We had 4 years of industrial arts in my high school which was a combination of first mechanical drawing, metal shop and wood shop alternating in order through the next week through the year. So you got equal amounts of time getting individual attention. There was a Technical school 10 miles away. Entirely industrial arts training. I loved those years. The mechanical drawing became ‘drafting’ the last two years

Thank you very much, Claudia, for bringing up this matter. Although I am not 75 years old and as happy as a lark when I get out into my garage shop, I still remember those days when I began my teaching career as a junior high Industrial Arts teacher. This was back in the early '70s and before the advent of all the technology emphasis that shifted Industrial Arts away from the "general education" theme to the "high-tech" theme. Nothing wrong with technologies or high tech, but when I taught, I had many students who were quite good at the exercises and projects we did, but who would never have taken Industrial Arts if it had been totally about high-tech (wiring schematics on breadboards just to see the light blink, then tear it all apart so the next class could jump through those same hoops) and physics.
Shoot! I had students who are now attorneys, physicians, physicists, plumbers, aerospace mechanics, commercial aircraft pilots, and those who were extremely happy to enter the building trades or office management or who owned their own businesses. Even one of my former students, Dr. Alan Sills, is the current official doctor for the National Football League. Al is a supremely highly-regarded surgeon who works out of the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Then, I had a really good student, Herbert Hood, who probably never graduated high school, but Herbert had an amazing mechanical mind, even as a junior high student. He now has a job working with a major railroad and is solving big problems for them because he has that unique kind of mind that's totally magnetized to such things.
Oh yeah, then there is Freddy Craddock. His dad was a professor at Mississippi State University (local to us in Starkville, MS), but Freddy just could not figure our fractions. He mastered the metric system, though, because most of it involved moving decimal points. Well, Freddy became such a great welder that right out of high school, he got a great job with Ingalls Shipbuilding on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and is now earning a remarkably high salary as a leading welder for them. Who knew?
I'm proud to say that, even after all these years of having taught those wonderful young people, I have a closed Facebook group called, "Mr. A's Industrial Arts Class" and, although I left the classroom in 1981 to become a principal, I still have 140 of my former students with whom I have regular conversations. And, some of them are turning SIXTY years old this year! We just share a lot of love with one another.
So, yes....if only we could bring back the "original" Industrial Arts in which students could learn how to hang a door in their house when the hinge gets so loose that they have to call a carpenter to come repair it...or how to understand the way their electrical circuits in their homes work so they don't have to hire an electrician just to install a new outlet in a bedroom...or similar.
I could go on and on...but, suffice it to say that, if students today had the kind of Industrial Arts class in which I was fortunate to teach, those students would be very well-equipped to become homesteaders. Shoot, Al Lumnah could hire some of them to help him erect those buildings he's putting up on the OGP (Off Grid Property) in NH.
Thanks, y'all, for letting me spew forth on this topic!

Ben has his boys to help out like Jason and Al discuss needing help even while their wives are fantastic. first rule of learning how tom do stuff is cleaning up and putting it away and not controlling tools just borrow them after asking. I just can't tell how much of it is abt protecting the kids from too much video exposure/their privacy and how much is a natural desire to "just get things done" or letting them practice skills off-camera. So many different dynamics also depending on the number of acres.

It would have been nice to have a sibling that he could play, read, or share life with so I could get dinner and do other household chores before we settled down, so we could spend quality time with together. I worked 40+ hours, but it was hard spending time with him. One thing he enjoyed doing, was tossing a Frisbie back and forth. He said it would be good exercise for me...but that wasn't the case. I could catch it just fine but I couldn't toss it back and forth..... he is the one that was running all over the place...poor child. He sure slept well that evening. Al is not wrong Ben. At your boys age my brother and I were learning at my Grandfather’s workbench. He taught us basic framing, placing concrete and building fences. As well as rebuilding the truck, including the engine. These were skills that we learned as well as helping him build a barn as well as a boat storage yard. Skills that we used all of our lives for many things. How to be basically handy. These were so valuable lessons that I can never thank him enough. In my 50’s we refurbished our home and built a barndominium. I saved tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process. So yeah, take Al’s advice to heart and start teaching your boys by putting them to work building your homestead.

I can tell he feels if he gives the boys responsibilities like you & I grew up with its being too hard on them but freedoms are usually based on how self motivated & responsible one is. So many young families miss the mark.

Ben, thanks for sharing your struggles. I'm praying God gives you fresh direction, passion and joy in what you do. Please realize what an impact you have on so many people watching your channel. I love everything about your family. Of course we know you aren't perfect, but you are fulfilling that hope in us, that we pray many parents will give the next generation. Your kids will grow up in the same generation as my grandkids. I am so thankful for you and Meg homeschooling, homesteading and raising your kids to go barefoot in the dirt and grass. It is the way I raised my daughters. It doesn't seem like much, but as they become adults, you begin to see that they excel much further than other kids in the system, and become healthy, happy adults. When you show your family praying together before each meal, it is so refreshing. It's the simple things that add up, and what you and Meg are doing is HUGE!
My husband and I have been watching all three of you guys for a few years. You help us get motivated to do stuff around our place. I understand that feeling of always doing projects, but somehow it isn't as rewarding as when I am helping someone else. However, the best advice is simply to spend some quiet time with God in the morning. Not just praying, but asking and listening. Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Joh 16:13 "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."
I also learned that I have authority in the spirit, as God's child, to command depression to GO, and it does. Don't let what you hear is going on in the world get you down. It can be scary and depressing, but we must pray against it, and trust God to care for us and our families. No matter what comes our way, he will give us the grace to face it. Trust Him. Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

Your own individual way of homesteading because of location or what not but also, how some of the homesteading things can be attained no matter where you live. Just a thought🙂 You all are doing a great job at this.🙂

I enjoy this round table very much. I've been a follower of Al for many years when Olivia was just about 5 years old. I think what would be entertaining to me works be for you guys to talk about what cameras you use and how you set up your shots. How many angles. Also, what got you started on doing RUclips. I remember when Al was working and when Gina was able to stop working outside the home. I've subscribed to Ben and Jason's Channel also.

Burnout is the hardest thing to come across when you are living the life you want/love. We are in our busy time here in our family owned, organic run plant Nursery in New Zealand , we just had our riparian plants for farms season in May/June which is tens of thousands of plants out the door, now we have bare rooted fruit trees starting, had about a thousand trees come in and we had a half day to get them all heeled in to survive. We have a team of 3 full time workers and 3 part time - four days later half of them are all bundled off for pre orders and we have the remainders ready for public sales. Not only are we all tired but my brain function is low. Still, even in the frosts and rain that we are constantly in living under the shadow of the local mountain (Mount Taranaki, its a volcano), I would not have it any other way. We still have 3 more drops of bare rooted fruit trees to come, Im trying to avoid thinking about it. My emails are this mornings focus so that I get more satisfied customers. I need a dark space to plank in for an hour so my brain can shut down, sleeping aint happening. Peace to you Ben, we all get ya even in diverse situation.

Definitely feel you guys on the project paralysis kind of thing - there are days where it feels like nothing is moving at all, and why bother trying. But then I try to get one small thing accomplished, and get things rolling. Like Jason, organizing something or even doing the dishes helps change the mindset. Keep your hands busy while your mind shifts and sorts things out and get back at it!
Change is a good thing. I totally understand why you got rid of the cow, Ben, and applaud you and Meg for recognizing the need and making the change. We aren't a big enough channel here to have to deal with that delay to avoid comments yet, but I'm sure it will come, so thanks for talking about it here.
