When GW had the Battle Bunker store in Memphis, literally next door to the warehouse, they shipped product from the warehouse to the Battle Bunker rather than just walk it next door or have a window they could pass it through.

I think you are just seeing the tip of the corporate waste iceberg. Every huge company does stupid stuff like this.

I thought of three things why they would do this, 1. This was already way behind and throwing money at the shipping was going to save a profit margin in the future, 2. I'm not sure how corporate taxes are done in the UK, but makes me wonder if they inflated a business cost to be able to save money on taxes i.e spend a million to ultimately save 5 million, 3. Use the artificially inflated shipping cost to justify a price hike in the future.

Color me shocked.
Having worked in shipping I can tell you on regular occasions we would re use boxes especially if it was going to a distrubtor or business rather than an end customer. In order to prevent confusion with the carrier (UPS) we would just slap a blank label over the old one as it looks a lot better than trying to tear off the old one. Likely the Memphis location received something from Nottingham and decided to simply reuse the box.
Maybe its a tactic they use to justify their overinflated prices on their mini's.
Something I just realized. These arrived in GW's Warehouse a week before the LVO previews on Jan 19th, 2024, so it could be they thought they would put these up for pre-order the following week after the reveal, so maybe that is why they shipped them so fast to the States? spikeybits.com/2024/01/plastic-perfection-new-solar-auxilia-kits-army-box-revealed.html
They would have to get more than a 20% discount on shipping to make this anywhere worth it because the math would mean they would barely break even. They probably have a negotiated contract at a set price.
If they sold everything at full price from through their own stores the most, they made was 1.68 million. Depending on how many were sent to local gaming stores they could have made as little as about 924,00 thousand.
This would have to be one hell of a screw up for them to basically break even on these box sets.
Don't they make up for the deficit by limited amount of boxes on release dates though. Literally selling out in a minute whilst having the audacity to make you que in line for 20 minutes . Duh ....
I see it this way . Imperialis is one of the sorse quality products GW made at the usual(high) GW price, on top if that in a lot if parts in the world it was impossible to order any expension boxes. How will l get new players for a new system where all l got fron GW is two starters and the two other stores in my city are in the same situation. The whole system was banking on prople buying stuff directly from GW . Well sadly for GW it was up against a 30 years plus recasting and 3d printing local industry that offers all w40k armies. In my part of the world (eastern europe) it had to die.
Hi UK 40K player here, I do know that the factory in Nottingham has just had a large refurbishment completed, I also know they have been behind on manufacturing for a while (redeemer and crusader land raiders have been out of stock in Europe for a few weeks)
So my theory is these were manufactured late due the the refurbishment and had to be shipped quickly to the US for launch (this isn't normally a thing for the US as GW has an American based factory for US stocks but limited edition boxes are still produced in the UK to save money especially on specialist games like heresy, necromunder, legions imperials etc
Thanks for that, so keep in mind the only GW "factory" is in Nottingham. They pulled the injection molding machines out of America in 2013, after moving them from Baltimore around 2008. This is however, a very big warehouse still here in the States for Games Workshop.
You are forgeting volume pricing. They may of got a major discount. It cost them less to ship via air. Also, they get express costumes with air. That is often enough to use air. It takes less time to get it thru costumes much quicker with air.
Good Lord! This should see prices getting another hike to claw back all that wasted moolah.

I kind of feel that Old World is another waste of resources and the community money. Don't get me wrong. I would love to collect Tomb Kings because that was the army that got me into the hobby. However, how much support will the game have in tournament play and locally. It seems that Old World is competing with AoS. So which game is going to get the most support?
Old-world is a low resource project. Very few extra builds. One main rule developer. It's pretty popular though.
Two different departments at GW, main vs. specialist games. Both with their own resources, accounting books, etc. It's believed that is why some armies will not be coming to the Old World as they are used in AOS and vice versa. Beastmen being retired from AOS is another rumor I've heard since they will be an upcoming old world army release. We saw the same with Cities of Sigmar last year as they retired a lot of dwarf, empire, and elf units.
Def sounds like wasteful spending. They can do regular shipping and just pass the savings to the customers. But what do I know.

I work at UPS as a driver. To ship that box without shipping incentive brackets for output would cost 100 minimum 500 maximum. GW because we ship all their stuff probably is in a discount bracket based on how much volume they put out so for them it wouldn't be as expensive as it would be if you walked into a UPS store.
