Lyrics:
I flew beyond the sun before it was time
Burning all the gold that held me inside my shell
Waiting for you to pull me back in
I almost had the world in my sight
Lost love,bright eyes fading
Faster than stars falling
How can I tell you that I've failed?
Tell you I failed
Falling from grace cause I've been away too long
Leaving you behind with my lonesome song
Now I'm lost in oblivion
I tried to burrow a hole into the ground
Breaking all the fingers and the nails from my hands
The eyes of a child see no wrong
Ignorant bliss, impending doom
Lost love, bright eyes fading
Faster than stars falling
How can I tell you that I've failed?
Tell you I failed
Falling from grace cause I've been away too long
Leaving you behind with my lonesome song
Now I'm lost
Falling from grace cause I've been away too long
Leaving you behind with my lonesome song
Now I'm lost in oblivion
Falling from grace cause I've been away too long
Leaving you behind with my lonesome song
Now I'm lost
Falling from grace cause I've been away too long
Leaving you behind with my lonesome song
Now I'm lost in oblivion
In oblivion
In oblivion

that first “fallen from grace because i’ve been away too long” never fails to send a shiver down my spine. it just sounds so perfect. this song is so underrated.
I wouldn't call this song underrated considering it has 10M views and it's the second most viewed video on their channel.

I love how every member in this band sings. They all have such a unique vocal style.
You got that rocker!!!
Yeah. Especially Bill. Bill is the best singer in Mastodon.
hahaahah fuck yeah
This song becomes a lot more meaningful when you find out the album was dedicated to Brann Dailor's sister and how she killed herself.
I was so happy to come back to this song because in earlier days it made me emotional and now it didn't anymore... until I read your comment -_-
Not hating, btw, only an anecdote C:

all songs on this album are
One of my all time favourites
One of the best on Crack the Skye. Stunning record. My fave is the stunning, the Czar.
It really is
Brann, the drummer, had a big impact on the Crack the Skye album since the whole idea really revolved around the suicide of his 11 year old sister. I considered this their more emotionally attuned album. Some song meanings vary but it's all about Brann's sister essentially. Very sad, very powerful. Get chills every time listening to this album
💕💕
From CTS forward actually almost every single album they wrote was about someone close to them dying.

Crack The Skye came out 14 years ago this week, and this still hits you like a ton of bricks every single time. An all-time great album.
Your post reminded me of a band I grew up listening to...Crack The Sky is the bands name. Mastodon rocks too!!! Thanks for the reminder.

Wow this whole band can sing - why are they so talented
Because I taught them to sing
Actually they cant sing at all so they have to take turns to spread out the embarrasment :D
@@Kallogee they got better even tho it isn't on the level that it is on the records. They used to be real bad, but i think they are good enough now that they don't take me out of the song live.
True
This entire album helped me cope with my great grandmas passing. She was the rock of the entire family for all of those generations and it kind of fell apart after she departed. I was already listening to this album at the time when I first discovered it but she passed shortly after. The concepts on this entire album are amazing. Stuck with me ever since and very formative to my younger existence.
damn, and you did it by yourself bro, this albums just reminds you all the fights that you have won, hope you do even better in the future man! keep going
Sorry to hear your loss. That's how it was with us as well, grandmother and my Mother both passed when we were early teens. Was always so family oriented and it just slowly fell apart over the next few years, has never been the same going on 22 years later
I hear you....I'm about to go through a similar situation with my mom's mom, (the "glue" and my favorite ppl on Earth) gonna be twice as hard to climb back afterwards cause she'll be gone....raised and adores me and knows it's gonna hit me like a lightning strike....not looking forward to any of that, but I shant be alone....

I like how parts of the whole band sing.
same
ChannelAsh100 Bill has been progressively doing less vocals are the albums have gone on. mother puncher is a good example of him doing vocals
Metlson I wouldn't say progressively less, I would say he did some backing vocals on Remission and sings the chorus on Blood and Thunder....aaaaand that's it
yeah i should correct myself on that. I meant i like that several members of the band sing together and not just one. It adds character to the music and band.
cool that the drummer sings
This is the first song that introduced me to Mastodon. I got hooked right away and I'll admit, this is arguably one of the best of today's metal scene. Mastodon and Gojira have helped me throughout my college years and I'll never forget when I went to see Mastodon in concert here in Hawaii, all I wanted to hear was Oblivion and Blood and thunder. Best night ever!
Holy shit man they went to Blaisdell center? That's nuts, I remember when tool went there in 2006 but I was too young to go lol. I see you have the kaneohe zip code in your RUclips name.
They are the Alice in chains of this generation.
My older brother Thor introduced me to Gojira, Mastodon, And Between the Buried and me all in the same night. Forever changed my music taste.
It was Blood and Thunder for me, from NFS Underground (2?), but this one is by far my fav.
Get to see Gojira and mastodon this September. Fiddler’s greens. It seems forever away.

