’d rather just watch you both talk about it. You had such great questions as well, Norm!
Hi Norm, good to hear from you. Glad to have some things cleared up and the business visa sounds really enticing. Hope Japan recognises there are many foreigners who would love to live there and contribute to their society and uphold (the best parts) of their culture.
The investment and office space are for sure When Miwa and I talked about it, it didn’t seem like the employees on payroll was part of it though. Do you have a link?
Honestly, even if the sponsor part seems tough, just the guidance and explanation of the clear paths to take is really helpful! I will take these aspects in mind, not for a student visa since I very well cannot support myself financially right now haha, so might try with a work visa at one point in the future for sure!
No plans to visit Japan. Your videos are giving me the opportunity to see it. Love the rooftop and travel videos. Be safe. Stay healthy.

Thanks for doing this, Norm. I’ve been looking into this for a few years now, but these were some of the best answers I’ve gotten. Great video, and thanks again.
Wow, really, THANK YOU for this video! You don't get to hear things from an actual expert everday, so this is great! I sure did learn a lot and this knowledge might come in handy in the future :D
I want to come and work in Japan so badly. My dream is to work on VR games and work in the gaming industry in general, so videos like this one is very informative and insightful. I am studying Japanese on my own, but I'm hoping to take some college classes soon for it. Thanks Norm for the vid!!
Great video! Props to her for talking to you about the different visas, there's a lot of pressure on lawyers when they give out information to the public. As a law student its one of those things that gets drilled into you that you have to be careful at all times.
Love your work sir, both the informational video's such as this and the artistic ones. Thank you for everything you do. You always seem like a nice guy.
Hey Norm, thanks for the info. It would be good to know some basics about retiring in Japan. I'll check out the Lawyer website and maybe drop them a line. Keep up the great work.
Timely topic for a future video - What if you have a US-based business that's 100% virtual, or you work virtually for a US-based company, and you'd like to live in Japan?
Same, also for a student wanting to work in Japan. The embassy in my country doesn't have the JET Program because our first language is Spanish not English, as for a scholarship you have to be in certain type of universities. So for me getting a job visa would be the option although i see it very difficult because I don't have experience on the field I'm working in and also I'm still studying 😅
Not fully related to this video, but it made me think of this: I would love to do a work related trip to Japan as a separate trip to a tourist trip. I would in the emergency management field (currently with Hurricane Ian recovery in Florida) and I think learning more about Japan's different responses, preparations, and risk mitigation for different disaster types would be awesome as the county is in a unique geographical location that puts it at risk of some many different types of disasters.
Thank you for this video! This gave me a good idea of what to expect in the future. My dream is to work in Japan as an automotive technician. I was worried about the education requirements, but it seems Japan has a similar standing for skilled labor roles as my home country. I think once I have 10+ years of experience and certifications, I will be able to move to Japan.
Finally watched this and thank you. I was lucky enough to be a military husband, and I fell in love with Japan. I would like to return to live someday soon. this may help!
What excellent timing! I've actually been trying to do some research on this exact topic and your video came up at just the right time. Thank you and Kanesaki-san for all the information.
Hi Norm, glad to see you back , I am still looking for the secret in the last video jogging around the Tokyo tower Any clues🤗 Update, found it, watched it all over again ,you should definitely do more of this in your regular videos , it's like hearing the voice in your head. Thanks for posting this details on work visas.
Nice informative vid. I took the popular route of an instructor visa for teaching english (which does require a degree of some kind). The process was pretty straight forward but thats probably because my employer does it for hundreds of new teachers every year. I imagine they did most of the legal heavy lifting and just sent me the papers to sign. Although everyones condition will be different so videos like this and any other research you can do is recommended. And it never hurts to check with a professional like you did here.
Interesting video Norm! I'm a third year engineering student, and I'm actually in the progress of getting a work visa with an employer for an 8 month paid intern in Japan. Luckily for me most of the hard work is being done from my employer. Ill let you know how it all goes once everything gets going and how long the process was for me.

I just started a new school. It's a culinary school focusing on Asian/Japanese cuisine. I went to school in the states for culinary arts, but didn't have much Asian cuisine training, which is why I came to Japan. After language school, I chose this school for it's focus on prepping students for a 5 year Culinary visa. But now I'm afraid that after this visa has expired, I may not be able to extend my visa because it is expected that I spread japanese cuisine to my home country afterwards... I hope that's not true...
