I raise cornish cross. My chickens ALWAYS get fully feathered. I have a tin shed coop with a hardware cloth wood framed doors. This coop is fenced with hardware cloth for a run. I keep their feed and water in the coop. I feed as much as they want during the day and don't fill feeders at night. My birds go out to sun. They eat the grass clean around the coop. I herd them in using a stick or a broom over their heads (they think it is prey) and they get shut in for the night just like my laying flock. If your meat birds do not have feathers DON'T FOOL yourselves. They are STRESSED and unhappy. Also I make it easy for myself as I am a 66yr old female homesteader. I layer pine shavings to get rid of smell and keep coop clean. I only have one large clean up after they are butchered. Also....I TAKE THE HEAD right off. I don't make it suffer like so many homesteaders are teaching the wrong way. They still bleed out and it is HUMANE. Hope this helps someone. One more thing...my birds are ready to harvest in 7 weeks!!!! To raise them in those God aweful confined chicken tractors is horrible. Ever notice they don't show you what it is like for those birds when they are 8 weeks old???? PACKED and no room to stretch wings. That is factory farming at a smaller scale. Unhealthy meat to eat too because it is filled with adrenaline. Adrenaline is toxic to humans to consume.

I went into chicken coop one day and found that a nest box was totally black. Backed up and went to garage to get a pruner that has extensions, and went back in to remove snake. Turned out he was harmless, except for the eggs he was eating, don't remember the name of the snake. But he had eaten six eggs, and I know that because after pulling him out of the coop with said pruners, I had chopped him almost in half. Oops, sorry snake, don't scare me like that next time.

Wolf spiders and their babies bite and there is no pain to know that they have bitten you. You begin to feel unwell and to develop an itch over the next two days. Then, it gets worse with pain, especially bone pain at night, for about three months. I had about 200+ bites down one leg when a female with babies got caught in my clothes after a bathroom trip on a train between San Diego and Oakland. I was given a steroid cream for the bites to keep them from festering and tearing down the tissues and an opiod for the pain...

I have to share a wolf spider story with you guys. My two younger brothers came out to my place in the country to help me get some clean-up done in my yard. We were all raised in the city, but I had become acclimated to the insect population, and they to me. Mike and David were loading things into my garden cart to take to the dumpster when they discovered a wolf spider about 1.5 inches in diameter. A medium-sized one in my experience here in Texas. Mike the elder shouts, "Hey, Z we got a huge spider in your cart. What should we do with it?" I walk back to see the huge spider and see a juvenile. I picked up a stick and shooed it out of the cart saying, "Crisis averted, city boys!" 🤣🤣🤣
Check out the video: "Moose Drunk on Fermented Apples and Stuck in the Tree!" 🤣🤣🤣
Ben, it is quite simple. Deer are naturally suicidal.

Jason, you can still push the intestine that's protruding through the hole of the hernia and tape it closed now. This is what they do for the human that can't fet the surgery done for a while. Use something that keeps the intestine from pushing out again and tape it shut. My son had a hernia when he was maybe 10 and we used a fifty cent piece which was big enough to keep it from pushing out again. The longer you can keep that pig growing the more benefit it will be to you. It's not painful unless the intestine gets caught in the hole and becomes strangulated like you described.

Wow, number 46! Yup, I remember wolf spiders that made a tapping noise across my papers when I was doing homework. They were pretty big. Those snakes are weird looking Ben. I'm glad you don't have to deal with those huge bugs anymore. I'm glad you got the black snakes Jason. So great that the highland cows are so gentle Al. Nice that you can breed them with your Azalea Jersey cow. Nice, you plan on another female cow for breeding too. Too bad about the animal doors on your barn. Cool, 2 metal pig huts. Good idea to have the inspections after the baby! Pigs do have personalities. Congratulations for helping put the fire out Jason! Yay, you got your 7 acres all fenced in! It must be great to know your meat birds are better protected for the butchering classes. Yup, those Cornish Cross meat birds are the best! I tried the Murray MacMurray Big Red Broiler and they just didn't grow as fast. The rooster I had out of that batch was beautiful. He didn't last. Another rooster got him. Our male pig that had a hernia couldn't be castrated but he grew out just fine. He was delicious! We didn't have the gene so we couldn't taste the boar's taint. The farmer gave him to us with the two gilts we bought. Then we had 3 pigs to raise and we grew them out 5 months. Humid misery in North Carolina right now! Yes, animals are delicious. Home grown is the best! Thanks for doing these podcasts guys!

I watch on RUclips instead of listening elsewhere because I love watching all your expressions. I think like Jason, I move through the world like Ben and I act like Al (but wish I could build like him.) All 3 of these men (& their wives) have similar skills but express differently. ❤ Jason & Ben encouraged me to try to build things, etc. I learned I could. They all speak to me differently on similar subjects. That helps me engage. I watch and learn from all of your families, jumping in at whatever level I am at. I remember G looking nervous cooking in front of camera years ago, to looking so confident. M, like me, has a recipe, but also cooks by feel, and L, love what u serve your family and would love a couple shots included of a meal here and there more often, even if u don’t want to talk about it. ❤ Thanks! ~another southern CA transplant

al, found this on google while you guys chatted. In the broiler industry, males and females are transferred from the pullet farm to the production farm between 18 and 23 weeks of age. Broiler breeders reproduce by natural mating, which allows a number of males to mix with an entire flock of hens.
The goal of the chicken industry is to produce chicken meat at the least possible cost, and AI does not do that. For example, nearly all turkey raised today has to be artificially inseminated because the broad breasted white males are too front-heavy to “reach” to procreate.
Artificial insemination (AI) is not routinely used in commercial chicken production systems in the United States because natural mating results in adequate fertility levels. However, AI is routinely used in special breeding work for research purposes. For example, modern Cornish X chickens are often artificially inseminated because of their huge breasts.

They do have dark colored broilers! Hoovers and I think Meyers, have what they call Royal Grey Broilers. We tested last year and posted on our page Rangers, Corns, and Greys. The Corns still grow the fastest, but I lost a couple to broken legs and the lack of mobility remains an issue. Especially if you want them on grass actually foraging. The Greys perform somewhere in the middle of Rangers and Corns. We switched entirely to Grey, and decided to just push them to the 10 week range as we prefer and bigger finished bird so one can feed all 5 of us. It’s much more enjoyable to have a full feathered finished bird that can actually move lol, and honestly just about everything we grow I try to be different than the regular.

My uncle worked for highway maintenance and he was driving down the lake Superior north shore when a moose fell off the cliff, landed with his front legs on the driver's side of his hood and his back legs off the passenger side. It pushed in the windshield but didn't come into the cab. The moose got off the truck hood and proceeded to kick in the driver's side door and then walk away. There was some traffic on the highway so there were a few witnesses but years before cell phone so no pictures other than of the truck. Uncle was fine except for a few scratches from brushing glass off his clothes.

They can plow through 4 feet of snow like it isnt even there. I often have moose on my acreage but i give them plenty of space. Not many things i wouldnt send my boys 🐕 🐕 after but that moose was not backing down and my dog was way to close.

We must of got the worlds best deal on metal pig hut. My husband noticed on his way to work a place that never had pigs but for several years had the metal hut sitting there. He stopped and asked about it the guys said ya he bought it cheap at an auction and had never used it. He said give him 25 dollars and haul it off. The only cheap thing about the 3 years we breed pigs was that hut.Jason the jurassic park story was so FUNNY!
