For complex shapes you can place acrylic sheet in boiling water to soften the whole thing evenly and not have to hold it while heating, then drop the softened sheet over a mold that has the shape you want.
Chris Locke heat guns kick out a substantial amount of directed heat, and they generally always have a High and Low setting. Do you have a recommended safe distance to avoid scorching?
@@GrizzG13 with patience, its more about the movement of the piece than amount of heat... you can't just hold a piece over the heat, yes, that'll scorch it in seconds. I evenly wave the line on the piece that I want to bend, over the stationary heat gun, flipping the piece over every 3 or 4 passes, and soon the piece will start to bend on its own in general along the intended bend line, and I know its soft enough to remove from heat and bend with tools (I use flange pliers, or for large pieces just two blocks of wood to bend pieces)
@@ChrisLocke1969 excellent. That's actually very helpful info. I'm starting a project that's going to require a lot of bent acrylic. My only real experience with heat guns and clear plastics before this has been from trying to recondition beat up head lights. I do believe you're right though. Patience is gonna be the most important factor
@@GrizzG13 if you're looking for perfectly square/tight angles, make yourself jigs as necessary. One other important tip... as soon as i have the shape i want, i spray the piece with water, and it locks in place instantly. Good luck with your projects! 👍
@@ChrisLocke1969 good to know! I was wondering if water would cause a stress differential and make the bend brittle or weak. I'll be sure to do that. Thanks for your help! 😁
Awesome!!! You just saved me a lot of money haha I need a bended acrylic piece and after watching your video I know I can easily do this myself. Thank you!!
I use a hot air rework station for my heat source, kind of like a heat gun but it can get much hotter. But there is a bunch of great info here, and I like how you use pieces of wood to act like a jig to make bends easier.
man i remember making my first tough project in school :D it was a S shaped vial? thingy holder and it was the toughest thing ever in metal class. now years later i wanna attempt it again. amazing video really handy and will try soon to see if im still good at it :)
Thanks for a great video. What is the minimum bend radius achievable with 90° bends? Is 3-4mm achievable with 3mm thick acrylic? I want to make a tin foil roll holder to mount on the inside of a kitchen cupbard door. Space is a bit tight so debating whether to cut 4 pieces and glue them together or form the rectangle by starting with a long strip and putting 4 bends in it
Great video, but PLEASE never wrap hot plastic around a spray paint can! Even if you think it's empty, it can be under pressure inside, or you could have gotten two cans mixed up, and those cans can explode if heated. Safety first.
I have a piece of 5 or 6mm acrylic, that was inadvertently heated and one end warped towards the heat source. If I heat the other side, will it warp the other way? What I want to avoid most is making it worse. Should I heat that end and then sandwich it between 2 flat surfaces? TIA
Great tutorial! Question, I want to bend thin acrylic (like 3-4mm) , should I warm that up just a bit, or just as long as the thicker one? Also, what is the heat 'curing' time, I mean how long can you wait with the bending, after heating?
Nice one. Suggest if you first have base then fold it 90°perpendicular, then down at 45°then 2" above the bottom at the edge a final -1" 45,° facing up will give it hangibg. You can give a cut at the desired point for charger wire incert. My one question is hot water can't help instead of burner heating?
in the process of making a chip guard for my lathe. I have to bend 1 foot by 2 foot piece with a large radius without refracting the view. I have made 3 so far and none have been good. Thank you for making this. I think it will help.
I was browsing acrylic tubing and bends for inspiration on updating my pc water cooling build. Realized that she would be pro at doing custom loops lol.
Love the acrylic bending technique. I was making a clear miniature podium for a puppet music video and was going to cut all the pieces then glue them with the medium Hot Stuff glue. but after watching your video I think I will bend the sides and the front to hold the top angled piece after I glue it. Sounds good and might make a better miniature podium. Will show you the results in the future. Thanks for sharing...
You can also use a heat gun. I believe it gives you better control. Also, at least some heat guns have temperature control. Most blow cooler air than what results from the burning of gas.

Wow, shall try it defo
What is the maximum thickness that you can do this with? 1/4"?
Any video reference for this?
This is a great idea. I'm definitely using it.
russian lady, you are brilliant
Try a hot air gun... no burns, no blackening, very little boiling. Also, always heat both sides.

they should play your voice at restaurants because it tastes so good
awesome. will this work with acrylic mirrors?
Awesome I was looking for a specific tier display but wasnt finding any luck. I might have to take this route and bend it to different heights
That was awesome. Thank you for the demonstration. Have you ever tried to bend an enclosed circle with bends on both sides, ie. walls?
Fantastic video! I'm thinking of using an acrylic piece to create an air conditioner deflector, and this will help a lot!
really very useful
Teşekkürler bilgiler için. Ellerine sağlık.👏👏👏👍
My new favorite channel.
Awesome. What type of heater would you recommend to put a 90 degree bend in a piece that is large, like 48 inches long and 30 inches wide?
thanks a lot, idk if acrylic like this would work on custom tuned body kits for bikes and cars, but im looking forward to it
*clears throat* I am here to learn for this exact reason my friend 😉
Good one, btw can you please make a tutorial on how to make water ripple pattern effect on a acrylic sheet?
Any advice to bending acrylic to a bowl shape?
what about 10mm arcylic?? have you tried it ? any special setting?

Very nicely done!
Would you recommend using clamps to solidly wedge the pieces?

Superb video, extraordinary explainnation. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
would this work with a regular candle/lighter??
Awesome video!
👍 Excellent. So many vids show everything going right, but true learning also involves all the things that can go wrong. Well done.
Fantastic! This has given me the solution to a project I've been working on for some time!
will the heat gun work to bend acrylic?
great ideas, thanks!
From where do you buy the sheet
Very interesting. Thanks.
Your videos are awesome--thanks for posting!

Hmmmm! This is giving me ideas for my rats cage and making them trays. Thank you so much for your video and inspiration!
Trays or even custom tubes, as you can bend two halfs and glue them together (ofc with animal-friendly glue)
can it be done with actual glass? like 5mm
This is awesome. How can i shape it into a cone shape?
Can this be done with acrylic pipes?
How can I get this materia and how much is it
Nice, keep safe and may God bless you always, i do DIY and recycling, friend from Philippines

Is it possible that I can bath the acrylic sheet in warm water to get it soft able to bend it?

WOW, amazing video. I must try this at home it looks so cool. The way it gets hard to soft when heated. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
+Creativity Hero How long do I have to wait for the acrylic to cool down?
Thank you a lot but wouldn`t it be easier to heat it evenly in the oven?
I was searching for this so long 👋🏻🙉 thank you 😊
u're using the plastic coated gloves while playing with fire,, great, what a nice brilliant job..
