Thanks for your kind words about Chicago. It really pisses me off that people think it’s so dangerous here. I’ve been here my entire 30 years and I’ve never even once felt like I was in any immediate danger. There are very small areas of the city that have issues but overall Chicago is safe for a large city. We’re just an easy target for the media because we have liberal leadership pretty much from top to bottom but the numbers don’t support all the bad press.
Well I’ve been on the south side of Chicago my entire life, family has been here for over 100 years. You are either a liar or living in fantasy land. In 2017 Chicago set a city record for carjackings with about 930. Typically in the last decade or so the city would have about 350 or so. That number was shattered in 2020 with 1,300. In the first 5 weeks or so of 2021 there were around 200 carjackings. Very few perpetrators are caught or prosecuted. There are routine shootings on expressways now with people shooting at each other Mad Max style while driving. Last I checked there were close to 70 expressway shootings. As of last year, the overall homicide clearance rate was about 12%. I know Chicago Police officers that tell out of state family and friends to stay away. I am old enough to remember the crack fueled gang wars of the late 80’s and early 90’s. The city was more violent then but the violence was largely isolated to projects and the immediate areas. Now the violence is all over. You never saw shootings downtown or in river north. Then there are the frequent smash and grabs and groups of south side teens terrorizing the lakefront and Michigan Ave. That didn’t happen before either. There was a brawl in Neiman Marcus where several illegal handguns were seized from the perpetrators. Then there is the terrorizing of Chinatown. Ever since shuttle busses started taking Chinatown passengers to and from NW Indiana and SW Michigan casinos 20 years ago a certain demographic responsible for most of the other crime have been terrorizing Chinatown and the area around Chinatown. Elderly men an women beaten and robbed. Women carjacked. This is frequent, underreported and only getting worse. I could keep going. You would be shocked what doesn’t make it to the local news or what is going on every day throughout the city. I have talked to gangbangers, drug dealers big and small, city workers, county workers and state workers. Try to imagine the connections my family has made being in relatively one location for over a century. You have seen them on the news and probably depicted in a movie or two. Some government employees refuse to go into certain neighborhoods without a police escort. I plan on getting out of here and moving to NW Indiana. The city is already dead, some just don’t realize it yet. There are several reasons but the primary is the unfunded city pensions. They can kick the can down the road and raise taxes for only so long. Eventually the politicians will have to drastically overhaul and cut pensions which would probably be political suicide or the city will have to file bankruptcy.
