I Love that in this era that her father acknowledged his child and just went and took his child out of slavery and brought her straight home forsaking all else, standing up for her and what he loves
powerful and a hard thing to do at that time
I truly believe that in that period of time it may have been hard, but not impossible when you love somebody no matter who they are or what color they are and truly love them, you will fight for them, so much more could have been done back then if just one person stood up and step forward, could you imagine the lives that would have been saved and spared pain cowards
@@tanyagaines3487 especially if u a true god lover
I’m mixed, black and white. People always believe that no one would want a mixed race wife. Many did. My family history is proof of that. Was it difficult? Absolutely! However, with money and a respectful family backing? Many men would in those times.
I love this movie , but it’s not factual!
The way Belle hit herself and clawed at her face broke my heart 💔. That's deeper than what anyone can imagine.
I thought I was the only one. 💓
Are you of any African country decent?
Are you immediately noticed as an "African American" by the police or neighbor?
@@jessicaclifton6829 yes I'm Jamaican 🇯🇲
✌🏾
Yeah that was sad and it’s crazy because she’s so pretty/dreamy
I love that Elizabeth never turned on her Black sister, Dido, in a society, that tells her she is better and afforded more opportunity. Elizabeth saw and treated Dido as her equal and protected her, never making her feel "less than". I fully expected the storyline to have them turn on one another in that societal class and racial divide, but I was pleasantly surprised and touched when they didn't. ❤️❤️
Elizabeth definitely tried Dido and Dido read her down. They eventually got back on good terms.
They were cousins not sister's.
Lolllll yeah she did. She literally told Dido she was illegitimate (bc she didn’t want to say black) and beneath the guy she liked so he wouldn’t touch her
Maybe when they were kids as most kids don't see colour. But as they grew up she felt she was superior because of what the society was like. But soon she found money was also her problem. But it was Dido who was willing to give her some of hers without any terms or conditions.
Just an FYI. This is a true story so the main "storyline" stuck to actual events. Elizabeth at one point did treat her cousin Dido unfairly, but they eventually made up. Though not to the same extent as Dido, Elizabeth faced prejudice in the marriage market for not having enough money.
I love the way Belle's father loved her mother, truly beautiful 😍
This movie was heavily romanticized. He loved his daughter but there is still questions of whether or not he loved her mother. Some people say he set her up in a house in Florida and some people say that he never did such a thing and sold her instead. Didos mother was a West Indies slave so why would he set her up in a house in Florida???
Did her mother died? Was her mother his slave or did he just rented her for a few nights? Then the true owner informed him that the girl he rented had given birth to a baby girl, asking him would he like to buy that baby girl? And maybe it was just followed by a series of serendipitous events, that somehow this man actually accumulated a substantial amount of money, and he actually had it registered that Dido was his daughter, so by default she inherited his money. The fact that he did not see much of her is a hint.
There are plenty of white people with black ancestry
I know a few who traded her DNA to Sudan..15% Sudanese
This is the Hollywood version, so we viewers really don't know if the slaver truly loved his slave. But, it was very common for slavers to father children with their slaves in that time and it didn't always mean "love". Hollywood put a spin on it no doubt.
What is the name of this movie
It's a shame how COLOR was/is a sin in the eyes of ignorance.
At that point in History, The French and Spanish hated each other and they both in turn hated the British. Everyone without exception hated one another and they did not need a reason. Look at the Irish and the Scotts, they still hate each other. And both hate the British
I understand why the father left Elizabeth with nothing. He knew that it would be easy for her to find a husband who will take care of her where dido would have no one. There weren’t black wealthy men around or men that would marry a black woman in their social circle
He wasnt elizabeths father
The two girls are cousins.
Didos father left her money after he died
Elizabeths father remarried, thats y he left her with his uncle.
Watch the movie ull understand.
I agree with you as well ,but at the same time maybe she may not have found anyone, I understand how he could want to ensure his daughter's future, but he should ensure both of his daughter's future in case neither of them ever found anyone, it should never matter about color they both are his children and now both of them have issues some seen in some unseen who he love more and it was him that made that question arise
Not true back then if you didn’t have money the men didn’t want you… you gotta watch the movie
@@tanyagaines3487 They weren't sisters,They were cousin with different fathers 😊

