Nice and simple. I was going to set up a dedicated VPN router on the home network. Even went out and purchased WRT3200ACM. Question: If you are going overseas, bring a router with you that is VPN compliant and set it to let's say the US (where you work), if you use your work laptop which has an installed work VPN, will they think you're in the foreign country or will they think you're in the US?
It depends on how you connect. Usually, on a laptop they'll use your IP address to verify your location, which a VPN can spoof. However, if you connect on your phone, it's much harder to spoof your GPS location, which a VPN cannot help you with. Make sense?
Thank you for the video, Josh. I have a question in regards to running dual VPNs. To work remotely, I have to access my company issued VPN on my laptop. If I also run a VPN on my router (my own personal VPN subscription), would I be able to successfully log into my work VPN and have it go through a second VPN in the router (to maintain geo location) without any issues? Anyone who can give insight.. it would be much appreciated. Thanks again!
Theoretically, if you're running the VPN through your router, it should work. I do know that some corporate VPNs don't allow for that kind of setup, though. If all else fails, you can set up the VPN on your router and then when you need to connect to your work VPN, use a guest WiFi that doens't have the VPN installed.
@Roland Safiyati It's been years but... For one, the firmware is locked to the ISP. A very limited feature set is usually made available to the small percentage of users who bother to check. The capacity of the router is generally less than any of the home-use routers too. Print sharing, External USB/NAS functions, MESH/extension support, router based VPN in or out, DDNS services... I'm sure there's more.
There are some WiFi routers that offer this capability, but for the average router, the best you can do is to setup a VPN on one network (i.e. the primary) and not on the other (i.e. the guest network) and then connect devices to one of the two based on whether you want them to run through a VPN or not.
I want to try this. I have a Comcast cable modem and a NightHawk router right now. I want to try to setup a second router and make that a dedicated VPN router.
Thanks! It depends on what router you use. This Asus router, for example, has a dedicated mobile phone app that does allow you to change your VPN connection, but not all of them will. The better the router ($$$), the more likely this is an option.
@@AllThingsSecured On my phone I access my router's back end by connecting to the router's WIFI then using a browser to navigate to the router. No app required.
I'm very new to routers and vpn's and have a question. I have this same Asus router and Nord VPN and just set it up tonight. Since I have a 2.4 and a 5.0 connection with the router, will both of these and the guest network be protected by Nord? And what's the difference between the 2 downloads to choose from (tcp and udp)? Is one better than the other? I'm not sure which one I did during set up. Thanks for your helpful video
Glad it was useful, Susan! UDP is supposed to be faster, but I honestly can’t tell a difference. Usually, a VPN setup will cover both your 2.4 and 5Ghz connections. As for the guest network, I think it depends on the router.
Thank you for your video. I own a TP-Link Deco M5, could you give me some advice. Not seeing a VPN option however, I was able to change Type to PPTP and use my expressvpn credentials for user, pass, and vpn server?! Thanks again..
A. Very nice video and very well explained. A quick question if I setup a VPN connection and divert all my traffic through VPN but at the same time I connect to my work VPN through pulse secure VPN on my laptop. Would that be ok because now I am connected to VPN twice one my own and one on my work laptop. Thanks in advance.
I HAVE A QUESTION: I currently have a work laptop and I would like to work remotely without my company knowing about it. I have been told that I need a VPN server ( raspberry pi) and a client VPN (travel router). I am not allowed to install anything on my work laptop so this is the only way. Does this video solve this solution or would you recommend something else? I just want to be able to work on my work laptop and be in another country without my company finding out about it. Please let me know how I can go about doing this. Thanks!
Connecting to your own VPN server would definitely solve part of the problem. Another issue to consider, though, is whether your employer uses GPS tracking on devices. A VPN won’t help you there.
Love this video!! Got one issue though. I purchased the router. Connected NordVPN and it works perfect. Issue I have is on the router Home Screen it shows Internet Status: Disconnected but the wifi is working. Why you think it says “Disconnected” when it’s connected? Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon.
I have an older Amped router. DD-WRT & Tomato are not supported. I will be buying an Ubiquiti Dream Machine this week. I will use the Amped as a bridge perhaps.
Excuse my ignorance but would this extra router be in place of my network router or run along side it? If so how is it connected? Also would I need to configure using 3G or does my original Wi-Fi router stay attached for the process? I live in Italy and want to watch UK and US tv on my tv instead of my computer or iPhone because I can’t seam to cast to my Apple TV from either... cheers, Jono
Hey Jono, great questions. The extra WiFi router would run alongside your network box and be connected by an ethernet cable. No need to configure using 3G or any settings in the original router.

