    I ended up buying a few 72hr Tokyo Metro Passes when I was over last year. Much much cheaper than a Suica as the latter does not have a daily cap (unlike London etc). I did use the Suica for all conbini purchases tho..and some non-metro journeys so definitely worth getting!

    As an addendum to this video, not all train stations support IC cards. For example, in Hokkaido, only train stations in Sapporo, Chitose, and Otaru are equipped with IC card machines. For other cities such as Hakodate, Yoichi, and Niseko, you will need to buy regular tickets.

    • @kc3302
      @kc3302 9 месяцев назад

      IC cards are for local travel in urban areas. Hakodate has a small IC valid area. For longer distance travel, including travel between 2 cities which accept IC cards, you need to buy paper tickets or passes.

    Hi, your videos have been very helpful. Many thanks for sharing.
    I usually book my Shinkansen tickets on JR East. They only allow the tickets departing and arriving from the station of the Shinkansen journey. My question is what happens if I need to transfer to a local line after arriving at the Shinkansen station, without having to go out and in again at the ticket gate.
    Eg. I wish to go from Tokyo to Matsushimakaigan. I purchase the base and reservation seat tickets from JR East website from Tokyo to Sendai. How do I transfer to the local line (without a paper ticket) from Sendai to Matsushimkaigan?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @ONEGOODDREAM
      @ONEGOODDREAM  3 дня назад

      Hi! Thank you so much for watching! 🙏 if you can link the shinkansen ticket onto your Suica card, you can transfer to the local line with the same Suica card used to board the Shinkansen, you don't need a separate ticket. so just tap and go with the Suica at all the ticket gates. if you use a shinkansen paper ticket, you can transfer from the shinkansen to JR local lines by inserting the shinkansen paper ticket and tapping the suica card at (Sendai) shinkansen-to-JR gates. hope this helps..

    Thanks for an information dense but easy to understand video covering most of what foreign travellers need to navigate Japan’s sometimes confusing IC payments system.
    You touched on kids’ IC cards in the Shinkansen chapter near the end but left us wanting to know more.
    Namely, how does one buy a kids’ IC card? Does a guardian or parent need to attend a みどりの窓口 office with child in tow and some sort of identification for them? Are there kids’ IC cards available? What other sorts of restrictions or tips should families know?
    Enquiring minds need to know.

    I am in Tokyo. I got a Hello Kitty IC card and bought a 72 hour metro pass. The unlimited metro 72 hours pass is wonderful to travel within the 2 transit company. If it is outside of these 2 companies, I would use my Hello Kitty IC card. After using the subway, I feel like it is easy. As long as Google map provides the correct information. So far Google is correct 98% withe the route. The subway is like a maze. I love to use the unlimited pass because if I enter the incorrect bus routes I could go back out with no issue, but IC card will charge each time in and out.

    Thank you for the extra information. SUICA can be used as currency beyond transport which makes it good for making purchases without carrying money. With Department Stores taking SUICA, that means that amounts on the card can be large and with the refundable SUICA, that makes it easy. The non-refundable SUICA poses a problem: imagine having 5000 yen on it when you are at the airport to leave (and weight limits mean you cannot buy any more things). That is a lot of food and drinks to get the balance to zero before you give your money to JR East!
    With a ten-year card, the 5000 yen can sit until you travel again.. and you can still use it to buy things.
    It amazes me that 10-year SUICA are only sold in Tokyo, not the airports or neighbouring cities. It makes it difficult for those who want the card but are not planning to spend a lot of time in Tokyo. I suspect I will spend a day of my holiday hunting for a 10-year card as reports coming back from travellers suggest that 10-year cards are selling out fast.

    Yoko san. Thank you so much for this video. Since I'm arriving in Osaka, I'll have to get an Icoca card. And since the physical cards are in short supply, it is better for me to download the Icoca app, right? However, the Icoca card is a long term card, so I won't be able to get a refund as my journey ends in Tokyo.
    So, in summary, don't get a physical Icoca card unless I don't want a refund for the 500Yen.

      Hi! yes you're right! it's best if you could get an IC card on your smartphone (Icoca/Suica any card is fine, they work the same). and yes, don't get a physical Icoca card unless you don't want the refund since you won't be able to refund it in Tokyo.

    Probably not relevant but some IC cards that are issued in rural parts don’t work nationwide and only with a certain transportation system. For example in Kagawa there is the IRUCA card which works with the kotoden and their busses but not outside of Kagawa, however cards like the SUICA does work on the Kotoden so there is no reason to get it. Any card issued in one of the larger regions works nationwide but some cards issued in smaller regions may not. Fun trivia is that you depending on the region get a regional variant of a different card such as a Shikoku version of the ICOCA card.
