It’s easy to get around Chicago without a car. Here are my five favorites ways, and the apps that make transportation in the Windy City a breeze.
Be sure to visit lizzyfay.com/ for more information and advice about Chicago! Thanks to Ismael Cossyleon for help shooting this video.
    Apps
    • Ventra - For the L trains and buses.
    • Via - On-demand car service.
    • Uber - On-demand car service.
    • SpotHero - Discounted parking
    • ParkWhiz - Discounted parking
    • Google Maps - Helpful for direction on L trains
    1. The L
This stand for “elevated train.” Chicago has 144 rail stations throughout the city, and they are relatively easy to navigate - especially with help from Google Maps. I’m a big fan of using the L to beat traffic.
    a. Cost: $2.25 per ride. It’s cheaper if you get a pass.
    b. Pro Tip: If you are coming from O’hare, the Blue Line will take you right downtown. Take the Orange Line if you’re coming from Midway Airport.
    2. Water Taxi
During the warm months, you can cruise to many of the city’s top tourist spots by boat. The Chicago Water Taxi or Shoreline Water Taxi will take you to places like Michigan Avenue, China Town, and the Museum Campus. You’ll take in beautiful views of Chicago’s architecture along the way.
    a. Cost: $10 day passes are available.
    b. Pro Tip: Go at sunset for a spectacular view.
    3. On-Demand Car Service
Download the Uber and Via apps to order a car on-demand. Prices are cheaper than a taxi, and it’s super convenient. Via offers black car service throughout downtown for a flat fee of $3.95, although there’s a chance you’ll be carpooling with someone headed in the same direction. ** 2018 update: Via now offers rides in all cars (not just black) and different price points. Still an affordable option!
    a. Pro Tip: If you’re taking Uber from the airport, go to the designated ride-sharing pickup area. At Midway, it’s the Departures level at door UL1. At O’Hare, it’s upstairs at Departures.
*Note Via now offers standard car service and private rides. It is not limited to shared black cars.
    b. Tip 2: Use a promo code to ride for free (see mine at the end), and then share your own code with friends to rack up free rides.
    4. Bike
Rent a bike and ride around the city. Take advantages of Chicago’s 18-mile lakefront trail that goes to the Museum Campus. The new 606 path is a popular place to bike as well. Check out routes here: ChicagocompleteStreets.org. Bike rentals: Divvy or Bike and Roll.
    a. Cost: $10-$36.
    b. Tip: Bike and Roll offers helmets, Divvy does not.
    5. Walk
Chicago is a walkable city, so get outside and explore! The new Riverwalk is a great place to start.
    a. Pro Tip: Use Google Map’s walking tab for directions by foot.
    6. Parking
Download the ParkWhiz or SpotHero apps. They’ll locate available parking spots for you at a discounted rate. Use a promo code (mine is below) for even greater savings.
Pro Tip: Stick to #1-5. Bringing a car downtown is unnecessary.
    My Promo Codes
You can likely find promo codes online, but feel free to use mine and we’ll both get credits. Teamwork! (High five)
    • Uber - Type “uberLizFay” in the app for $15 off your first ride.
    • Via - Type “elizabeth4y4” in the app for $10 off your first ride.
    • SpotHero - Sign up through refer.spothero.com/s/Lizzy for $7 off.
    • ParkWhiz - Sign up through ssqt.co/m5eej1c for $5 off.

Great suggestions on ways to get around. I live up in the far north side (Edgewater) and the buses are great for quick ways to get downtown. They actually become faster than the train because they run express. And that Ventura Pass, also works on the Pace system which can get city goers out to suburbs like Schaumburg for some shopping at Woodfield Mall.

Good tips. We were just in Chicago. It seems like Lyft and Uber prices were really high. We took an Uber from the Hancock tower down to the Chicago river and it was 12 bucks(for about 1 1/2 ride). It will take you more time but the L is an affordable way to get to either airport. If you're going from downtown the Red Line is the way to get to Wrigley. Still if we had to do it again I think we would ride a Divvy bike to the Wrigely from downtown. One thing about the L is I thought it wasn't the nicest subway compared to NYC, Atlanta, London, or Paris. Downtown Chicago is very walkable too.

Atlanta, Miami , Washington DC and Philadelphia are among famous US cities that are more dangerous than Chicago.

#1. Train is fastest. More on time. But beware of poop cars and homeless.
#2. Buses cover more grounds. Safer. But buses are never on time, and slow. Take advantage of the Express routes!
#3. Water Taxis/Divvy Bikes. These are over priced and limited. But excellent for a cheap/free tourist experience.
#4. Uber/Lyft. If money isnt an issue, these are the way to go, if you aren't driving.
#5. Walking around is a great idea.
PS. No matter what, don't compare out public transportations to Asia's. Fares are not subsidized by our government. Many of our infrastructure is outdated. Most riders are middle-lower class riders. Expensive, old, un posh rides, so don't be culture shocked, please.

Planning a trip to Chicago in the Spring, is Uber and Lyft very expensive there? I notice you said if money isn't an issue.

Your stays about CTA ridership are completely out of touch with reality. CTA still does a random digit dial Customer Satisfaction Survey of the whole region that indicates that 3/4 or so of CTA customers choose to use CTA for their commute even though they have/can afford to drive in instead. While no service is perfect, a very large share of CTA customers are very satisfied and very likely to continue using CTA and very willing to recommend using CTA to friends families and coworkers.
I think that given CTA and Pace’s massive service levels, those planning trips should use the travel apps that take CTA schedules with real time service delay info into account. Don’t shy away from buses to make trips within the SuperLoop (12th Street/Roosevelt to North Avenue and the Lake to Halsted Street). Going from the South Loop to Water Tower place can be done very quickly.

PeterJames Foote yes, you are quoting from those who actually ride CTA. But most Chicagoeans do not rely on CTA as their sole transport medium. They either still own cars or take rideshares. Unlike Asia, where many don’t even have cars, because the public transportation is more cost efficient and reliable.

Great video, where can I catch the L train ?

    • @LizzyFay
      @LizzyFay  6 лет назад +1

Here is a map. The L goes all over Chicago, and if you're downtown or near any of the tourist spots, you're likely close to the L. www.transitchicago.com/assets/1/maps/ctamap_Lsystem-light.pdf

    • @LizzyFay
      @LizzyFay  6 лет назад

But I just use Google Maps. Type in where you want to go, and then click the "transit" icon, and it will tell you which line & stop to take.

You had me and then you lost me. In fact, the bus network in Chicago is one of the most reliable and easy to use in the entire U.S. The bus routes are also on Google Maps and you can use the same Ventra card on them that you use for the subways! In fact, if you if you are a tourist, just pay $10 for unlimited bus and subway rides and hop on and hop off the entire system! Don't needlessly pay for expensive Uber rides. Sheesh!

Buses are the easiest way to travel... They literally go up and down one street each..

    • @LizzyFay
      @LizzyFay  7 лет назад +5

Jake Swinford Yes, but in my opinion, it'd be easy for someone who is not familiar with the streets to miss their stop. Sometimes the street names are not displayed. That's why, I think it's easier to take an Uber over the bus so tourists get dropped off right at their destination. Buses are fine, but Uber is easier in my opinion.