I am sorry to hear this. I don't know what my future beholds. I am stuck in mud. I don't do drugs. Honestly, I could never get into these guys, it took me 16 years to realize what theyre doing. Most songs since the beginning of time are about love, politics, orother happenings; now mastodon comes along and uses music to tell stories, about random myths and legends (and sometime real stories). It's refreshing.

At fill at 0:40. Just right in the middle of the first verse. Best part of the song! The audacity to throw that in there. Its perfection!
Ohmygod you're going to be in Grand Rapids?! I moved here in 2003 and was living here (still live here) when I met my husband, a beautiful, golden human being and metalhead who bore resemblance to Brann. (Aric always, also, wished to play drums. Instead he played a bit of bass.) He introduced me to so much amazing music including Mastedon. This was one of his favorite songs. Ours is a soul-based love that has endured the six years since his death, and will sustain me my life long. When I want to be closer to Aric, I can hug his pillow, wear his hoodie, or boot up one of his beloved metal tracks. Like this one. Thank you.
Just recently learned the concept for this album. Oblivion takes on an entirely new meaning for me. This song was already wildly personal for me.
Sorry for your loss.
So this is easily on my top 5 songs ever list.
And what even happens rhythmically at like 3:40-4:05?! I've heard the song so many times and can't really figure it out (though I haven't rewound it over and over and really tried to get it).
Sly Shippy The solo is in 6/8. The transition you're talking about is where they play in half-time and Brann stutters the beat. After, the song goes full-time again to end the solo
Listen to The Last Baron or The Czar or Crack The Skye.
I like Mastodon's more melodic stuff. Also, I met Brann once at a local club here when his wife's band (Tiger! Tiger!) was playing. Cool fucking guy.
He came into the restaurant I was working at while he was doing his residency on the Seth Meyers Show. Easily the most down to earth and accessible rock star I’ve met.
Me and my youngest got a pic with him while Primus was playing. Super cool dude!!
Yooo thas awesome
That solo is just a blues solo with distortion; it adds so much to this song, as well.
the last time they play the chorus is fucking amazing
Man I love Brann's voice. And that glitched out screen effect he's singing through most of the video is too cool.
Love the warm fuzziness in the last 30 secs of this song. Crunchy blanket.
I'm amazed by the vocal range these guys have. Being 3 vocalists, it seems that they can sing everything while they're together.

One of the best metal songs to ever exist
that drummers voice blows this song away they should make more vocalist performance with him .
one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. I actually get high from playing it.
True stoner rock at its finest.
I don't think you could ever call Mastadon stoner rock man....it's heavy as fuck and some of their songs have got that bluesy riffage going on. Metal aint it? You guys should check out Orange Goblin if you like this song...check out their latest album 'Eulogy for the Damned'..they started as a straight up stoner rock band, but now its fully fledged metal with insane heavy rifs...so maybe your right..I donnow...
+Jaden Grattan I wouldn't classify Mastodon as stoner rock (Kyuss for the win!), but this song definitely leans toward that side of metal. It just lacks the sludgy, doomy sounds of pure stoner rock.
I wish that nice riff at 3:55 was longer.
Crack The Skye is a masterpiece. I love this song.

This is the only band where all the band mates sing.
Only three sing.
Katie Gair
In this music, yes, only Brent, Brann and Sanders sing. But you can hear Bill singing in musics like Blood and Thunder, Crack the Skye, or older albums, when they had a more crude approach. Bill`s vocals tend to be more growled, and are usually used as support for the other mates, especially Sanders.
All four sing, check out earlier mastodon

LOL. That would be Brent Hinds who sings that line... Neither sounds like Ozzy to me. Troy's voice is far too deep. Brann also sings in the song. The non chorus parts. Troy sings the OTHER chorus.. "How can I tell you that I failed.."
Exactly
To me, before I even knew what this album was about and before I saw the music video, it always made me feel like I was in space and it had a very original vibe and groove. It's hard to describe but it shows you how masterful Mastodon is at creating an environment and theme and placing you right in the center of it.
I just spent like 3 hours trying to play the second half of the solo. My brain is dead.
