I gave seen it many many tomes over the years and still see certain parts I didn't see the first time. I had read the book when it came out, I couldn't put it down, it was the best. I heard before they made the movie that Marlon Brando was going to be Don Corelone and I, being a big Brando fan for years I was intrigued but suspect. Then I sa the movie, I was hooked, Marlon Brando in his best role ever. The entire cast was excellent, evrry single person was awesome. Aside from some action, the movie's greatness is found in the characterizations (the actors) & their dialogue. That's it. Little special effects. Nothing bombastic or pretentious. A minimum of violence is used only where necessary. But the dialogue, ah the dialogue -- the expressions on faces -- the tension & conflict -- made this film (story) great.

Then Michael calls out Moe for hitting his brother in public which showed no respect for the family…then Fredo defends Moe for hitting him and then tried to work with Tom to convince the Godfather to prevent Michael from buying out Moe. Michael had no choice to take out Fredo since he was a liability who would get you killed or ended up in jail…which Fredo almost did in the Godfather Part 2.

You notice that when Moe spoke to Tom, he kinda looked down and away. Like Clemenza and Tessio in the novel, Tom knew that Moe was a dead man. In my opinion, Moe was dead even if he was bought out. Of course, the Corleones knew he would not agree. Vito said in the novel that Moe wasn't a man he wanted to meet with.

"I talked to Barzini".... I wonder why they had to dub over. Was there a different original line, or just audio issues?

Moe slapped Fredo around because he was no longer beholden to Don Corleone. He was making a deal with Don Barzini as Michael ferreted out of him during this meeting. Michael was giving Moe an out by letting the Corleone's buy him out or he might get a bullet in his eye while getting a massage. We all know which path Moe chose.
