      I’m mixed, black and white. People always believe that no one would want a mixed race wife. Many did. My family history is proof of that. Was it difficult? Absolutely! However, with money and a respectful family backing? Many men would in those times.

    I love that Elizabeth never turned on her Black sister, Dido, in a society, that tells her she is better and afforded more opportunity. Elizabeth saw and treated Dido as her equal and protected her, never making her feel "less than". I fully expected the storyline to have them turn on one another in that societal class and racial divide, but I was pleasantly surprised and touched when they didn't. ❤️❤️

      Maybe when they were kids as most kids don't see colour. But as they grew up she felt she was superior because of what the society was like. But soon she found money was also her problem. But it was Dido who was willing to give her some of hers without any terms or conditions.

      Just an FYI. This is a true story so the main "storyline" stuck to actual events. Elizabeth at one point did treat her cousin Dido unfairly, but they eventually made up. Though not to the same extent as Dido, Elizabeth faced prejudice in the marriage market for not having enough money.

      This movie was heavily romanticized. He loved his daughter but there is still questions of whether or not he loved her mother. Some people say he set her up in a house in Florida and some people say that he never did such a thing and sold her instead. Didos mother was a West Indies slave so why would he set her up in a house in Florida???

    • @siewheilou399
      @siewheilou399 Год назад +20

      Did her mother died? Was her mother his slave or did he just rented her for a few nights? Then the true owner informed him that the girl he rented had given birth to a baby girl, asking him would he like to buy that baby girl? And maybe it was just followed by a series of serendipitous events, that somehow this man actually accumulated a substantial amount of money, and he actually had it registered that Dido was his daughter, so by default she inherited his money. The fact that he did not see much of her is a hint.

      This is the Hollywood version, so we viewers really don't know if the slaver truly loved his slave. But, it was very common for slavers to father children with their slaves in that time and it didn't always mean "love". Hollywood put a spin on it no doubt.

While, Dido father died in 1788 & left Dido nothing. the fact that Lord Mansfield make sure Lady Elizabeth inherited £40,000 and Dido got £500 also very telling. This movie did the real life of Dido a grave injustice, and needs to be remade in a way that truly reflects her life and the indignities she suffered. It's a disgrace and a derelection of responsibility to portray a true historical figure, especially one of rare mixed parentage in this time period, so untruthfully. I advise everyone to read the Wikipedia about Dido. The real Dido was not loved equally by her family. She was not left any inheritance by her father, and Lord Mansfield left her very little on his death, barely enough to afford a servant of her own. No good marriage was secured for her. She was treated very well in comparison to other children of slaves, but if you read the real history, it becomes apparent that she was still treated as lesser than. She deserved that story of her life to be told truthfully.

    I love that art has imitated life. It sounds like an endearing story. My heritage involves a Royal Erejuwa 1 who lived in the 18th Century and set up court in Portugal and Nigeria. He married a Portuguese noblewoman. He was from the Warri Kingdom which also experienced exploitatation of its people sold as slaves by our African ancestors (to my shame, my family included).
    The subject of discrimination is never easy but what breaks barriers is understanding which enlightens. I hope the movie expresses this without fear of smothering the truth.

      the movie is fake! how tf can she go around meeting people as mansfield's niece when irl she wasn't even acknowledged or allowed to go anywhere like Lady Elizabeth, she was also broke!, john daviniere was a male servant not a lawyer! so none of the plot in this movie can ever happened ever so 100% fake.
      good part??? Dido was 32 when Lord Mansfield died, then she got married to a servant, but she considered spinster and beyond marriagable age.
      he left Dido £500 and £100 annuity, while he left Elizabeth £10,000 + her aunt inheritance £22,000 = £30,000. in Mansfield original will he never intended Dido to have the £500 just the £100 annuity, Elizabeth was always intended to have £10,000.
      mind you elizabeth was gone and married off very early while Dido was made to take care of Lord Mansfield until he died, after all that she still got like less than Lydia Bennett in P&P... mind you Lord Mansfield was just outside 100 richest man in England.. his annual income was said to be £25,000- £40,000 a year! 🤡💀while Mr Bennett nowhere near the richest and still left Lydia bennet £1000 and £100 a year.
      left good part? it's not good and I can't explain her entire life in 1 short comment

      this movie is 100% fake dido was left nothing by her father, again the african director faked her wealth and then movie plot revolve around finding suitable husband with her faked wealth, they also made Lady Elizabeth poor which couldn't be more false. in real life Lady Elizabeth marry the heir of Earldom of Winchilsea, at 25 yo and leave kenwood, dido stayed until lord mansfield's death and then at 31 married john daviniere
      john daviniere was a servant/valet usually a man in his position would marry a maid, he remarry later to white girl

    Wow-I forgot that Matthew Goode of Downton Abbey and A Discovery of Witches was Belle’s father in the first few minutes.
