Bears are pretty intelligent animals. It's likely it approached the man out of curiosity, it didn't seem to have hostile intent.

Bears do not eat humans unless if they are starved. Given there is a river full of salmon, I really doubt the bear would attack him unless it felt threatened.

Cooper Landing the bears would fish in the river. The smart ones would collect a fish tax from the humans fishing. They completely ignored us and focused on getting the salmon.

Coastal bear. Those bears love them some salmon. They eat them all day. They really don't attack humans because they have tons of fish to eat
The bears were having an all-you-can-eat buffet. They were very full and became pretty lazy and sleepy. They were not going fight anyone for anything at that moment, because they are bears not men.
That would be an adrenaline rush like no other. One swipe to your face, and you're done. Bears are quick and unpredictable.
