Im from South Africa, and we definitely dont consider this as the national dish, even though i think it is on paper. We have so many different cultures and nationalities in our country, we have the most indians in South Africa outside off India...and therefore alot of people think the "bunny chow" should be the national dish - which is basically curry served in a quarter of a loaf of bread...or even braaivleis (charred - meat) - but this consists of so many different things, so it would be hard to make it a national dish. I think most South Africans would lean towards a "braai and chakalaka" as our national dish because it is the most common meal amongst all the tribes and provinces we have in South Africa. I would say that Bobotie is a dish that represents a certain group in South Africa and in a specific region. Unfortunately, Bobotie doesn't represent all South Africans. Otherwise, I love your channel and this segment as it showcases different foods and cultures and how similar each culture is to the next. A lot of South Africans seem to disagree on this, but as a South African myself I think bobotie makes sense. Historically, the dish is a culmination of several South African nationalities and settlers combining inspiration. It has Malaysian, Khoi, and Dutch influences.