Awesome, thanks! If I understand your question correctly, if you set up your router with a UK VPN configuration, then connect your Apple TV to that WiFi router, you *should* be able to stream those channels. If it doesn’t work, try a few different VPN configurations.
Hi. I think I understand what to do. I want to setup a mobile router with a VPN so I can connect to my work computer from Mexico. I live in USA and want to have a US IP while I am traveling. Sorry if this is a dumb question but, if I setup the VPN while Im in the US will the router have the US IP when Im down there? Thank you so much.
Hey, thanks very much for this great video. I have a Netgear router and it was very helpful in assisting me to find the VPN functionality on it. One question though: I use IPVanish and there are several servers that I can choose under each city. How do I select specific servers for, say, Chicago? The video looks like you can only choose one server for each location.
Thanks for the tutorial, very helpful! I’m moving to Romania later this year and planning to use a vpn. I’d like to use it through the router at home for security and streaming services (Netflix, Amazon, Disney). Would you recommend purchasing a router in the US beforehand and bringing it or purchasing something there? I’m leaning towards protonvpn for my service. Thanks for any advice.
To answer your question, I'd really want to know what kind of equipment is available to purchase in Romania. Can you contact someone who already lives there and ask? Otherwise, it might be best to just buy in the US and bring it with you. And ProtonVPN is a great service. I also love their ProtonMail service!
@@AllThingsSecured thanks for the reply. I asked around and it looks like most major brands are available and the internet there is very fast. I’ll reference your video again down the road for set up. Thanks for the help
I may have missed something super obvious but this is an additional router so does this now work as an extender and VPN? Because it's obviously not the actual source of the internet right?
Is there a way to use certain devices on the VPN? like just connecting a TV to the VPN but the rest of the devices don't. I believe that might be a capability of the router. Thanks for the video!
Some routers offer more capabilities than others. You could, for example, setup the primary network with a VPN and then leave the guest network as open.
Hi!, Great content!. I just bought an ASUS RT-AXA55 and i want to use it with vpn to travel and use public WiFi, any recommendation? I want to configure a VPNclient on it , and is it possible to use it as a repeater? or how can I connect it to a public wifi?. I really like your content.
I am concerned about being able to switch location easily, without having to activiate one and de-activate another. If I get a pre-flashed router, will that enable me to do that?
No, it won't. The best thing you can do is use a router similar to the ASUS one that I shared in this video. There's an app you can download for your phone that allows you to control the router instead of having to log in through your computer. Once you setup a few different VPN server location profiles, this would likely be the easiest way to switch locations. Make sense?
Great video. I followed all your steps, but when I clicked activate, the connection status just kept spinning and wouldn’t stop. Any idea why that would happen?
I'm looking to get a VPN service, but you suggested to purchase a router and not use my internet provider. What happens with my internet providers router?
I'm based in the Philippines and just bought an Asus RT-AC59U and subsribed to ExpressVPN. I tried following your instructions and created a Canada VPN profile but when I clicked on activate, it just loads and the connection status doesn't show the "check" icon. Do you know how to solve this?
Could be a number of problems. I would reset the router and try again. Then check to see if you're actually connected even though the check mark doesn't show (go to www.whatismyipaddress.com to find that out).
Let's say I have this private VPN which says it supports up to X amount of devices (I assume this works on a login basis). Would I be able to do this into that many (X) routers?
Hi there Josh, this has been very helpful, thanks for helping us newbies (especially us oldies!). I do have an issue though. While not on your list of recommend routers I bought an Asus RT-AX88U which I assume came out after you created this video. Your instructions on OpenVPN are crystal clear, I downloaded the configuration from the NordVPN server page, uploaded to the router. When I click to Activate from the VPN Server List however, I get the continuous wheel spinning under 'Connection Status' and no tick. I already updated the router's firmware and I have tried both Open VPN UDP and TCP downloads with this same result. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.
I was thinking to get an Asus router (currently using VPN via PC), but I was told you can only create ONE openVPN connection configuration at a time. If I want to change country I will need to disconnect + edit/delete the connection by installing the config file etc every time. I see you have 2 connections created, but is it because one is open VPN and the other is PTPP? You do mention that is some routers the "add connection" is not there. So what the software version on your ASUS RT-AC66U B1?
Your videos are very helpful so Thank You. I have a VPN service for my PC and want to have VPN on my Streaming TV. My arris router does not have VPN option but network switch does, however very complicated . That said I am using Kodi on google chromecast. Would I setup a VPN on chormecast or on Kodi? Thank You in Advance
Wow I was looking for a video like this. Your explanations are so clear. I appreciate that. I was wondering, I have a work company laptop which I obviously can't add programs too because I dnt have access to that IT stuff So, I wanted to go out the country leave for a trip, without complicating things and letting my company know that am leaving, so I would take the computer with me. Buttt Do you think if I was to have a router like that, and apply a VPN address that assigns an IP address to direct Home....as I would be hiding my location would this work? I assume I would take the router with me on my trip. And i also have portable wifi hotspot...But will the router show the IP address of home so that work won't be able to track my actual location? I hope i have confused u. The router connects to a wifi right? Lol
Easy to follow. Great job. It's certainly a cool feature I was not aware of, but at the same time, I see some serious drawbacks. Let say you want to watch a Netflix show from Japan, and your wife wants to watch a Netflix show from UK, how do you solve this?
Hi sir, what about if i want to access my home device from anywhere theough my android vpn client -> vpn home router , should i use VPN profile server on VPN home router then connect normally? Or do i need port forwarding ? Any firewall settings?
Hi. Can I choose any vpn server? Or do I have to choose a server near me or is this something where I am supposed to choose any random server? And how does which server I choose make a difference? Thank you!
Yes, you can choose any server. I recommend choosing one that is geographically close for the sake of speed, but you could choose one on the other side of the world and it might not make a different. It depends on your internet speeds and a lot of other factors.
We live in France and our service is supplied through an SFR (name of the telephone company) provided router. The line is an adsl line which is split at the router for internet and tv. would I be able to buy a separate router, such as one that you suggest to operate the same system? We used to be able to obtain Amazon services via a Firestick to our tv, but due to Brext, since the 1st January, this isn't allowed. I'd like to use a vpn to hide our location.
Hey Paul, without knowing every detail of your setup and router, I can say *generally* that you should be able to buy a router and plug it into the router to setup the VPN. You would then connect all your devices through this new router instead of the SFR-supplied router.
Very good tutorial. My question... My internet service is via fiber optic cable directly into the house. My service provider supplied the router/wi-fi hardware, which is also the tv box. An all in one solution. I am not a fan of these types of boxes. My question, is there a way to set up a VPN router with this type of hardware. Can I connect it to the service providers box through an ethernet port set up the service and then shut off the wi-fi on the service providers box.
I am trying to figure out how I may use a VPN service but by using our own Dedicated IP address and not the providers sourced Static IP address. Is there a simple and effect way to complete this? It is necessary so that when I am traveling for work I may access company equipment on many locations that only allow in via our dedicated IP address. Many Thanks in advance.

