And in Argentina was in 1976 to 1982, Videla, Massera and Agosti were the dictators of "Junta Militar". They called it "National Reorganization Process" but it was a fancy way to say "Dictatorship"... The movie "La historia oficial" can show some of things that happened, and a bit harder to see is the movie "Garage Olimpo"
The last year was Malvinas' war, they said "we are winning" but it was a LIE, after that, we back to democratic regime, but never will be the same. And now we have leaders that claim the same economic plan that Plan Cóndor wanted to be implement.

The Condor Operation was the name given to the process organized by the CIA to carry out coups d'état and install dictatorships throughout Latin America (from Mexico to Argentina) in the 1970s. In my country, Argentina, it was a coup that took place on March 24, 1976 (although a process of erosion of the democratic government had already begun before then, due to the lack of political support from some media outlets), and lasted until October 30, 1983, the date of the elections won by Raul Ricardo Alfonsin, who took office on December 10 of the same year. The plan was to end the rise of the left and socialism in the governments of Latin America (Salvador Allende in Chile, for example, whose fall brought dictator Augusto Pinochet Ugarte to power) and at the same time generate the conditions of support (political and economic) for the United States in the "Cold War." In Argentina (I speak of what I know best, although the mechanics were repeated in all the affected countries), there was persecution of politicians, workers, journalists, artists, thousands kidnapped, tortured, murdered and, in the best of cases, forced into exile for years in other countries.

In Brasil, the coup took place on April 1, 1964 and ended on March 15, 1985. The persecution of students, workers, journalists and artists led to families not knowing what happened to their loved ones to this day.

in Mexico they didn't impose a dictator, instead, for 70 years we were governed by the PRI, a political party. It was called "la dictadura perfecta", "the perfect dictatorship". We got a sense of "democracy" when in reality there was none.

    • @erixchel

In Mexico, although there was no coup d’état because the government was already aligned with US interests, there were several massive control operations at that time, such as the Tlatelolco massacre in 1968 and “El Halconazo” in 1971, both acts against student protesters and the country’s working class. Currently, the state transparency pages declare that the “Cóndor” operation in Mexico was one of the first bilateral operations against drug trafficking in our country, in which herbicides were used to exterminate ilegal crops in some regions; however, it is thought that they were rather used to destroy areas of tall vegetation where various opposition groups were established, in order to weaken and/or exterminate them.

That was an unexpected reaction. This song gives me chills. I used to go to protests listening to this song. On a slightest different note, the part of the chorus that is sung in portuguese, was sung by Maria Rita. She is an important figure in Brazilian popular music and she is the daughter of Elis Regina, one of the most important singers in the 70's and 80's in Brazil. Viva Latinoamerica!

When you were talking about the instrumentation: you got to the bone of Latin American folklore, a fusion of different Indigenous, Spanish/Portuguese and African ingredients (rythms, melodies instruments, singing styles, etc) through 300 years of colonial times, firstly, an then 200 years of indepent history in each country. They are simply adding a new layer (rap) to this deep, rich and varied cultural fusion.
    Latin America is peak hybridation!

This music is simply a master piece. As a latin American (Brazilian) this is very strong to me and I have been listening to it since 2015 repeatedly and never get tired of it. It really expresses the struggle of our people and how we keep going , surviving, and working , making art & culture in the middle of it, striving and doing the best we can from the challenges we faced, historically being colonized by the Europeans, and recently by the USA (unofficially). And obviously suffering of multiple coups , and ditatorial governments , unequal society , Corruption and other miserable things as the drug dealers paralel govern. A Genius picture of “um pueblo sin piernas, pero que camina” ( a people without legs that keeps walking)

I really appreciate this reaction video.Every line of the lyrics are deep and have a historical meaning for Latinoamerica, but I have to be more specific with the chorus as most people tend to just focus on the historical facts this song points out. The chorus 'you can't buy the clouds...the rain...my happiness' hits very hard because Latinoamerica is a nation as a whole that has been abused and often our corrupted governments have sold all our resources to foreign first world countries for very little money, and nobody knows where the money they received goes to because there are absolutely no social programs actually helping our population, same thing with our taxes. This is why the song is describing an important part of what we are currently living even today, basically saying 'you steal/get all my natural resources, at least you can't buy my happiness, our rain, our clouds, but if you could, you would'.
The video was also filmed in my home country, Peru. Cuzco is my favorite city in the world and i have traveled to many countries, currently residing in Sydney, Australia as well, and still Cuzco will forever be my favorite city in the world.
Great reaction mate. Gained a subscriber 😁

Latin America, I am Mexican, and I must say that the love of our people transcends borders. Across our entire region, we live with a deep affection for our people. We are all brothers and sisters, walking together, even without knowing the whole story or the burdens that each one of us carries on our shoulders. We will always be there for one another, without knowing names, without understanding each other's pains or joys, we will walk together through the world-without discrimination, without judgment, no matter how far apart we may be.
We will be there for each other because love unites us and goes beyond borders, encompassing the entire world. In my country, Mexico, we have a beautiful saying: "It doesn't matter where you're from; a Mexican is someone who loves Mexico." Any person is our people, our joy, and our pain. With open arms, this is Latin America.

