Klopp only had to say it once, in one interview and people got the picture immediately, but howes mentioned it in multiple interviews, and people act like it's still achievable. For starters if Howe had even said he was interested, theres no chance the FA would pay the compensation needed to get him. Hes signed a new lucrative contract last season that was also put in place to protect Newcastle against this very situation. Southgate may not be very tactically astute but he was getting the results. He was a good guy, had a good relationship with the players and the players trusted him. This was Eng's golden period. However, this golden period had a lot to do with EPL becoming great post 2010 with all top teams playing continental style and Eng national players being able to hold the ball. In the 90s, EPL was very similar to Irish or Scottish league and yet broadcasters would falsely sell the narrative that EPL was 'the best league in the world'. Now, for the last 10-12 years, EPL has been the best league in the world.

But in his 4 tournament finals he had the luckiest progression route possibly of any manager in history (of any nation) and lost every single time he came up against a decent side.

    Greece won Euro 2004, winning games by the odd goal, playing pretty ordinary football, but playing to their strengths. England played Euro 2024 in similar style, but their players are used to playing in a more positive style for their clubs. Gareth Southgate has achieved more than every other England manager other than Alf Ramsey. They did score some of the best goals in the tournament but 8 goals in 7 games is not great. Starting Harry Kane in every game when he was never fully fit was a mistake. I think they will probably promote Lee Carsley in the short term, but I would try and persuade Jurgen Klopp somewhere in the future.

    Howe is the best English candidate (No chance Klopp or Pep!), but Howe is building something at Newcastle, so timing is off for him, he's young enough to have other opportunities for the ENG job.
    IDK what the ENG youth team is developing for 4-6 yrs time, but this current squad won't be around for ever, so there's probably 2 more tournaments for them to win something, which should be the same manager, meaning they have to get the appointment right, which they've failed to do since Robson and Venables.

    Howe is the obvious choice. When they talk about him winning things, not everything in football is about the physical lifting of a trophy. Getting Bournemouth from level four in the league to premier league regulars is way more impressive than winning league cups with Manchester United for example. Winning is over achieving by a considerable amount with a set of circumstances which would suggest what a manager goes on to achieve is highly unlikely. I would argue what Howe did at Bournemouth and then turning relegation fodder Newcastle into a top four team is a good enough achievement to warrant a crack at the England job.

    Southgate had a very long spell as England manager and didn't really make the most of the players we had. Due to some great club training facilities we currently have a very good crop of players. We have had some amazing luck in draws and some very big football nations have been weaker than usual but still couldn't win. The likes of Robson, Hoddle and Venables would have all done better with the current squad and it would have been more attractive football. I'm glad Southgate has gone and I think there are some good candidates in world football who could be persuaded to take it. The issue is the FA won't take a difficult character like Mourinho and others, just like they didn't offer it to Clough in the 70's.

  • @stephenbarden6121

    On the positive side,Gareth Southgate undoubtedly resurrected our interest in the national team. After Roy Hodgson's disastrous reign, Southgate made us all passionate for England to win that elusive major trophy; he deserves much credit for that. Nevertheless,the fact remains that England always played with the brakes on during his reign, and he certainly failed to get the best out of a tremendously talented group of players. In many ways, Southgate was a very typical England manager- cautious in the extreme, defensively minded, and muchmore worried about avoiding defeat than actually trying to win the game. It's indicative of England's perennial fear of the maverick, and the preference for the functional, average player, the "David Batty 40-odd caps, Matt Le Tissier 8 caps" scenario, if you like. An English version of Diego Maradona- personal issues and diva-like behaviour- would barely have got 10 international caps, if that.

    • @chucky7826
      @chucky7826 Месяц назад

      If David Batty was a functional average player then what is Declan Rice ffs. And Battys caps,to le tissier's, is a clueless comparison when they weren't competing for the same position

    • @stephenbarden6121
      @stephenbarden6121 Месяц назад

      @@chucky7826 The point I'm making isn't a straight position for position swap; I'm simply saying that England managers have consistently failed to get the best out of highly skilled players for decades, sometimes by mismanaging them, more often than not by not playing them at all. The fact is that players like David Batty, Carlton Palmer, etc,etc, are always seen as safe picks, whilst the Frank Worthington, Matt Le Tissier-type player is usually seen as a dangerous risk rather than an opportunity, a step too far. Was Gareth Southgate getting the best out of Phil Foden? Of course not.

If you were a supporter of any of the large supported clubs I cannot imagine you saying, yes. He is a championship level manager at best. With England he had easy pathways to succeed and he does not have the in game management required to win when he comes up against a decent team. I said decent as all the best European teams are not as strong as they were when Venables, Hoddle, Robson and Eriksen were the coach.
