I’ve read all of Stephen‘s books. And I’ve even taken his training course. I have enormous respect for Steven and I truly believe that he has genuine experience with the flow state on a personal level. However, I truly believe that the way that Stephen talks about flow and, the process of experiencing it is pointed to something that is not actually flow. It’s a valuable psychological state, of course, but it’s not flow.
Here’s an example: one of Stephen’s favorite phrases is “to get your biology to work for you instead of against you.” When you look closely at the Praxis of this inside of Flow research collective, this turns out to be a formula for stimulating the production of a cascade of neurochemicals because they are found when researching people who are experiencing flow. But the first rule of science is that correlation does not equal causation. The cascade of neurotransmitters and the flow state itself are epiphenomena of one another rather than The former being the cause of the latter. In yoga science, there’s a term for this as well called “mutually arising.“