Birdyboyblue is correct. If there is no VPN tab, you either need to flash your router (which is risky) or just buy a different router that has the VPN capabilities.

Hi There. I live in UK and I have Virgin Media Hub 3.0 router. I am told that I cannot setup a vpn on it (I just bought NordVPN). Therefore I just bought linksys AC5300 router which supports VPN. I am told that I need to turn my virgin media hub router in modem mode and connect linksys to it. I appreciate if you can let me know how to connect the hardware and then step by step process (turning existing router to modem mode etc.) to setup NordVPN on the linksys router. Thanks very much.
I believe the easiest way to do this is to plug an Ethernet cable into the “out” port of your current modem (don’t change any other cables on the Virgin modem) and plug the other end of the cable into the “in” of your new Lynksys router (it should be the different color socket). Now the new router should have internet access and you can set up the VPN on this router and connect to its WiFi.
Just wondering if my vpn drops (server im connected to) does the router then act as a kill switch to my connection? Or does it connect all my devices to my normal IP automatically. If so how do i get it to connect only through my vpn?

Also Will I have a problem if I already have a VPN cisco meraki box on the network for my work from home situation. Will VPN box to VPN router cause a problem? Thank for a great video.
Most of the time these services just go off of your IP address, which a VPN changes (whether it's on your computer or router). As for the other work router, can you keep a separate network for work and personal?
@@AllThingsSecured Thank you for your response. As things stand now the Meraki box only handels things plugged into it and then it is in turn plugged into the switch. So work stuff is not part of the general network traffic. My concern is basically that I would be adding another layer, currently it's Work Computer to VPN> to Switch> To Router> to Internet Adding a VPN at the router makes it Computer to VPN> to Switch> To Router>VPN\INternet or a VPN that then has to go through another VPN Assuming I am not disabling VPN on the router before starting work.. Hope I explained it properly.

