This performance right here is the reason why the Rolling Stones are the greatest rock and roll band in history. They could have kept this groove going for 10 more minutes easily.

The lyrics of “Brown Sugar” (1971) are about slaves from Africa who were sold in New Orleans and abused by their white masters. The topic is quite serious, but the song is structured as a fun rocker about a white guy having sex with a coloured girl. According to “Up and Down With The Rolling Stones” (1996) by Tony Sanchez, all the slavery and whipping is a double entendre for the perils of being mastered by “brown heroin” (or “brown sugar”). The drug cooks brown in a 🥄 spoon. This was the first tune released on Rolling Stones Records, using the now iconic tongue and lips for their logo. The album cover was designed by the one and only Andy Warhol❕It was a close-up photo of a man wearing tight jean, and contained a real zipper. That caused considerable problems in shipping, but was the kind of added value that made the product much more desirable. Artists who covered “Brown Sugar” include the likes of Little Richards, Collin Raye and Alice Russell. Also, Bob Dylan performed it on his 2002 US tour. “Brown Sugar” was a staple of Rolling Stones set lists until 2022. Why❔ Mick Jagger replied : “We’ve played ‘Brown Sugar’ every night since 1970, so sometimes you think, ‘We’ll take that one out for now and see how it goes.’ We might put it back in.” 💚👅💙