Great reaction, thank you! I'm not usually into rap but this song works so well, the whole package of music, lyrics and visuals in the video is great in my opinion.
Another good one would be "This is not America" by Residente (the rapper who has now a solo career), it's like a complement to Childish Gambino's "This is America", very political and way angrier than "Latinoamérica", with a good music video to go along with it but tricky because it's full of lyrical and visual references to stuff that has happened in Latin America

Residente IS the raper of Calle 13. The difference betwren the lirics sanged by Chico Buarque and him IS the time the songs where made. Chico ,s song is in the years of dictator goberments and Residente,s song is when people could express their thoughts. ( Missing) People just desapeared if they had any thoughts not acording with the dictatorials goberments. The suggestions to reaction This IS not América, IS a good one. IS the entire history of Latinoamérica in a song. It IS a history class. Brillant. This one IS exactly what you said: I am going to Talk with proud about the entire Latinamérica. The quijada, whether of donkey, horse or cattle, in this case also known as charrasca, cacharaina, charaina, carretilla, calanguana or kahuaha, is used as a percussion instrument in various parts of Latin America.

A genius song through and through written & composed by puertoricans which makes it pretty much a miracle. Puerto Rico is still to this day a colony of the US, often referred as another state of the US but they can’t vote in the presidential elections, nor they are recognized as Americans… unless they apply and get citizenship. Almost everything was correct in your statement, except, we are American citizens since 1917 when US needed our kids to go to war and finally, after 19 years of having us as a colony (we were invaded in 1898), then they gave us citizenship. We just need to move to one of the states to be able to vote, can't do it from Puerto Rico.
      Everything else, greatly explained.

    Latin America
I am, I am what they left
I am all the leftovers of what they stole
A town hidden at the top
My skin is made of leather, that's why it can withstand any climate
    I am a smoke factory
    Peasant labor for your consumption
Cold front in the middle of summer
Love in the time of cholera, my brother
The sun that rises and the day it dies
    With the best sunsets
I am development in the raw
    A political speech without saliva
The most beautiful faces I have ever met
I am the photograph of a missing person
    The blood inside your veins
I am a piece of land that is worth it
    A basket of beans
I am Maradona against England scoring two goals
I am what my flag holds
The backbone of the planet is my mountain range
I am what my father taught me
He who does not love his country, does not love his mother
    I am Latin America
A people without legs, but who walk, hey!
    You can't buy the wind
    You can't buy the sun
    You can't buy the rain
    You can't buy the heat
    You can't buy the clouds
    You can't buy the colors
    You can't buy my joy
    You can't buy my pain
    You can't buy the wind
    You can't buy the sun
    You can't buy the rain
    You can't buy the heat
    You can't buy the clouds
    You can't buy the colors
    You can't buy my joy
    You can't buy my pain
I have the lakes, I have the rivers
I have my teeth for when I smile
The snow that makes up my mountains
I have the sun that dries me and the rain that bathes me
    A desert intoxicated with peyote
A sip of pulque to sing with the coyotes
    All I need
I have my lungs breathing light blue
    The height that suffocates
I am the molars of my mouth chewing coca
    Autumn with its leaves fainted
Verses written under the starry night
    A vineyard full of grapes
A cane field under the sun in Cuba
I am the Caribbean Sea that watches over the little houses
    Performing holy water rituals
The wind that combs my hair
I am all the saints that hang from my neck
The juice of my struggle is not artificial
Because the fertilizer of my land is natural
    You can't buy the wind
    You can't buy the sun
    You can't buy the rain
    You can't buy the heat
    You can't buy the clouds
    You can't buy the colors
    You can't buy my joy
    You can't buy my pain
    You can't buy the wind
    You can't buy the sun
    You can't buy the rain
    You can't buy the heat
    You can't buy the clouds
    You can't buy the colors
    You can't buy my joy
    You can't buy my pain
    You can't buy the wind
    You can't buy the sun
    You can't buy the rain
    You can't buy the heat
    You can't buy the clouds
    You can't buy the colors
    You can't buy my joy
    You can't buy my pain
    You can't buy the sun
    You can't buy the rain
    (Let's walk)
    (Let's walk)
    (Let's draw the path)
You can't buy my life (let's walk)
The land is not for sale
    Rough work, but with pride
Here we share, what's mine is yours
This town doesn't drown in squabbles
And if it collapses I'll rebuild it
I don't blink when I look at you either
So that you remember my last name
    Operation Condor invading my nest
I forgive, but I never forget, hey!
    Here you breathe struggle
(Let's walk) I sing because you can hear it
(Let's draw the path) Oh, yes, yes, that's it
(Let's walk) Here we are standing
    Long live America!
    You can't buy my life

Latin America has a lot of great songs, with deep lyrics like this one.
Some of them are kinda coded, or straight up coded, due to repression in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
I'm from the Rio de la Plata so I know more about Argentinian and Uruguayan songs, but there are examples from all over the continent.
And even the non political ones are some kind of great. Lots of word play, cross references, and twists.
Also there's a funny side, and some trash too, I'm not going to deny that, so be careful out there 😅

The sentiment that bind us latin americans comes from suffering, and bleeding of our land, the pride of being latin american comes from resilience in the face of this things

Another song that has a similar vibe is "Tierra Zanta" from Trueno (an Argentine rapper). Here is the link ruclips.net/video/POAdMW-4yfw/видео.htmlsi=q642lF1l-dAbFPRW but it's in Spanish and have no subtitles, maybe you can read the lyrics in English if you google it. It's another folklore instrumental (from the Andes music) fusion with rap/hip-hop vibes. And all the things that they do with the horses in the video are typical abilities from gauchos, or country people from Argentina that training horses to looks like if they were dead or who jump off the horse when it is still galloping.
