  • This is the Third episode of, How to Terrarium. In this episode, you will learn EVERYTHING you need to know in order to make an all natural Native Terrarium. We will call this a native terrarium because all of the items that it is made of are found locally or native to you. This video is long, but it explains things in depth.
    Eventually we will go over how to make terrariums suitable for reptiles/amphibians. You could use the principles explained in this video, to create one on your own. However, some of the things done in this are not optimal for larger setups.
    Difficultly Level: Beginner
    A closed native terrarium is pretty easy to care for and are cheap to make. They require minimal watering and aren't demanding in other aspects. The difficultly in this terrarium comes with making proper plant selections. Even still, don't get discouraged if yours doesn't work out right the first time, it takes practice and patience.
    A final thing to mention, is that your terrarium will likely mold. This usually happens shortly after your enclosure is first setup. It is very normal and will go away within a few weeks.

    When I was collecting moss, I came across an empty snail shell! I put it in my terrarium and it added a lot to it.

    Hey Tanner. I just wanted to say that you are a great inspiration and teacher. I discovered your channel about a couple years ago and fell in love with the world of terreriums, ripariums, paludariums, aquariums and pretty much every other -arium since then lol. I've always wanted to work with nature and after discovering you, and your channel, I was inspired to start my own business building terrariums and aquascapes. It hasn't gotten off the ground yet but I'll let you know when it does! Anyways, the point of this whole comment was to tell you that thanks to you, I started on this journey, and I built my first native terrarium just day before yesterday. The joy I felt was soo immense, this comment box doesn't have space for the words I would use to describe it. It was such a positive and uplifting experience for me, in soo many ways, to see that all the studies I've been doing on botany as well as my passion can be manifested into this simple little jar of plants from around my home. It signified for me, the first step in a much greater journey of finding myself and building a business/career I can enjoy and love. So... THANK YOU TANNER!

    Do you think you could do a basic "diagnostic" vid to help those of us whose terrariums are not doing so well? My class and I built some after watching your vids, and some are OK ,others not. Could you do a vid focusing on errors or incorrect conditions (eg. too much/little water, too much moss on top, too much/little sun, etc) and the effects they have on the plants? It would help greatly. Thanks, and keep it up!

      You have an entire class of people doing it, that's a lot of data. Maybe if you do it next time, take notes about the conditions and how they turn out and you'd have yourself a helluva how-to on upkeep

There's no foliage yet, so I don't know what I'm growing in there. It kind of makes it even more fun. Snails have also arrived. I didn't see them when I was putting it together.

      I love this idea, don't you worry that the soil might contain tiny insects and you end up with tiny flies or something in the terrarium?

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  7 лет назад +7

      Even if this occurs (which is likely), since it's a closed terrarium it's not something to worry about. They will eventually die off. Worst case you could take your terrarium outside, open the lid and they fly out.

    • @Geewiz593

      I love your videos! I made a terrarium by following your closed tropical terrarium video, but unfortunately I don't have any access to springtails (yet). It has started to mould, and while I know this isn't something to be worried about, I can't find very good information about it anywhere, so I don't know what to expect or how to tell if it's moulding for too long or too excessively. Could you make a video explaining this process with and without springtails? Thank you so much!

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  7 лет назад +6

      Without springtails it should last about a month or so. I can definitely do a video on it here soon. Try airing it out for a few hours here and there. It should help solve the problem faster!

    Another great video. One thing to keep in mind is removing plants and even stones from some areas might be illegal, national parks etc. Also some plants may be protected so can't be taken from anywhere. And some aren't protected but should be. Some of the most beautiful things here in Indonesia are up for grabs but should be protected and back home in NZ there are amazing carnivorous plants and orchids that would be amazing in terrariums but can't be touched. Keep up the good work, bro. Your creations are beautiful.

    First of all: Amazing channel, I've just found a new thing to help me relax. Saw this video last night and immediately went gathering materials this morning to create a few terrariums. I have one question: Now in winter, the temperature in my flat drops by a lot when I open the windows for a bit. The terrariums begin to film up inside and it won't go away for hours. Is that a problem?
