I actually believe the reason the Team Theorist faces ranked so highly overall is because we are used to these faces, honestly an interesting result that could make for a great episode to talk about seeing something more often improving it’s look

That too. But I also think it's personality. We like them. We're not only used to them, but they're not generic stock images with no personality. We find them funny, witty, etc. Objective looks can be skewed by knowing someone is a total douche or super funny.

As an artist, I think I can add another layer to this. When a face has perfect vertical symmetry, we don't register it as a real face because real faces just aren't that perfectly symetrical. Because of this, they can fall into the uncanny valley. They make you uncomfortable. When I draw a person in front-facing perspective, I'll use the symmetry tool but I'll always go back in and liquify or redraw some of the features to break the symmetry and make them less creepy and lifeless. The uncanny valley plays a huge part in this because our brains register symetrical faces as unnaturally perfect. Plus, asymetry can make things more interesting and therefor more memorable. I'm no scientist or mathematician though, so take this with a grain of salt. (Side note- I already love this new channel. It's a really creative and cool idea)

100% CORRECT! I can't agree with this strongly enough! Perfectly symmetrical faces actually give me minor anxiety feelings, especially faces I'm normally familiar with (Perfect Sym-Matpat is a PERFECT example..*shudders*). And i get chills looking at them. The Uncanny Valley trope sums the experience up in totality.

    • @emilyvalentine4565
      @emilyvalentine4565 Год назад +41

For what it's worth this is largely solvable in my experience by using color theory, on which there are of course a number of great videos by professional artists. Essentially colors work well not just in direct contrast (red + green), but in more extensive but related groups of contrast (red + yellow-green & cyan or red & yellow + cyan & indigo); in this though you should factor value (lightness-darkness) and saturation (how "diluted" a color is) not just hue.

If you ever get the chance to revisit this concept, you should include naturally symmetrical faces to the survey, and for the Photoshop faces work on the shading and eye direction, many of those faces hit the uncanny valley because you can tell they've been digitally altered, either by the shadows not working the way shadows normally work or the eyes no longer looking in the same direction, or both. This can definitely be expanded upon to make a serious, potentially publishable, bit of research.

In art, asymmetry is often a desired trait, as long as it's with purpose. If you have a symmetrical piece, it's boring, it's simple, it's quick to analyze and quick to throw into the bin.
However, asymmetrical pieces leave you thinking, they cause your brain to go into overdrive as your eyes wander the entire canvas. Why? Because like Aerosmith, you "don't wanna miss a thing." You check every Tom Nook and cranny and try to understand everything about it. It's like a scavenger hunt or a "Where's Waldo?" In some cases, you find yourself asking "why?" and in others, like certain precarious sculptures, you ask yourself "how?" It's like Matt's older FNAF videos mention. You keep going back looking for more, but when you figure out all of the answers, your brain discards it as no longer necessary. It's complete, it's finished, but by not answering every question, it stays in the back of your mind. That's why pieces like "Mona Lisa" are so memorable, not because of the portrait itself, but because of the mysteries surrounding it. Seriously, in reading the name "Mona Lisa," you can't tell me a silhouette of the painting didn't just pop up in your mind... Right? Only me? Well, I'm weird.

That's not quite what the uncanny valley is. The uncanny valley is an instinctual thing where we think something looks wrong when it looks almost human, but is just slightly off, something is wrong and we don't like it. This. A symmetrical face is not the same as a symmetrical photo of a face. Man, much as I was skeptical of the style theme, it's truly impressive at this all has been at less than a day and you're already at just about 3/4 of a million subscribers. Congrats!
Have actually been digging the content.

The fourth channel is finally out with some nice videos. I personally expected "Science Theory" cuz of the Blue Potion in game theory's banner

I have ptosis on one eye since I was born. That means it's eyelid is always lowered, just above the pupil. And no, I can't lift it any higher.
Anyways, I always preferred asymmetrical hair style, and still do. Even when I collect my hair into a pony tail, it is noticeably to the right.
So, face asymmetry has been with me all my life.

To my eyes, anytime I would see a face or object that looks too perfect or symmetrical, it make me feel as though it's fake or unnatural. Seeing a flaw allows me to have a sense of distinction and realness. Even down to the smile. A perfect set of teeth is creepy to me lol

And with that I'm all caught up. The channel looks great so far! Wasn't sure what to expect going in, but I've enjoyed all the episodes so far (even if I have no idea what's going on with makeup and attractiveness haha). Keep up the great work MatPat!

When I did this survey I was wondering why some of the images were repeating, I didnt even notice that some were normal and others edited to be symetrical, they just looked the same.

Even if symmetry isn’t an evolutionary advantage in modern times, we haven’t been in the modern age long enough for our biology to fundamentally change accordingly

around 15:00 you mention a gender difference, my theory based on evolution is that rougher, imperfect men seem more attractive since that proves their strength, meanwhile a more perfect and untouched woman seems more attractive since they're healthier
just throwing that out there, very likely wrong