San Diego is right across the border, but my current VPN only gives me Los Angeles as the closest California option. Since this company knows I'm in San Diego, and may not allow me to work from Mex, do certain VPN servers offer San Diego as an option or how can I find that?
If you’re using a commercial VPN, then no. If you’re setting up your own server, then you’ll just have to pay for the internet connection on both ends.

Have you checked your connection status online? Go to www.whatismyipaddress.com and see if it shows your actual location or the location of the server you're connecting to. Perhaps you're connected but the software isn't showing the successful green check. Otherwise, you might want to double check everything.

@@AllThingsSecured thanks for the reply.
Hello, what feature is needed on the router; VPN Server or VPN Client ?, thanks in advance! Excellent video btw.
You need to be able to configure a VPN client if you’re wanting to use a commercial VPN on the router.
All the routers you recommend are DSL. I need a cable connection!
Did you check out all the options at Flash Routers?
Eww...Never combine modem and router, just a rule I live by... it's #9 actually.
Can you manually select certain devises to be active on the vpn well others are not?
There are some WiFi routers that offer this capability, but for the average router, the best you can do is to setup a VPN on one network (i.e. the primary) and not on the other (i.e. the guest network) and then connect devices to one of the two based on whether you want them to run through a VPN or not.
Thank you for the excellent content. Are there routers that allows 4 Wi-Fi network where 3 are separate countries and one is a guests network?
Thank you ! Well done..can u do video on how to set up a guest wifi on said router 2.4 or 5 ghz version.
I want to try this. I have a Comcast cable modem and a NightHawk router right now. I want to try to setup a second router and make that a dedicated VPN router.
Definitely possible, John! The NightHawk router should allow you to connect to a VPN easily.
Were you successful with your setup? I have similar setup I want to try. Thanks.
@@tg9460 waiting for the 2nd router to arrive and then I’ll follow the steps in the video. I’m using Atlas VPN.
Love this video . Also can i change the vpn country with a click from my phone?
No app required.
great video the only issue I have its that the connection status its not changing am I doing something wrong?
Wish I understood what you said everything sounded great 👍
What didn't you understand?
Thank you for your video. I own a TP-Link Deco M5, could you give me some advice. Not seeing a VPN option however, I was able to change Type to PPTP and use my expressvpn credentials for user, pass, and vpn server?! Thanks again..
Sounds like you were able to make the connections, so what’s the question?
Great job, as you know express vpn does not supports pptp anymore, can you tell me how i can use L2TP ON MY Asus Ac51???? I really do need it...❤️
Yes, you can, although your speeds might be a bit slower because of that. It should still work, though!
@@AllThingsSecured how can you find out if they are using GPS tracking?
Why would you want a travel router? Just connect the work pc to the router (server). Were you able to find a solution for that?
This was very informative and comprehensive. Thank you.
I can’t be sure, but my guess is that the VPN is disrupting the method by which it checks the internet status.
could you disable the wifi on the AT&T box and plug a preflashed wireless router into it?
Yes, you can.
I have an older Amped router. DD-WRT & Tomato are not supported. I will be buying an Ubiquiti Dream Machine this week. I will use the Amped as a bridge perhaps.
Great! I hope it works well for you.

What if i restart the router? I need to activate the vpn or it will be autimatically start when i turn on the router?

Hmm, that's interesting, Max. I was able to configure multiple OpenVPN connections on my Asus router. My software version is the latest one available.

Lol
Hiii! I want to do the same! Did this work for you? I’m also wondering if you just connect the vpn router to wifi?
Easy to follow. Great job.
It's certainly a cool feature I was not aware of, but at the same time, I see some serious drawbacks. Let say you want to watch a Netflix show from Japan, and your wife wants to watch a Netflix show from UK, how do you solve this?
One option would be to have her connect to a guest network and then separately connect to another VPN on her device. I think that might work?

Hey Paul, without knowing every detail of your setup and router, I can say *generally* that you should be able to buy a router and plug it into the router to setup the VPN. You would then connect all your devices through this new router instead of the SFR-supplied router.