I loved this movie. Dido was described as a beautiful, kind and very witty and she lived a happy life with her husband and children. And to know that she was a real person who as beautiful inside and out who was brave and graceful made my heart glad. I cried at the end. As a mixed race child, this touched my heart. There are so many inspirational women of different races that should be know and Dido Bella was one of them

Elizabeth was the heiress who married first to rich man worth £20,000 a year in 1785 and left kenwood. While, Dido father died in 1788 & left Dido nothing. the fact that Lord Mansfield make sure Lady Elizabeth inherited £40,000 and Dido got £500 also very telling. (Dido's father rapd Dido's mom who was only 14yo slve at the time)
John daviniere was a servant not remotely abolitionist lawyer, he didn't even work at Kenwood.

Elizabeth was a real sister to Dido, never dropping ball on her.
in real life she was the heiress and loved by her rich father, Dido was broke and abandoned by her father, dido married a servant, Elizabeth married aristocrat twice richer than Mr Darcy
So what? Does he suppose to marry her for her money and just give her a pity poke when bored? That would destroy her. She is better off alone. Till she finds a grown man with a good head on his shoulders.
she has no money in real life
Having children out of wedlock, always has sad consequences for the kids. I am glad this worked out at the end
FALSE! MANY children born out of wedlock had great lives. MANY children born in wedlock had shit lives.
Talk about missing the point entirely: This movie has absolutely fvckall to do with "having children out of wedlock"
*used too. Not anymore, at least not everywhere.
This was not about having children out of wedlock.
I am not sure if she was born out of wedlock. His first wife might have died and he might have married the black wife in West Indies. That was why the biracial kid had his last name. This movie is about racial discrimination, not about out of wedlock children. I don't know where you live. At least in the US and Canada, it is no big deal if your parents are not married.
How wicked the European govt was, and how brainwashed and ignorant the European citizens were.
were?
Can you name EVERY "European citizen" you are alluding to?
They still are 😂
This is the norms at the time. Even in other parts of the world. Women were treated second class citizen. Although if u will trace back even in the Roman and Greek era, this was the kind of society that they have.
Don't ever forget that the slaves were SOLD to the Europeans by the Africans, so there is plenty of wickedness to go around.
I wish they portrayed more positive aspects of black history, not just slavery, but to be about veterans, doctors, innovators and inventors, and great people who changed the world with their minds. For example, Robert smalls, or Jimmy Hendricks or Loritta Rice
maybe if they ever go to make movie about black African in Africa it would... they always act like Europe is the only culture and continent in the world
Unfortunately, you aren't going to find any part of Africa untouched by slavery and colonialism. A lot of the ills Europe and England did are still present today.

I love this movie I purchased it from eBay over a year ago I love how Belle Father picks up for her and want her to be treated well
In real life Elizabeth was left with 10,000 pounds and dido was left with around 1,000. She married the family steward for security reasons after her aunt and uncle passed.
John Lindsey met and found Maria bell enslave on a Spanish ship at the age of 14 … he was 24 years old …. Let the sink in how so called great these men where ??
Bridgerton vibes🎉💖 marrying age is 10 years old
Wow. I want to feel sorry for Elizabeth but her plight is ordinary to what anyone might experience in an equal society ( with the exception of her being denied inheritance). Dido's mere existence and prospects were as if something to overcome. Great movie.
You are right, but just because one person suffers more doesn't mean the other doesn't suffer. It's like saying someone with a broken leg shouldn't complain because another person has lost their leg.
In the movie Elizabeth just had a moment of being human. When we hurt we only see that. She is a good person and it doesn't last long. That doesn't make it right, but it's just the way most humans are at one time or another. She loved Dido with all her heart and one moment of pain doesn't destroy that.

