An original Maude Lewis painting can set you back as much as 10 grand, quite possibly more. US presidents have paintings by her. And in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia contains her house, her whole house, and every inch of it, inside & out, is painted in her hand.
This was a good film with fantastic performances by both leads. But they definitely glossed over how difficult and miserable her life really was. Maude lived in constant pain, and if you think the film version of Everett was portrayed as abusive. That was nothing compared to how bad he was in real life. He was horribly controlling and violent towards Maude their entire relationship. It was far from a love story. Her misery was hidden behind her bright and joyful art. He worked her like a dog producing well over 3000 paintings to sell. Nine years after Maude passed away Everett was murdered in their little house by a burglar. The daughter had tried to reconnect with Maude whilst she was still alive but Maude refused to acknowledge her. It's thought that she did this to protect her from Everett who was well known locally for being a lecherous pervert.
I'm sure even if she was dirt poor, her paintings that she made from scratch were what brought wealth into her life. Not money wise, but peace of mind.
And then years after she died, he was murdered in his home. Those thinking he had loads of money hidden in the shack. Truly a sad life story for both. Yet her simple pleasure in painting anything and everything with what surrounded her, filled her with ‘something’ amongst her very hard and abused life. I love visiting the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia where her actual home now resides.
Wow, is that real? Is it online? If so, what a tragedy for both of them. I'm an old grizzly bloke, but my heart broke at her very difficult life, and abuse from her husband. It never ceases to amaze me at the strength of people with a disability. God love and bless them.
If that's all true. That breaks my heart. The level of hardship she faced. I wonder how she react if she was here today and saw how she was remembered. And how much worth her painting are
My old freind Tillie (Porter Antiques between Mahone Bay & Chester) had a sixth sense about collectibles way before other people. As a result, she knew Maude and collected her work. Also collected decoys really early & a beautiful book was created as a result. Milk glass, all sorts of beautiful things. I refinished & repaired pine furniture for her & we became good friends. Every time I see such a program it brings back thoughts of my old freind, gone now for some years. The movie about Maudie was much romanticized. Her life was HARD, she was in a lot of pain as time went on but still her talent progressed. Amazing that with so much against her she forged forward. Today, we see people with lives of ease & they willingly throw it away.
It is extraordinary what people can do against all odds, the light can shine through! Movies do tend to romanticize. I wanted to respond to your concluding comment ‘Today, we see people with lives of ease & they willingly throw it away.’ Not sure what the comment is based on - it’s a pretty intense comment! From my perspective, a very large part of the people alive today are carrying heavy intergenerational unprocessed pain and trauma - some of it may or may not be not visible from the outside but on the inside, the path is full of darkness, shadow, pain, suffering, despair and heartbreak - many struggle hard on these paths and those who succeed are deepening the roots of healing, growth, faith, mercy and grace - a lot going on that’s not always easy to see :) take good care!
I disagree about the movie being romanticised, I was able to feel the harshness of Maud's reality and the pain she went through, even though much was left unsaid in the movie. I think the director and the actors did a fantastic job!
I now know why Ethan Hawke wanted to do this movie so bad. I cried half of this shortened version. thank you as now I do not have to watch it and cry more. cheers.
I am heartbroken by all the suffering she, but speaking in broad terms, a lot of people have to endure. Not life normal suffering, but that one which is caused by the evil within other people that simply cannot live without causing others harm. And STDs.😔
Soooo…he’s abusive but it’s cool because he changed overnight when HE decides to and this is a love story…
Damaged people have difficulty expressing affection.
Years ago. Things were tough.
Some people don't ever get that redemption arc. They stay abusive.
This movie and the crying women in the comment section explain certain female choices and their inability to spot abusers.
Horrible.
It's called redemption!
😢 thanks for the movie that was beautiful that was a good one touched me real deep

I saw this movie and wow it was an amazing and beautiful story.
Awe such a wonderful sweet movie
Beautiful loved it
This is a beautiful story. Hard life, however it shows two people who grew to love each other. It's not how the story started, it how it ended that is important. Grits, determination, sacrifice, duty, going through the bad times eventually you may create a life. At the end she knew she was loved by him and he knew she loved him and enhanced his life tremendously.
I believe this is based on a true story.

This movie is a how-to turn abusive relationships into romantic movies.
I love this actress. Also in Shape of the Water.
