  • McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, Alaska, June 2018. This sequence features the female adult brown bear named “Waterfalls”. She is one of the largest and highest-ranking females at McNeil. Beyond that, she is a particular favorite of ours. We filmed Waterfalls on our first visit to McNeil in 2007. She had two second summer cubs at the time and was so very tolerant of our presence. In subsequent visits we have sometimes had short glimpses of her. But on our most recent visit we had some great encounters. Waterfalls is likely beyond the age where she can have cubs but she still commands great respect. Here are some views of Waterfalls seeking and capturing red salmon in Mikfik Creek.

    I have great respect for wildlife and people that record this but it’s scary to me

    So close you can hear their foot steps... I’d be too scared to be that close. Awesome footage. Please be careful.

    I wish you guys did live camera's too like Brooks Falls

      I am just an individual filmmaker but live cams have been attempted at McNeil in the past. One issue is that McNeil is a more remote area than Brooks and transmission of live video is a real problem. Plus the live systems require frequent human maintenance, and human numbers and behavior protocols with respect to bears at McNeil are different from Brooks. Plus there are only ever three staff people at McNeil, at most, and guiding and other duties take all their time.

    Great video. Super detailed. How close were you? I also like hearing the splashing water and the background gulls

      Hi guys! In some of the clips of Waterfalls here I would estimate she was a s close a - feet. Others farther away. Bears can approach closer than that at McNeil. I have had instances where they almost bumped my tripod... When I am in other bear habitats I don't let them approach that close.

    When I watch this I can’t help but think of Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend how they thought they were safe

    • @babyleon
      @babyleon  2 года назад +1

      Treadwell made a series of bad decisions which, when added to his simplistic and dangerous assumptions of bear-human interactions resulted in his, his girlfriend and several bears deaths. Of course, anything can happen with a large wild animal but the risks are reduced dramatically with certain protocols and other measures. In more than 50years of operations, McNeil has never had any injuries from bears to the human viewers. And the density at McNeil can be way more than the area of Katmai where Treadwell operated. He pushed the odds for a long time and it caught up with him.
