Love that you guys do these 'man talk' videos. I'm a 85lb. 70yr. old grandma doing this postage stamp homesteading thing pretty much on my own. I learn so much from you guys and your wives as well. Then I just have to scale things down and find work arounds. So don't ever cut out or not film the fails. I glean the most info from them. Please ignore the push back from the masters of nothing. The days you just set the camera up and go do your thing are some of my favorites. By the way thanks for letting yourselves and families be vulnerable to the public scrutiny, it has to be tough. Blessings to all of you.

Grandpa had three milk cows. He was out at the barn by five am to milk, while granny fired up the wood burning stove, rolled out biscuits and started the bacon. By six am they were sitting down to bacon, eggs and biscuits every day. Then the milk went through the separator and the milk cans were filled for pick up and the extra milk and cream were put into the house for use. They drove to mass at the local church seven days a week. Then the daily chores were started. Feed the pigs in the pen, check the cattle on pasture, take care of the corn on the lower forty for feed, check hay fields as needed. This was a thousand acre farm (one third in timber crop) ran by the two of them. Granny had the garden for home vegetables, chicken coup, and collecting and dealing with the wild berries and nuts on the land. Blackberry, goose berry, walnut, and hickory. Weekends kids and grand kids pitched in. Down to bed shortly after dark once the cows were back in the barn.

@@Norunormii It was a hard life. They married as teen immigrants from France and had a mess of kids to feed and it was hard scrabble for a long time. The house and barn were built off the land of rough sawn timber. They did not have indoor plumbing until the sixties. But they were wealthy for their area with that much acreage. They knew no other life. The whole valley was relatives or one other large French family. Everyone helped each other on the big projects so they had support. One fact was they did not even notice the Great Depression being about sixty miles or more south of St. Louis, as they had their own food and nothing much changed with their income. Maybe hog, cattle or milk prices dropped a little but they would not miss a meal. Pretty well insulated and self sufficient. As the kids moved away for High School or marriage they had enough to buy machinery and make the labor easier. And with rural electrification their later years were easier. The life was simple really. Work, church, and sleep. And I would guess some mattress fun with that many kids. Radio was big but I do not ever remember a TV since they were out of range for over the air signal. I do remember some various wines in the root cellar. Dandelion, cherry, and blackberry with likely some others. Just do not think they knew any better. I am sure he has some education as he read the bible daily but I doubt it went beyond local grade school. The kids had to move to St. Louis if they wanted more than eighth grade at the catholic school near home. Many of the boys did do that, though some of the older ones went to war underage.

Just some thoughts... I grew up on a homestead back when homesteading was just trying to survive, not a choice. I love to watch all of your videos because they bring back some of the nostalgia and remind me of why that childhood was a MUCH better childhood than many of my peers had, and the majority of children have today. I would LOVE to see more just updates on how the garden's doing, garden tours or pests you're battling, updates on the orchard, the pigs, etc. I love watching Jason take us around and just watch the animals. I love the projects, but every video doesn't need to be a project. It can just be life. I LOVE to watch preparing the meals, but how about also just talking about things like taking store of what we have left from last year, what we need to plant more of next year, what things we grew that we didn't really care for so we won't grow again, etc. And don't let people's negative comments get to you... my father worked on cars for 50 years and could fix anything, but he still had armchair quarterbacks telling him how to play his game. Also, I agree with someone's comment that the failures are a VALUABLE thing for those people watching who are maybe wanting to homestead... a reminder that you don't have to have all the answers before you start, that you CAN find your way through things, that sometimes failure is going to come and that's OK, etc. Maybe you guys can help each other tackle some of those projects you've been putting off? My father used to have bees and we always had so many bees, much more honey than we could ever use. He'd give honey to my aunt for eggs and beef, to my uncle for pork. My aunt would trade beef to my uncle for pork, etc. We'd all go to my grandparents' house for fruit from the orchard. Having community and trading, helping each other... "many hands make light work" is a very old saying from hundreds of years ago, but I think it still applies just as much today.

Yeah ! I agree, and maybe just make it clear that it ISN'T a "how to" , instruction video on bow to build something, step by step w plans or anything. Obviously, you'll apparently still get those critiques of where u put your screws, or worse. I myself would be HIGHLY tempted to shut of comments or never read them.. I can't imagine how hard this is ! But most of your actual fan-families I think will totally understand AND appreciate you just filming your day, putsing w materials and attempting to create something. If it doesn't work, hey - you may have just saved me an afternoon of trying the same thing ! Now I know what doesn't work, thanks !

Yes! I say film the start of the pasture work going over the why and the plans like you usually do. Then add a video here and there of the progress. It will show how long it takes and what hard work you put in.
When someone films a whole project in one episode it feeds to the Instant gratification entertainment culture we already have.

We watch because we enjoy your company, period. You make us comfortable. Maybe not all of us, but some people just should not matter to you. I just started watching Jason and Ben and thoroughly enjoy their families and videos. I started watching the Lumnahs when they got the goat Hope and have been there ever since no matter how dizzy I might get when one of them puts the camera on their face and then spins around thinking they are showing me the background behind them. @Hollar Homestead Maybe im wrong, but I think Ben's hesitation is wondering if the trailer's structure is strong enough to hold up a different roof line. The trailer roof is flat, and a pitched roof puts more outward pressure on the walls. One way around that is to do a metal structure around the front and back deck, trailer and the new addition. This could carry the load of a bigger roof encompassing the front and back decks, trailer, and new addition. I hope that makes sense. Kind of like a pole barn, built over it all, but using steel. Then its all anchored together under a strong structure.

