      Thanks so much Chris! So proud of this one, I've physically struggled through so many Ultras in my life and this was the first time I really felt in control even when moments got tough ❤️ Oh, a pleasure! I'm gutted too but you'll come back stronger and even more hungry for the next one 🔥 So I'm looking forward to seeing you crush it!

    I'm a local fell runner so always fun watching others enjoying the hills, one thing I always tell people about preparing for long runs in the mountains like this, recce's are great but also look at the local fell races, a lot of which are only around 8-10 miles but you learn so much and gain so much experience doing those shorter races too as they're a different animal and on the straight up/down races you get to see the elite fell runners pass you doing 5 min/mile descents which is insane! At the end of the day these are just long fell races so you see a lot of the best mountain ultra runners regularly doing the shorter fell races too.

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  4 месяца назад +1

      Thankyou for the Adive Mark! I’ve wanted to learn more and get more involved with fellow running so maybe you can guide me with it haha. Genuinely, what’s the best fell race in the UK for meeting people and having a large sense of community? I’m booked into the Arc Of Attrition and Snowdonia 100 miles next year so could do with sharpening my skills. Although.. I hear Tom Evan’s is on the scene now, so all deluded dreams of a podium finish are out the window 🙈

      @@ActiveIdeas There's also a famous Fell Running book called 'Feet in the Clouds' which was written by a bloke living in London who took up fell running in the Lake District which is the spiritual home of fell running, and to this day has the biggest races and most vibrant fell running scene, the book is a great insight into taking up fell running when you don't live near the mountains.

    Well done Kingsley and all, great achievement! For me personally when it comes to mountains like Snowdonia, I much prefer hiking walking taking my time to soak in the scenery and appreciate the beauty and majesty of where I am. But then, we are all different, yes? 🙏🏼

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Donato! Thanks so much for dropping by, love your channel! ❤️ There are definitely strengths and weaknesses to both approaches, when I've walked in snowdonia just getting to a summit and back to the car has been a whole day event for me. The cool thing about running it this time around was I got to see sooo much of northern Wales, it's really helped me connect the geo-locations in my mind now too.. I feel like I have a much better understanding of where everything is 🔥 Running through the night in a location like this is surreal too, really feels magical 🙈 That being said, I can't wait to hike again, and not batter myself 🤣 All the best mate 🙏🏼

  • @Nick-B78

    Fair play. I have to say that I think doing these races in a group can actually sometimes put more pressure on things like cutoff times and simple organisational stuff like cars than the positives it provides with motivation and bonding etc.

    • @ActiveIdeas

      Cheers Nick!! Yeah, it’s a tough one. If you check the other vlog on this channel: Rat Race The Wall 100km.. it’s the same group of us lads and we pretty much ran it all together.. I can’t put into words how amazing that felt. But yeah.. for a race as brutal as UTS.. maybe it was too much pressure 🌟

This was to ensure i never overcooked myself and was able to keep a consistent training block. What i did do was replace running volume with more strength training to get the legs strong. Now you’ve done the 100k keep the consistency going.

      Haha, I think that feeling of “holy crap” hits you quite bad on the first climb.. and with the 100km it just never quite goes away hahaha. The good news for me in this race though, was that feeling never got any more worse so i was able to manage it ❤️ (just about) But yeah, I have similar perplexities looking at the 100 mile runners to be honest. 👍🏽

    Well done Kingsley- you must have passed me on snowdon somewhere I lost 3 hours in a blackhole! How does it compare to Arc? Any tips appreciated!

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  8 месяцев назад +1

      Oh man! That second snowdon climb was dreadful wasn’t it. I teamed up with a lovely runner called Lyuba from the video, she was moving super quick on the snowdon and I was at max HR trying to hang on haha.. I just knew if I let go of her pace I’d slip into that black hole too 🤣 In many ways, I would say the 100k’s through snowdon was worse than the arc (the climbs) but the Arc was rentless.. you never felt like you weren’t climbing because it was undulating up and down so much. By mile 17 in the Arc my legs were cramping up with fatigue. The cut offs feel a little bit more tight than UTMB & the sheer length.. 104 miles through Arc terrain breaks you down. The fun part about the Arc is that there are lots of relatively flat sections on super easy terrain where you can “send it” to make up the time 🤣 All on all.. expect to suffer all the same .. just for longer 🙈

      Oh thanks so much for checking back in mate! Really appreciate all the kind words ❤️The whole Coros vs Suunto test was interesting.. battery life was dramatically better on Suunto with same settings. Accuracy of the compass on Suunto really helped when I was pooping myself on snowdonia’s ridge at nighttime. Coros was cool though cause it autocorrect added all my aid stations and checkpoints from the downloaded GPX (on Suunto you have to this & turn by turn navigation manually, you can’t import) that was a massive psychological advantage knowing information such as “oh cool.. only 1.3 miles to the next aid station”. The more I test watches the more I think.. have two is sooo much better than one when out in the mountains 🤣

    • @010MACS
      @010MACS 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@ActiveIdeas haha double watch life win! Ah that is interesting. From what I hear battery and accuracy on the suunto is just top of the pile. But - how much of a chew on is adding turn by turn etc? Basically I am thinking to upgrade my watch for dragons back and I’ll have gpx files loaded, not sure I can be bothered to add turn by turn to almost 400k worth of route 🤣