I loved this movie it showed how people are taught Racism. It's learned from family and friends or other people!
Those people who know nothing about the person. Just the color of their skin, religion, sex or money! To most people it's one or more of these things! It's been going on for years it's gotten a little better.
But we've still got a long ways to go! 🥺

The girl they used to play Dido is so pretty. I wonder what her name is
Her name is GuGu MaBatha-Raw.
Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha-Raw... that's her name😁
I agree with that 💯
This movie did the real life of Dido a grave injustice, and needs to be remade in a way that truly reflects her life and the indignities she suffered. It's a disgrace and a derelection of responsibility to portray a true historical figure, especially one of rare mixed parentage in this time period, so untruthfully. I advise everyone to read the Wikipedia about Dido. The real Dido was not loved equally by her family. She was not left any inheritance by her father, and Lord Mansfield left her very little on his death, barely enough to afford a servant of her own. No good marriage was secured for her. She was treated very well in comparison to other children of slaves, but if you read the real history, it becomes apparent that she was still treated as lesser than. She deserved that story of her life to be told truthfully.
A great moment in history showing the are people who value the equal right of others.
didn't happen
She is biracial and she is part White and Part Black,
Amazing account.
There are pictures of Belle at William Morris museum in Walthamstow, East London
Only a fool would choose not to see her beauty, or let other people's beliefs affect his own
I love that art has imitated life. It sounds like an endearing story. My heritage involves a Royal Erejuwa 1 who lived in the 18th Century and set up court in Portugal and Nigeria. He married a Portuguese noblewoman. He was from the Warri Kingdom which also experienced exploitatation of its people sold as slaves by our African ancestors (to my shame, my family included).
The subject of discrimination is never easy but what breaks barriers is understanding which enlightens. I hope the movie expresses this without fear of smothering the truth.

the movie is fake! how tf can she go around meeting people as mansfield's niece when irl she wasn't even acknowledged or allowed to go anywhere like Lady Elizabeth, she was also broke!, john daviniere was a male servant not a lawyer! so none of the plot in this movie can ever happened ever so 100% fake.
good part??? Dido was 32 when Lord Mansfield died, then she got married to a servant, but she considered spinster and beyond marriagable age.
he left Dido £500 and £100 annuity, while he left Elizabeth £10,000 + her aunt inheritance £22,000 = £30,000. in Mansfield original will he never intended Dido to have the £500 just the £100 annuity, Elizabeth was always intended to have £10,000.
mind you elizabeth was gone and married off very early while Dido was made to take care of Lord Mansfield until he died, after all that she still got like less than Lydia Bennett in P&P... mind you Lord Mansfield was just outside 100 richest man in England.. his annual income was said to be £25,000- £40,000 a year! 🤡💀while Mr Bennett nowhere near the richest and still left Lydia bennet £1000 and £100 a year.
left good part? it's not good and I can't explain her entire life in 1 short comment
Fantastic movie! I love this story!
not accurate
I adore this movie.
This movie is so cute and a true story
this movie is 100% fake dido was left nothing by her father, again the african director faked her wealth and then movie plot revolve around finding suitable husband with her faked wealth, they also made Lady Elizabeth poor which couldn't be more false. in real life Lady Elizabeth marry the heir of Earldom of Winchilsea, at 25 yo and leave kenwood, dido stayed until lord mansfield's death and then at 31 married john daviniere
john daviniere was a servant/valet usually a man in his position would marry a maid, he remarry later to white girl
This is Shonda Rhimes' Fantasy.
That man will forever be General Charles Cornwallis !!!
Wow-I forgot that Matthew Goode of Downton Abbey and A Discovery of Witches was Belle’s father in the first few minutes.
Ikr? He is damn fine
