- We all have heard of Final Fantasy , Phantasy Star, Baldur's Gate, and other majorly popular titles of the RPG genre. But Lands of Lore offered up a new world to explore and enjoy with a heavy take on the western style RPG.
When I owned this game, It wasn't only a great title, but it allowed me to enjoy RPGs with a different style from what I was used to seeing on the console side of things.
Plus...It had Sir Patrick Stewart voicing King Richard!
Old games had amazing pixel art. Like art art.
I'd love to see a revival of this kind of artful pixel style, but with modern resolutions and quality of life improvement.
A friend of mine was obsessed with this series and with eyes of the beholder, the man was a truly hardcore rpg lover
your friend has good taste.
@gamingquarterly6353 I second that. Add Stonekeep to the list. Ohh, and Bard's Tale. 😁
It's not forgotten :) I remember it... And play every 5 years or so.
Happy to see a nice turnout for this video. Good to know there are still many Lands Of Lore fans out there.
Never forgotten. Still own it. And play it.
companies forget, us real fans never do.
Well you got me. I see Lands of Lore and I have to watch. I am a fan of the RUclips Kikoskia and a Westwood fan boy in general so I am here.
Nice to see there are still fans out there. This is still a fun game to play. A bit repetitive in some parts, and lots of backtracking, but fun nonetheless.
Same here bro. Greetings from Australia :)
Nice to see the original lands of lore still being appreciated.
12:10 the game comes with a auto map from the start if you don't forget to get the Atlas before leaving King Richard's Castle.
Lands of Lore was, indeed, a tentative from Westwood to "casualize" RPGs.
A great game, with great music by Klepacki, even if the backtracking is, well, old school.
What a game this was! Loved it, loved it! Loved it! LOVED IT! And the other 2 games in the trilogy - FANTASTIC!
looking forward to playing them.
I love the effort they put into these old games!
Took me literally years to complete this. Still have the CD in the attic somehere. I was switching between this, broken sword, beneath a steel sky, star trek 25th anniversary, monkey island, grim fandango, gabriel knight, day of the tenticle, lost eden & probably others I forget - which is why they took me so long to complete. Obviously I had too much time on my hands in the 90's!
Looks like it was time well spent bud. Those are all classics pretty much. Westwood and Lucasarts were killing it.
I have it on Steam :) gabriel Knight 3d does not work..
I still have the complete pc box under the house.
I too thought this game was very niche, but after finding kiko’s videos I was happily wrong. And now seeing LoL videos are still
Being made/ enjoyed makes me happy.
Ill never forget lol, eye of the beholder, love dungeon crawlers and lands was so advanced with voice acting. Amazing.
Super underappreciated series; the production values for these games were insane. The games dipped in quality as they went along but I always appreciated them.
I am still playing this one and I can't waiti to finish it so I can see the other ones. Only problem is time.
They where huge then.
Something that makes me sad is that I wish more of this kind of games would be on consoles, I am not a pc player (nothing wrong with being a pc player) and usually that's the platform it's released on.
Thanks bro 👍🏼
I definitely would welcome this. western RPGs were huge on PC back in the day, while consoles leaned more toward JRPGs. now, it's about even.
Still a masterpiece of the genre. Still the best in the series too. The sequels were trash when they moved to 3D
Yeah that was not the best decision😅.
They not only looked like roadkill, they even had the same entertainment value as a decomposing marten
I liked the other two games, too.
I remember trying a shareware version of this when I was a kid. Of course I didn't last 2 minutes in it, but the intro was amazing. I still think these graphics are jaw dropping.
It's one of those games that even though it is 30 years old, it still looks great. I totally agree with you.
Brought a tear to my eye...
My favorite game. A shame the franchise failed and died in the end.
its not forgotten. it never will be!
My friend found Lands of Lore 3 in a dumpster while walking home from school. His parents didn't allow him to install it on their home computer so he gave the game to me, sadly it didn't run properly and kept crashing so I never got to play it
what a crazy find. Even if I found a game like that on the dumpster and it didnt work, I would keep the box. Those PC boxes back then were a work of art.
Lands of Lore II Guardians of Destiny is SUPERB!!! Good luck ;)
will probably do a condensed video of 2 and 3 once I get to them.
Charmingly reminiscent of the Warcraft 1 cutscene art
Brother, has anyone ever told you that you sound as if you're gonna tell me to go delve into Bleakfalls Barrrow and fetch a dragonstone? Nah I', just kidding man, but seriously though thank you for introducing me to this little gem, I always love learning about these proto-AAA PC games from yesteryear, I mean yea, this game might be old enough to have released and run natively on the DOS but imagine getting stare power like PATRICK STEWART in a game today. Craziest thing to is that for some reason RPGs back in the day seemed to be able to just pull that sorta thing what with Redguard having the protag be voiced by Micheal Mack, also of Star Trek fame.
Glad to be of help. Now go dive off Bleakfalls Barrow.😅
Thanks 👍👍
One RPG from that time that doesnt get enough love was 'Albion'.
not familiar with it. Will look into it. Thanks for the mention.
NOT forgotten!
Nobody who knows have forgotten it. First time hearing Soundblaster music..
Westwood was jsat buried by EA like Origin, Bullfrog and so on..
4:30 So games back in the gives you all the characters, No gacha system? No losing to 50 / 50 systems?
no DLC! just play the game and enjoy. Crazy concept.😄
@@gamingquarterly6353that is completely insane 😮😮😮don't the companies need Money to pay wages and all that ? What kind of corporate witchery was going on ? No wonder they all sold out to EA and the other usual suspects.
Live Service Games are like cancer. Not even the worst Kind that would end you quite fast, but the Kind that you can live with for years and that you eventually accept living with. But don't you miss to attend your regular treatments. After all, you would be at a serious disadvantage If you are taking your meds😊
Tidbit: the floppy version of this game was not completable on release due to a bug. It was many, MANY years later before I figured out this was not my fault and repurchased the CD version 😂😂
I was so impressed by the game that I too purchased it again when the CD version came out. Did not disappoint.
Ever play this RPG or any other ones in this series? If not, is it an RPG that seems to be worth playing?
It's worth pointing out that you were running this at the wrong aspect ratio, so the mostly excellent pixel art here suffered a little in quality.
For some reason I couldnt get it to run at full screen at proper ratio to record. So I had to blow it up to fill the screen on Premiere. I was not happy about that.
Good video, but you really dont have to draw your map in the game, because it has automapping system and it is a great one ;)
like a true moron. for a bit I had no idea of the map feaure and would map eveything out on paper.
imagine making a furry your cannon hero
it was an odd choice, but props for going at it from a different angle. (that's what she said)
My only complaint about this game is that it should have had a female character option as well. Conrad or Michael could have been replaced. More variety.
I totally agree. Or had Lora be a more involved character.