There is always something that will make you jump from one project to another. Weather, lack of supplies available, time, etc. I can completely understand. It can become overwhelming with several projects on the burner and not many completed. Those that have creative minds will always be coming up with new ideas for other things or the project currently in progress, while working on one. Especially being on undeveloped land, trying to figure out what to put where can add to being overwhelming.

You're not just stirring ideas in your heads but in ours, too.
Ben, where do you intend on placing the addition for both the added bedrooms, as well as the deck???
I'm imagining your planning to put the deck up for the sliding glass door area. Can that be tied also to the added bedroom????
    I can hardly wait.
You did such a great job on the total remodel/build. I'm sure this add-on will turn out fantastic, too. You are so good and thorough in all the work you do and have done. I can certainly understand the added consideration of enlarging the pantry area, as well. Currently, the kitchen area is just getting smaller and smaller due to all the items you have to store in there. Hanging items on the walls is very helpful, but I'm sure you're needing more shelf space, for all the canning that is occupying so much time from everyone, right now.🎉
I'm so anxious to see every bit of it.

For cut a log wall, use a chainsaw. Just use a stud finder, or Walbot, to find out where the stabilizing spikes were put. You DO NOT want to hit a spike with the chainsaw...I speak from experience. Lol

Ben, we had a friend back in the late 1970’s that built on to their mobile home and he passed away at the age of 33 from cancer. They were homesteading you might say back then but keeping their full time jobs as well. If I remember well he just built right up next to the back door of the mobile home and used that back door to go into like a hallway that lead into more larger bedrooms and laundry room with extra bath. I wished I could remember how he did it. I cannot remember how he did the roof but he almost had as much square footage as he did in the mobile. It was very nice and inside you couldn’t tell it wasn’t actually like a regular home. It flowed nicely as if a regular home. I know he did have a master suite bedroom with their own bath and they gave their children the actual bedrooms in the mobile but his children was quite young when he passed away. Good luck with your build.

I do have one thing to say to y'all .... make a sign that reads, "Only God is perfect, this is homestead good". How you construct something isn't a one way only path. Just like some who have to blast though rock to build a foundation, others are going to say, man a pick and shovel is all I needed...why did you go to that expense. Thanks for sharing your upcoming project ideas, I will be looking forward to watching them come to fruition. And to all those who are watching these fine men building a homestead for their families...cut them some slack, if you can't say something nice, don't say it. We all know hindsight is 20 20. Everyone, have a Blessed day.

Always enjoy these! I would like to see more work parties- so much gets done and everyone enjoys it - sometimes it is daunting watching you all do so much by yourselves. I am surprised you pay so much attention to the critics when there are so many who really appreciate what you are doing- why waste your time trying to appease them- you never will!!! Just focus on US who respect you and appreciate the encouragement we get in listening to you being honest with your problems and working out solutions

Ben, have a work party. Make your plans, buy supplies, then invite people over, tell them what you want, build and then eat together. Another idea is to look for a second single wide, join it up and have a double wide?

Jayson on building the door on timber frame, you might want to build an internal frame to stabilize the wall first. Including a jack to hold roof up and stable. Loving this format, it's great hearing from all 3 of you at once

I used to have the same problem, being scattered and unsure as to what to do and when to do it. I don't film for RUclips so that's an element of the problem I can't address. However, I learned that sitting down, thinking all things through and putting pen to paper was the best way for me to get things done. Just start writing down, in any order, every project, idea and goals you want to reach. Then read over that list multiple times with your spouse. Start to prioritize and organize your list. Once you get that accomplished, put an estimated amount of time you believe it will take for each thing on your list. After that, start setting dates for when you plan to start each project and the date you believe you can complete said project. Add 2 days to the planned completion date. Add 10% to estimated costs, if any, for projects. Determine who can be available to help you if needed and put a schedule on a dedicated calendar for your "to-do" list. Pray about all things and be determined. The Father will lead you if you just take His Hand! I love watching the podcast and your respective channels!

You're probably right, it's a tiny little rain collection surface. If you get an inch of rain, with say a 4' x 4' surface, that's 1/12' deep x 4' x 4' which is just 1 1/3 cubic feet. A gallon is 0.13368 cubic feet, so if you divide that into the 1 1/3 you get the gallons, about 10 gallons. That's if you capture every bit of run off and the rain was really 1". A lot of the water that hits the surface splashes and doesn't get to the rain gutter. With such a small collection surface a lot of the splashes are going to hit the ground, not back onto the roof. Then there's the wind. If the wind is blowing the water off of the roof before it gets down the gutter, or if you have a free fall from the gutter which blows away you won't get hardly any water at all. Things to think about in a redesign. Might want short walls to keep rain from blowing off as much and have the spout sealed to a pipe that goes down into the collecting container. The surface could be soft to minimize the bounce. You can read about all this.

Maybe Doug would be a great guy to help you with how to build your deck & addition safely. He studies any project he is going to do from all angles and then chooses his best option.