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  6 месяцев назад +1

      Adding your own turn by turn is more chew that I can be bothered for personally haha. BUT at least you'll have the most accurate GPS system to keep you on track.. for the Spine Race the Garmin calculated all the turn by turns by its self from the gpx.. super handy. BUT when I needed navigation most the whole gps chipset stopped working properly on more than 5 occasions and for long durations too.
      There's definitely scope for all brands to improve their mapping and navigation features/stability but Suunto's accuracy can not be overlooked #BackToBascis 🙈

    How was the Salomon Genesis for this race? Seems like alot of rocks and the Genesis doesnt have a rockplate. And also how the overall feel was with these shoes. Got a pair myself But have only tested them out on a 60k pretty flat route 😃 GREAT WORK AND GRATZ TO THE FINISH! Great vid as well!

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  8 месяцев назад +1

      They’re honestly one of my favourite shoes ever made. More grip than Nike, more comfort than Inov8, no laces to worry about, stable from heel to toe and look pretty cool too. I would say they performed fantastically.. I finished with one heel blister and that was it. My feet were more a victim of my own neglect (I didn’t change socks, shoes or clean my feet at the 50km bag collection checkpoint) and the terrain was super boggy so I spent lots of the day wet. In terms of bogs, because these shoes have good breathability they dried literally within about 10 minutes of being soaking wet when the sun was out. During the night.. they remained damp for much longer. The only weakness was grip where I wasn’t 100% secure on slippery rock or wet mud. Straight out of the box the grip was satisfactory for the most demanding of terrains (worst imaginable) but I’ve put closer to 1000 miles in them now and you can tell that original grippy performance is no longer there. With regards to a rock plate... I had zero issues with that, and I was traversing on some super sharp rocks. Because of the cushioning nothing gets through 👌🏽
      THANKS MAN, I HAD SO MUCH FUN ON THIS ONE ❤️

    Just watched the video and man what a course… looks so tough but so beautiful 🤩 that race just made my to do list. Well done mate… you are brutal and steadfast💪🏼 how did you find the Vertix 2S vs the Veriltcal? If have had my Vertix now for almost 2 weeks and I absolutely love it🔥

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  8 месяцев назад

      Couldn’t recommend UTS100 more! It was even more beautiful than what I could capture on camera at times 😍 I would say… make sure you do lots of Vert training if you do sign up 🤣 Both watches were great on this run.. they both started on 100% Coros dropped to 38% & Suunto to 52%. The compass is still king on Suunto, this was super useful for steep scrambles on the snowdonia ridges where all I could see at my eye level was more rock to climb and sense of direction was lost. The vertical is also more lightweight. Coros was Excellent in another way.. the GPX file, just like Garmin when I imported it into the Coros app it kept lots of the turn by turn directions without having to do it myself 🔥 the navigation data page on the Coros also showed me the distance to the next checkpoints, this was a MASSIVE racing advantage “woo only 2 miles to the next aid station”. Coros kept my head strong during the race 🔥 .. do you accidentally activate the scroll wheel all the time on your Vertix? 🌟

    • @kristinjensen5367
      @kristinjensen5367 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@ActiveIdeas yes it really looked like there were some big scrambling sections on the course, it with that view up ahead, wow it looked good🔥 yes I did a lot when I had the Apex 2 Pro and the Vertix 2, but with the 2S not so much, but I wish it still was better made like the scroll wheel on the Race. But I found out that if you change the default setting to “scroll to unlock”, then it won’t scroll and change data pages all the time, you have to instead to scroll to unlock the screen to then scroll to other data pages😊 I just bought the Coros HRM and POD 2, I have become quite fond of training by Effort Pace and heart rate… it just gives much more sense than regular Pace when out running trails and doing hills😎

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  8 месяцев назад

      That’s a great point actually! I wish the crown was more like the Suunto Race, it’s very difficult to accidentally active that.. also on the race I like how you can just push the scroll button in to unlock it.. the last thing I wanna be doing to change a data page is holding down the scroll wheel whilst running or scrolling the crown 6 times just so I can switch from maps to HR/Pace/Distance.
      Oh wicked! I actually have a Pod 2 and think it’s awesome, have been super slack with uploading that video and I’m also looking to get a Coros Hr strap! They look really comfortable 😍 That effort pace is sick.. also.. on Coros.. can’t you put the incline on for when you’re treadmill running to track vertical gain? If so this is a game changer for me

    • @kristinjensen5367
      @kristinjensen5367 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@ActiveIdeas yes exactly, I think the operation of the crown is much more thought through on the Race vs the Vertix, but maybe it just is the angle of the wrist, cause I have not heard any reviewers or users complain about other than myself😂
      Yes that’s true, I think the feature was introduced in Q1 update this year, that when going on a treadmill you can adjust the incline on the watch so it also measures vertical gain… I have not tested it yet, but think I will use it very much when hitting the treadmill when the cold is returning 🤩 such a great feature 👏👏

    • @ActiveIdeas
      @ActiveIdeas  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah! Tbf I don’t think any reviewers are actually using the Vertix 2S as their daily watch. More of a quick review and then on to the next one 🤣 either that or they’re just lucky with their wrist shape
